Engaging Through real worldgeographical issues
Geography has never been more exciting! This previous term students have beengiven the opportunity to participate inseveral research projects.
The Geography faculty have teamed up with the Science and PDHPE faculties and Dorroughby Environmental Centre to conduct several canoeing excursions on Jerusalem Creek at Black Rock National Park. During this field trip students are surveying marine debri and conducting water quality tests. Results will remain with Dorroughby Environmental Centre and placed into a national data base for marine debri. Geographical fieldwork and research inquiry is a compulsory part of the Geography curriculum. Participating in field trips and mini schools is a fun and informative way to achieve these geographical learning outcomes. Students, keep your eyes peeled as later this year there will be another chance to participate in this mini school.
The next Epic Mini School will be available again on 29th November and this time we will be filming our trip with drones so that the video can be shared with Indigenous students in Alaska.

Geography enrichment dayThis term the Geography faculty offered students the opportunity to participate in a Landcare project in collaboration with Ballina Wetland Care. Learning about the threats to local populations of Koala, students will work alongside the experts. Wetland Care Ballina is attempting a crowd funding project that will result in a vegetation corridor on private property that will provide much needed habitat and protection for this endangered species.
If you missed out on the Geography Enrichment Day, keep an eye out as round two will occur in term 4.

STUD IES OFREL IG ION
Southern Cross Distance Education offers a uniquesubject to Full- Time and Single Subject senior students –and that subject is the fascinating world of Studies ofReligion. Students from many corners of the northernhalf of the State undertake Studies of Religion – from theHunter and Mid-North Coast, through the ClarenceValley and the Tablelands, to the Northern Rivers and upto the Tweed Coast.Studies of Religion is a Board of Studies -endorsed courseoffered at 1 Unit and 2 Unit levels to Yr 11 and Yr 12students. It is a comparative study of the world’s greatreligions, such as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islamand the religions of the ancients like the Aztecs and theCelts. Students get a fascinating window -seat view of thehistory, beliefs, sacred texts and spiritual practices ofthese great world religions, which have so significantlyinfluenced the course of our world. Each year more and more senior students chooseStudies of Religion at Distance Ed., as students discoverhow interesting and relevant the subject is and thepopularity of the subject escalates. As one Yr 12 student recently explained her choice forthis subject , ‘It’s like Modern History, Ancient Historyand Society and Culture all rolled into one, but heapseasier to study and more relevant to understanding today’s multi-cultural society. When I go to a Thairestaurant now, I know what the Buddhist shrine meansin the corner. I know something of the history of Israelwhen I see it on the news and why Jewish people claim itas their homeland.’ Our teachers Tiffeny Cox and Paula Taylor have beenteaching the subject for more than a decade now. Theyhave gone from strength to strength in delivering acourse which is both engaging and accessible to studentsat all levels of academic ability. They actively pursue first-hand experiences of the religions they teach, fromattending the Dalai Lama’s Brisbane Buddhistconferences to weekends at Christian Missionary camps. Students are supported by phone, email, SMS and visits.See our photo of Ms Taylor with a Studies of Religion Yr11 student and her Supervisor/ School Chaplain atMelville High School, Kempsey, on the NSW Mid NorthCoast.

E- LEARNING IN HSIE
CANVAS
HSIE staff have been very busy learning about CANVAS so thatcourse materials can be sent to you online. We are excited by all
the learning possibilities this will bring to students.
Belle broke open her piggy bank. There were 20 coins in the bank. She noticed 7 of the coins faced tails up. She then mixed them (no flipping) and without looking separated the coins into two groups, one of 7 and one of 13.
She then flipped the group of 7 to their other side.
She noticed both groups then had the same number of tails facing upwards. She said, “No way!”
She borrowed another 10 coins from mum and mixed them.
This time there were 12 tails. She mixed them again and separated them into a group of 12 and 18 (no looking). She then flipped the group of 12 and again noticed both groups had the same number of tails. She said “No way squared!”
Suggestion—Try it with any number of coins, (make sure the group size is the same as the number of tails).
