Hey Folks, I hope this finds you doing well. Weather is always on our minds because it affects so much of our lives in what we can get accomplished outside and enjoy the outdoors. We usually get excited about this time of the year because we know it won't be too much longer before we will be heading down to Daytona Beach for the 75th Anniversary of Bike Week! In this issue, you will find all the events in our centerfold so you know what's going on and where. Here's to great weather, great riding and great times!

We will also be hosting the 3rd Annual Ladies Bike Show at Boot Hill Saloon on Main Street Friday, March 11, 2016 at 9 AM. Come down to see beautiful bikes and their beautiful owners, vote for your favorite bike in People's Choice and see who takes home the grand prize custom-painted surfboard trophies! See the ad in this issue for more details.

In April, our journeys take us back to lovely Panama City Beach, Florida for the Thunder Beach Spring Rally. This is another favorite rally and is completely different in its own unique way. There are so many different venues to check out and great music from awesome bands every night. We love to ride along the beaches and see the sights. We will once again, be hosting the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show, so make plans to participate or attend this great bike show. Last year, there were so many amazing looking bikes that I would have had a difficult time picking the winner. They were all winners as far as I was concerned! See you there!

I can honestly tell you that I know how it feels to lose a family member, a son, a father, a cousin. It hurts

sometimes more than people can stand, but life has to go on with the memories. When my cousin David Knox passed away suddenly from a motorcycle accident, it was tragic, emotional and sudden. When I went to the funeral home with family members, I met with David’s current wife, his good friends and sons Tanner & Trent whom all greeted me with tears and hugs as it had been 15 years since we had met the last time. I saw David’s casket draped with an American

Flag as David was a US Army veteran. Tears flowed but the proud feeling I had was making it bearable as I didn’t know he had served.

The funeral was set for the next day and as the evening wore on the guests became

be ExpressedBy Randy Gracy, David Knox’s Cousin

fewer, I found out that there would be no Patriot Guard there. The family didn’t know they would if asked. I made a few phone calls and texts and was eventually routed to George Burgan & Senior Chattanooga Ride Captain Robert McMullan. After a few phone calls and texts, they let me know that on such short notice (about 12 hours), they weren’t sure their national would clear it or they could get anyone to come. I told them I understood and thanked them anyway.

The procession began and I was behind the hearse and family as we began our route into the Chattanooga National Cemetery where our soldiers are laid to rest. As we turned the corner to park at the cemetery, I saw them; men and women standing with flags, honoring David, my cousin. They had arrived. Tears continued to flow down my face and another proud moment was felt. At the end of the day, I shook hands and thanked each and every one of them. His son’s, wife and friends were also thankful for them being there.

You never know what a group can do, what they really stand for or how it affects those they help until it’s you. When it’s personal, it counts more than can be expressed. Patriot Guard Riders in Chattanooga and around the country…I thank you with my humblest heart and a sincere statement of gratitude. Well done… all of you.

“The Patriot Guard Riders is a 100% Volunteer, Federally registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization which ensures dignity and respect at memorial services honoring Fallen Military Heroes, First Responders and honorably discharged Veterans.”

At deadline for this issue, I received a tremendous email with a press release and the excitement just went into overdrive! In our December 2015 issue I

hinted that it might happen and now I can report that it has. Draik Beauchamp has inked a deal with Quarterly Racing: On Track Development and begins his PRO Racing career. At just 16 years of age, someone and a few sponsors see a future in racing for this talented young gun. He along with new teammate 15 year-old Benjamin Smith will contest for a championship in the MotoAmerica KTM 390 Cup Series this year.

Quarterley Racing: On Track Development is the rebirth of AMA road racer Dale Quarterley’s adventures back into motorcycle racing. Dale Quarterley in conjunction with veteran club racer, Bob Robbins formalized a strategic alliance to support young, up and coming riders actualize their dreams on the track. The KTM 390 Cup will be highly competitive and serve as a great platform to have the opportunity to progress into the 600’s for both riders that have the ambition to compete at the top level of US Road Racing with MotoAmerica.

Draik and his team wanted to thank his 2016 Sponsors: Parents- Kurt & Alicia, Bob Robbins, 129 Photos, Sportbike Track Time, Apex Manufacturing, Brother Racing Innovations, Cycle Gear, NiTek Helmets, Safermoto, Red Fox Racing, Spider Graphix.

Riding dirt bikes is the best sport in the world. I think so because dirt bikes have

lots of speed and they are fun to ride.

The kind of dirt bike I have is a Honda 50cc. The color of my dirt bike is red and black and white. My dirt bike is a 4 stroke. The number on my dirt bike is 48. I picked that number because my favorite NASCAR driver is Jimmie Johnson.

I have to be safe to ride my bike. I wear a jersey, pants, goggles, a helmet, gloves, and boots. The kind of clothes I like to wear best are Fox.

When I first started riding the bike it was tricky to start the bike but when I practiced starting the bike it was easier. When you first start riding dirt bikes it’s going to be tricky

Why I Like Riding Dirt BikesBy Gavin Smith (Age 7)

but when you get the idea of riding it’s going to be more easier than when you first start riding. Riding dirt bikes is cool.

When I grow up I want to ride Supercross. Supercross is dangerous. You wear a helmet because if you fell you would not hurt your head. You wear boots because if your bike fell on your foot you would not get hurt. You wear goggles to keep your eyes safe from the dirt.

Some of my favorite riders are Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed, Eli Tomac, and Trey Canard. I like them because they are really great riders.

My goal is to try to compete in the 450 Main Event. I will have to practice every weekend and do my best at the track. I know I can do it!

Adding Inches To Your Riding

There used to

be a popular song that said, "short people have no reason to live." Well, some people think, "short people have no reason to ride," (especially short women).

I can't tell you how many times I've heard over the years, "that sure is a big bike for such a little girl/woman." It was as if I didn't quite have a right to ride a bike with the power that I enjoyed. Here are some ways I added inches to my riding:

#1. Keep yourself fit. It's important to work on your upper body strength. I like simple free weight work-outs. Also, hips, legs and ankles are important. I think squats are great as much as I have a love/hate relationship with them. And I always ride with boots that give great ankle support.

#2. Speaking of boots, I like a good solid boot with a sole and heel that give height, but avoid all fashion heel boots. You need a boot where the sole and heel are formed together and have non-skie material. You don't want to have a heel snap or separate from your boot when you are holding up the weight of your bike.

Kathy TollesonCEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

16 - Southern Biker Magazine March 2016

#3. Get your handlebars where your arms have a relaxed bend in them. You need arm for your corners and that bend gives you strength. No one throws a punch from an outstretched arm because it diminishes the power. The type of handlebar, risers or pull-backs and how they are positioned can all help. Sometimes a bar can be raised or lowered an inch or two and make a huge difference.

#4. A bike that has a low center of gravity is also very important and makes a huge difference in handling and control. It makes it so much easier to bring your bike up and helps with your stopping ability.

#5. Add a seat that is a custom fit. It should bump you up closer to the bars and is cut so it brings you down, but doesn't leave you sitting on the pan - because then riding is no fun! You can take a stock seat and have it shaped by someone who knows what they are doing or have one built pan up. I have found that it's pretty amazing what can be done with most stock seats and it can save a lot of money. But you have to get someone who knows what they are doing, so it's important not to just find someone who can re-upholster. It's okay to ask to test the seat before it gets covered, because sitting on it without riding won't give you a true picture.

#6. Think tall. When you are confident and have an attitude of strength, it makes a difference. If you're shaky and nervous, it's going to be harder to ride a bigger bike. Get your confidence up. Do whatever you have to do. Start where you're comfortabe and work your way up to a bigger bike, getting tutoring and ride, ride, ride.

So as a five foot tall woman, I sing a new song and you can, too! "I might have little eyes and little feet, but I can still ride and go beep, beep! You have to know that song to appreciate. ;-)

With the onset of getting older and the body slowly declining in

strength and quickness, many riders are opting for three wheels to their “Knees in the Breeze”. There are many such versions and manufacturers to develop a trike in many different forms. You have your usual trike with one wheel in front and two in the rear. There’s the trike conversion kits that add two wheels to the rear (making it actually four wheels) to make it more stable and then there’s the reverse trike with two wheels in the front and one wheel in the rear. Some look cooler than others and some have that brand name everyone wants. There are all types of suspension to help you with turns at faster speeds but you still get that “high siding” feeling as your body wants to come off the bike on the turn. In reality, none of the versions have you feeling like you are on two-wheels; that is…until now.

Honda’s new concept is the Neowing. Unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show and touted at the 2016 Auto Expo where it garnered all the attention, the Neowing is telling the world that Honda is leading the world in design, engineering and development of the future, today. It is designed with one wheel in the rear and two wheels in the front, but it does something that no other three wheeler does…it leans! Honda put its R&D in overdrive on this one! It’s an unprecedented three-wheeled motorcycle that offers the cornering feel and sporty ride equivalent to a large-sized motorcycle while realizing excellent stability in low-speed ranges.

2016 Honda NEOWING… Finally, a Real 3-wheel Motorcycle By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

Under the futuristic, sporty and well sculpted bodywork, the Neowing is powered by a hybrid power train that combines a horizontally opposed flat four-cylinder engine with electric motors. Though the power output is undisclosed, Honda promises the Neowing will come with impressive throttle response and torque. I believe this is more than just a concept as the Neowing has something on it that no other concept has had before…it manages to wear the ‘Wing’ badge, established by the iconic Gold Wing which Honda covets so much.

Big Red has hit a homerun into tomorrow with this one!

If Honda is showing this new concept to the public, you can bet that the showroom version of the Neowing is coming in the not too distant future. And when Honda puts this into production, the Can-Am Spyder and other trike manufacturers are going to feel the heat. I know I want one already.

Going to a motorcycle event in Atlanta, I was walking through the vendors and came upon a

unique looking new item I had never seen. A purse-like bag straps around your waist like a holster and another strap to wrap comfortably around your thigh. They are called U Koala Bags. I thought to myself, “Now there’s a good idea.” Then the lady working the booth pointed out the concealed carry ones and, BAM! I picked out one I liked and tried it on. I knew I just had to have one for not only motorcycle riding, but horseback riding too.

Little did I know, on Valentine’s Day, I received a nice present as my husband had ordered the one I wanted, the Beast. The feel of the Australian leather-like material was just as I remembered. I immediately transferred the items from my purse plus my handgun to the U Koala bag. All the assorted pouches and compartments made it easy to get to all the necessary items. The comfort came when I snapped it on my waist, adjusted it to fit and walked around with it. It felt like a light weight holster and my shoulders were applauding loudly. It leaves my hands free to do other

things that my old purse didn’t allow me to do because it was always falling off my shoulders, causing me to curse. If you prefer, you can carry it securely like a purse, cross body with a quick click of the belt snap. The next thing to do was to try it on while riding my horse and then my motorcycle.

The next couple of days, I accomplished just that. The bag performed flawlessly. It was so comfortable and unobtrusive that I almost forgot it was there except for the smile I had while wearing it. You see, no one knew that I was also packing my pistol and that was an added comfort. The concealed carry U Koala Bags come with magnetic clasps for quick access to your billfold, your weapon or whatever you may need from your bag. It also comes with zippered storage compartments that will hold everything most big bags will hold without that shoulder weight on you or that purse constantly falling off your shoulders when reaching for keys, carrying items or even reaching for the car door.

I can now go shopping, riding, etc without having a heavy, cumbersome purse to carry around and have to remind myself to pick it back up off the chairs I sit in. I’m not the only person who enjoys their new U Koala Bag. “I use this bag to carry my toddler’s

REVIEW

essentials on my hip. I have shoulders that dislocate, and bags with straps always fall down when I go to pick up the little one”, says Rachael Severs. “I bought mine yesterday after wishing I had bought it sooner! Everything inside is easily accessible plus I don’t have to shoulder a bag when it’s not convenient”, says Cindi Gilbert. “This is the most awesome bag I have ever owned and I get stopped constantly by people asking where did I get it! With purse snatchings being an issue, I never feel unsafe with this bag wrapped around my leg. My late husband was a Navy SEAL so always being aware of surroundings and making ourselves less of a target was a rule”, says Sarah Hawthorne.

To say that this is the bag you need and will want is an understatement. I just don’t know why someone didn’t think of this many years ago. Ladies, if you ride a motorcycle, this “IS” the purse/bag for you, even if you don’t conceal carry. It solves so many problems that a normal purse comes with, including causing shoulder strain and many others. They come in different sizes, designs and colors with different leathers and fabrics. To find out more about these great bags, you can go to www.ukoalabag.com.

ASK ANY BIKER!

Page 34: Southern Biker Magazine March 2016

Spring is Here (Almost). Remember the Ten Commandments to Avoid a DUI

Spring is upon us! As I’m writing this article sitting on my patio its 63 degrees and sunny and many of you are probably getting your bikes

ready for the first biker rally or spring ride down the Dragon.

This article’s intent is to help you to NOT need my services in the first place. The first recommendation for avoiding a DUI is not to put yourself in the situation in the first place (aka Don’t Drink and Drive”). Rest assured, not only can a DUI damage your reputation, your family life, lead to loss of employment, etc. it’s also very dangerous business. Practically speaking, a $10-$60 cab ride can save you thousands!

Mistake #1: Think that it won’t happen to me. There’s a first time for everyone. Just because you’ve got away with it for the last 10 years, doesn’t mean your luck will hold out another 10. In fact, it is often after folks “straighten up,” they get a DUI. This is to say, sometimes people will begin to act “more responsibly” by drinking only 3-4 rather than 6-8. However, if pulled over, an admission to an officer that you have had 3-4 is sufficient “probable cause” to lead to your arrest and the night in jail. And remember, 90% of people pulled over tell the officer that they had “a couple” or “two” to drink. Such a statement is a surefire way to land yourself in jail for the evening.

2. “Belief” that a couple glasses of water or cup of coffee will make you alert or sober. Water or a cup of coffee doesn’t make you sober, just more hydrated and drunk, or more awake and drunk. Time is the only way to truly sober up. Keep in mind that the old wive’s tale that people use about a drink an hour is wrong. Everyone is different, but a closer approximation is roughly ½ a drink an hour for women and about 2/3 of a drink an hour for men.

3. “Belief” that if you get too drunk, then you will have the awareness to ride home. Most of us are smart folks until we have a couple too many drinks. The best solution is to get a ride, take a taxi, get an Uber on your way to go out for the evening. If you purposefully give yourself no other option other than to take another taxi home, then you prevent yourself from later in the evening rationalizing “riding only a short distance home,” “not leaving your bike somewhere unsafe,” or the embarrassment of “trying to get a ride back to my bike tomorrow morning.” Avoid the temptation when you’ve had too much to drink. Give yourself only one option to get home by not taking your bike out in the first place if you plan to drink that day.

4. People often ask what should I tell an officer if he or she asks if I’ve had something to drink? Do I tell the truth? Although the author cannot recommend giving a false statement to an officer (possibly a crime), rest assured that ANY admission of drinking an alcoholic beverage will likely lead to the necessary “probable cause” that an officer needs for your arrest. You always have a right not to incriminate yourself and remain silent.

5. Always be nice to officers. Cooperative doesn’t mean you have to incriminate yourself, doesn’t mean you have to do a field sobriety test and doesn’t mean you have to give a blood or breath test, but simply being polite and being kind is more likely to lead to NOT being arrested, or at the very least, makes your case far more defendable down the road.

6. To blow or not to blow (to consent or not to consent to blood or breath testing): Refusing a test can lead to another charge and possible loss of license, although this is not an automatic action. Providing additional evidence will likely lead to a stronger case against you. When in doubt, it is your right to refuse a blood or breath test (or refuse a field sobriety test).

7. Won’t they just get a search warrant if I try to refuse a chemical (breath or blood) test? Answer: They may or may not; however, there are certain procedural steps that must take place correctly and lawfully in order to get a valid search warrant. Consenting to a blood or breath test gives up most of your rights when it comes to defending your case later.

8. Make sure your headlights, taillights, running lights, reverse lights, blinkers, even your license plate lights are all in working order. Don’t give law enforcement an additional reason to pull you over. Remember that registration sticker you got in the mail?----STOP READING NOW, and go stick it on your license plate, no seriously go stick it on now!! (but don’t forget to come back and finish the article). I can’t tell you how many clients have been pulled over for this very thing, and the sticker was in the glove box or on the kitchen table! There is no need to give law enforcement a perfectly valid reason to pull you over when you’ve potentially been drinking. While we are on the subject, don’t forget your insurance card. I’m not your daddy, but it is a good idea to have all of these essential items all together in one place for easy access. In fact, officers often state that the suspected person appeared drunk because they “fumbled with their wallet,” or “fumbled when trying to provide license, proof of insurance and registration.”

9. Motorcycles. Although it is technical legal to have a drink, and for some of us, two drinks and drive a car, I do not recommend driving a motorcycle under any circumstances after any drinking. The response time necessary to ride a motorcycle is drastically reduced from that of a four-wheeled vehicle. Save your chrome, don’t throw your leg over that bike if you’ve had ANYTHING to drink. Drinking and cruising is potentially a costly mistake, bringing harm to yourself, loved ones, and other drivers.

10. Plan, plan, plan. Arrange a ride at the beginning of the night, before your decision making is altered in anyway. Go ahead, call your favorite cab driver, download the Uber app—fill in the credit card info to make the ordering an Uber/Cab easier, less complicated and quicker later. Arrange for a sober ride in advance of your potentially impaired decision making… A cab or Uber is always cheaper than a DUI. Many folks have found that having Uber downloaded or their favorite’s cab app on their phone BEFORE they go out is helpful and convenient way to prevent a DUI. If one isn’t available, maybe the other will be.

To recap, safety is essential. Always do the safe thing. It’s cool to be safe, it’s cool to wear a safety vest if it means not getting a DUI or run over. No one is going to make fun of you or think less of you for doing the right thing. Encourage others to do the right thing and Don’t Drive Impaired. (By the way, driving impaired is illegal and less than drunk—You don’t have to be full drunk to be charged with DUI). The last thing any of us want to do is to spend our hard earned cash and tax refund checks on a DUI and a DUI attorney instead of the next rally or a new bike. I don't include this example to ruin anyone's day or to try to be overly dramatic, but accidents happen among young children and sometimes the availability of a weapon for a depressed teenager can create catastrophic and irreversible results! Be careful!
