Summer 2007 Addition Southern States Mastiff Fanciers Hey Everyone, I am so excited about this issue. In this issue there are lots of announce- ments, results from our parent clubs national specialty, the kick off of our calendar contest, and much more. This issue is filled with wonderful photos submitted by our members for last years calendar contest (2007) . Unfortunately there is no way to include them all, so they were selected for how they fit into the newsletter format (space). Before it disappears check out the gallery of all last years entries - it is really an amazing compellation of mastiffs. I am really thrilled to announce a new newsletter editor! One of our newer members Jennifer McKemie has graciously stepped up to take over the newsletter. It has been a great pleasure to serve as you newsletter editor. Thank you all for your support and I know you will support Jennifer too! Jennifer, I am so grateful for your willingness to take on this task. I want to encourage you all to be involved in the club. There are really wonderful folks in this club that would love to get to know you. Post on the SSMF message board, volunteer for tasks, attend the fun matches and club meet- ings if you can, and consider contributing news or articles to the newsletter! Thanks everyone! Support SSMF and be a proud point of contact for your region, on our Online Member Breeder Listing Gallery!
All SSMF Members Are Invited To Participate!
Even if you are not a breeder, if you are an SSMF member knowledgeable and supportive of our code of ethics you are still an excellent breed-educated point of contact about Mastiffs for the general public within your region. We want SSMF members to
be that point of contact that people make when doing web searches for ‘Mastiffs’ or Mastiff puppies’ in their area.
Just Maybe the information we provide to them can help them to make an informed decision about adding a Mastiff to their
family- and to prevent some Mastiffs from ending up in rescue in the future, as a result.
Listings beautifully display your name, state and contact information and a photo of your choice will be artistically presented.
If you have a website that can be linked to your ad as well but is not necessary.
And yes an entire year’s listing fee is still only $22.00 a year!
Submit your member breeder listing with photo today at the website address above today.

Duke A rescue Story
On a very hot August day last summer I was in the yard washing my car when I saw two dogs coming down the street. First I thought they were the neighbors dogs roaming the neighborhood. One of them was really big and looked kinda scary. Alongside the big dog was a small black dog (we later named her Perky). I then thought well, maybe they are
lost and thirsty. They had collars but no ID.
The big guy came to me, sighed and moaned and put his head into my lap and I thought "I gotta help this dog". I got water, food and snacks and lured them into my fenced back-
yard. I thought about turning them into a shelter but I feared they would be euthanized.
Duke went to the vet to see what was wrong with his eye. we were told Duke had been neglected and abused and he may lose his left eye. During several weeks we provided Duke and Perky a temporary home. We knew we were faced with extensive vet care for Duke, so we contacted Alma Bowman of Southern States mastiff Rescue and released Duke to them to find him a good home and see to it that he got the medical attention
he needed.
We had already spent about $500.00 and didn't think I could afford the eye surgery if it was needed. We continued to house Duke and Perky while SSMR tried to find him a home. OR, you guessed it. We decided we could not part with either of them so we de-
cided to adopt Duke from SSMR.
Duke's injured eye healed and he has regained some of the sight in that eye. Coat is now in great condition and on his last visit to the vet he weighed 198 pounds! He has come a long
way from that starved 120 pound dog that was lost and hungry.
I will be forever grateful that I was in the backyard the day these dogs came down the road. They are the greatest and we cannot imagine not waking up with them every morning. Duke's not perfect. He snores, farts and eats like a horse. But he loves to carry 20 pound logs around the yard, is a super watchdog and loves it when you lie on the floor with him and give him
hugs and love.
Thank you Alma and SSMR for your help with Duke and all the other Mastiffs you have saved. Please make donations to the group as it is strictly non-profit and relies completely on your
donations and adoption fees. All donations are tax deductible too!

How many opportunities do we get to shop for cool stuff while helping to rescue abandoned
and abused Mastiffs at the same time? The SSMR annual online auction provides just that.
• All SSMF members are invited to pitch in and help make this year’s auction event a big success- so that SSMR can continue its work of saving Mastiffs day in and day out. It’s all
about the Mastiffs.
• Please get together with your friends and come up with something special to donate to
the auction that you know would be a popular item for bidding!
• NEW: This year donated items can also be offered for the auction in memory of a be-loved friend or of a friend’s lost loved one –and the memorial donation will be attributed
in the online auction listing.
• To submit donations or to ask for guidance about donations, please email Dolly Moore (SSMR/SSMF Webmaster & Online Auction Coordinator) at [email protected]
and she will contact you ASAP!
Thank you for your gracious support of SSMR’s online auction 2007.
Because the need for rescue has grown so much , may we earn more for Mastiff rescue in 2008
