Let’s Recap
The Redhawks played their conference bye week last weekend at home against Stephen F. Austin. The Redhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one but the Lumberjacks held Southeast scoreless as they rallied for three runs to take game one, 3-2. Joey Lucchesi did not factor into the decision on Friday night, despite striking out eight and allowing only two runs in seven innings. The senior and reigning OVC Pitcher of the Year has a nation’s-best 123 strikeouts in 87.2 innings this year; he also owns an 8-4 record and 2.05 ERA in 13 starts. The Redhawk bats exploded for 15 runs in game two as Southeast evened up the series with a 15-6 victory. The Redhawks secured the series win with a 9-5 victory on Sunday. Branden Boggetto extended his hitting streak to 13 games (the second longest active streak in the OVC) last week and hit .385 (5-for-13) in three games. Four of his five hits went for extra bases as he recorded three doubles and two home runs while driving in six RBI.
What’s Ahead
Southeast Missouri will makes its 22nd OVC Tournament appearance next week. The Redhawks, who will carry the No. 1 seed into the postseason tournament, will begin tournament play in game five Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. at the Ballpark at Jackson. The Redhawks will play the worst seed between the winners of games one and two.
Redhawks Clinch Outright OVC Title
The Southeast Missouri State baseball team clinched its third consecutive Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship. The 2016 championship is Southeast’s third in a row and fourth overall. Southeast has won the title in 2002, 2014, 2015, and now in 2016. It was announced Monday afternoon that Austin Peay’s baseball program would be vacating four OVC wins from 2016, putting the Govs at 17-9 in league play. Four wins behind Southeast and no more conference games remaining, the Govs will no longer be able to keep up with the Redhawks in the win column.
Redhawks Three-Peat
Since the OVC stopped division play in baseball in 1989, only Middle Tennessee has won three consecutive titles (1995-97); however, they were co-championships two of those three seasons (1996, 1997). No team has won three consecutive outright titles until the Redhawks have accomplished it this season.
Series History
Southeast Missouri holds a 14-7 lead over Belmont in the all-time series, dating back to 1999. Since Belmont baseball began competing in the OVC in 2013, Southeast is 9-4 against the Bruins. Since joining the OVC, Belmont has never played at Capaha Field; Southeast has traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to face Belmont each of the last three seasons. The Redhawks faced Belmont five times in the month of May last season. The Redhawks won the regular-season series then drew Belmont in the second round of the OVC Tournament. Southeast fell in their first game of the tournament to the Bruins, 7-2, to fall into the loser’s bracket. Southeast faced Belmont again and won 9-4 to eliminate them and advance to the championship round.
Left-Handed Pitcher Joey LuKKhesi
Southeast’s ace Joey Lucchesi currently leads the nation in strikeouts with 123. For the second year in a row, Lucchesi has cracked Southeast’s single-season strikeouts top-10 list and his 123 strikeouts ranks second. He needs eight more to break Ryan Spille’s record of 130 (1998). His 93 from last season ranks fifth on the list. He has also cracked Southeast’s career strikeouts list with 216, a figure that ranks second on the list. He is only the second to crack the list in two seasons. Spille’s (1998-99) 215 strikeouts ranks third. The all-time career strikeouts record of 239 belongs to Trae Hastings (1975-78). The OVC record for single-season strikeouts is 133.
The Road to Jackson
Southeast Missouri baseball will make its 22nd consecutive OVC Tournament appearance next weekend in Jackson, Tennessee. Southeast’s 22 consecutive appearances is a league record. 2016 will be the seventh year for the OVC Tournament in Jackson.
But Does He Get On Base?
The Redhawks rank fourth nationally in on-base percentage with a .414 clip. Individually, Garrett Gandolfo ranks 50th with a .473 percentage. Chris Osborne ranks 52nd in the country with a .473 percentage.
Seeking 37
Southeast Missouri is three wins away from tying the program record of 37 single-season wins. Southeast set the mark in 2000, tied it in 2002, then tied it again 12 years later in 2014. 2016 is the third season in a row the Redhawks have recorded 30 wins or more. It’s the 12th time in Southeast’s Division I history the team has touched 30 victories.
OVC Wins Record
The record for OVC wins in a season is 24, set by Tennessee Tech in 2013. Southeast nearly tied the record in 2014 with 23 wins. The Redhawks can tie the record this weekend with a sweep of Belmont.
Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!
The Redhawks have been nearly unbeatable on Sunday, or in game three of a series. Southeast fell to Lamar on opening weekend but since has gone unbeaten on Sunday. Southeast has won 12 of 13 series finales, all with Robert Beltran on the mound. Beltran suffered the loss in the Sunday Lamar game but since then has gone 8-0.
The Latest RPI Ranking
In the latest NCAA RPI rankings, Southeast Missouri ranks 56th out of 300 Division I teams. Three OVC programs appear in the top 100. Behind Southeast is Austin Peay (91) and Jacksonville State (92). Morehead State ranks 108th and the rest of the over rank 186 and lower. D1Baseball.com also ranks the Redhawks 59th.
Patience at the Plate
Southeast Missouri ranks third nationally in walks with 288 this season. Mercer leads the country with 321 while Belmont has 305. Southeast is led in walks by Trevor Ezell, who ranks 17th in the nation in the category with 45. Dan Holst (44) and Garrett Gandolfo (41) rank 20th and 28th in the country, respectively.
Going Streaking
Branden Boggetto kept his hitting streak alive this weekend, extending it to 13 games; however, Trevor Ezell’s hitting streak was snapped at 18. Garrett Gandolfo’s 30-game on-base streak is still alive while Chris Osborne is on a 22-game streak. Ezell’s on-base streak is now at 20 games while Boggetto’s 13-game hitting streak coincides with a 19-game on base streak.

The 2016 National Pitcher of the Year Award is presented by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. The award, sponsored by Diamond, will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas as part of the annual Night of Champions event. A record 101 collegiate catchers comprise this year’s list. Catchers are nominated by their school for consideration of the award. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 18, 2016.
Siddle Breaks Appearance Record
Senior right-handed pitcher Alex Siddle broke Southeast Missouri’s all-time appearance record on Friday with his 77th career appearance. He broke the record held by Jason Swearingen (1995-98).
Osborne Hits for the Cycle
Junior outfielder Chris Osborne became the first Southeast Missouri baseball player to hit for the cycle since 2003 on Sunday at Austin Peay. Osborne singled in the second inning, homered in the fifth, tripled in the eighth, and doubled in the ninth to complete the cycle. Denver Stuckey was the last Southeast player to hit for the cycle on May 4, 2003 at UT Martin.
Three Consecutive OVC Pitchers of the Week
The Redhawks have had an OVC Pitcher of the Week each of the first three weeks of the season. Clay Chandler has earned the honor twice (Feb. 22, Mar. 7) and Joey Lucchesi earned it once (Feb. 29). No team in the OVC has ever earned three-straight pitchers of the week to begin a season until now. On Feb. 29, Lucchesi earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors followed by Chandler earning the honor on Mar. 7.
Tabbed to Three-Peat
Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches and sports information directors have tabbed the Redhawks to win the OVC in 2016. The Redhawks received 19 first-place votes of the 22 ballots cast. The Redhawks will look to win their third-straight OVC championship in 2016. Jacksonville State was picked to finish second while Austin Peay (two first-place votes) was tabbed third in the preseason polling.
Preseason Pitcher of the Year
Senior left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi was named the 2016 Preseason OVC Pitcher of the Year, the league announced last week. Lucchesi finished his first season in a Redhawk uniform with a 7-2 record and a 3.17 ERA. Lucchesi began the season coming out of the pen before settling in to a starting role at the beginning of conference play. He was 7-1 in league games with a 2.13 ERA. Notes After opening last week with a loss to SEC foe Tennessee, Belmont returned home to host Tennessee Tech. The Bruins dropped the first two games by scores of 6-4 (in 13 innings) and 5-1 before salvaging the finale with a 7-1 victory. The Bruins are now 15-12 in OVC play and can lock up its third OVC Tournament appearance in four years in the league with two wins this weekend. In Sunday’s victory freshman Dylan King struck out a season-high seven in seven innings while walking only one and allowing five hits and one run. Senior Aaron Quillen got a no-decision in Friday’s start but did strike out 12 in eight innings of work to increase his season strikeout total to 102, establishing a new Belmont single-season record. Offensively Belmont has 69 home runs as a team on the season which is just one away from tying the program’s single-season mark; Brennan Washington leads the Bruins with 14 rounds trippers on the season. Freshman Chas Hadden, who ranks fourth nationally in walks (1.10/game) and eighth in on-base percentage (.527), set a new Belmont single-season record with his 55th walk of the season last week. Hadden leads the team and ranks sixth in the OVC in batting average (.366).

STEVEBIESER
HEAD COACHFOURTH SEASONSOUTHEAST MISSOURI, 1989
@BIESERSR
In just three seasons at the helm of the Redhawks, head coach Steve Bieser has transformed the Southeast Missouri baseball program into a championship-caliber team in the
Ohio Valley Conference as well as a program to make waves on the national level.
Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Redhawks, Bieser carries a career head coaching record of 99-76 and 58-33 in OVC play. The Redhawks won back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season Championships in 2014 and 2015. It was the first time in program history Southeast had won back-to-back titles. The Redhawks tallied 30-win seasons in each of their championship campaigns under Bieser’s tutelage.
Southeast won its second-straight OVC crown in 2015 with a record of 22-8 in league play, 36-23 overall. The Redhawks earned a number of postseason honors. Most notably, Joey Lucchesi was named the OVC Pitcher of the Year. Lucchesi finished the season with a 3.17 ERA, a 7-2 record, and 93 strikeouts; all of which were top in the OVC. Southeast had four Second Team All-OVC members: first baseman Ryan Rippee, shortstop Branden Boggetto, designated hitter Garrett Gandolfo, and utility player Andy Lennington. Freshman Trevor Ezell picked up All-Freshman Team honors.
Southeast Missouri made its 21st-consecutive appearance in the OVC Tournament in 2015. The Redhawks advanced to the championship round of the tournament for the first time since 2008.
Other postseason honors included Capital One Academic All-American Second Team Honors bestowed upon Jason Blum, Ezell being named NCBWA Freshman All-American, and Boggetto picking up ABCA/Rawlings All-South Second Team Honors.
Junior Alex Winkelman began the next level of his baseball career when he was drafted in the 21st round of the Major
League Baseball Draft by the Houston Astros. Winkelman was the 619th overall pick in the draft and became the second draft pick under Bieser. In three years at Southeast, Winkelman compiled a 14-9 record and 4.51 ERA in 50 appearances and 35 starts. He was credited with two saves and recorded 204 strikeouts in 229.2 innings in his career.
The 2015 squad drew national attention with a pair of wins over Southeastern Conference opponents. Southeast defeated SEC powerhouse Arkansas on Mar. 18 in Fayetteville, 12-11. The Redhawks followed it up with an 8-5 victory over in-state foe Missouri on May 5.
In only his second season as head coach, Bieser’s Redhawks won the 2014 OVC regular season championship, tied a program record for wins in a season going 37-20, posted the ninth-best team batting average in the country (.309), scored the ninth-most runs in the nation (408), finished eighth in scoring (7.2 runs per game), mentored Matt Tellor, 2014 OVC Player of the Year, and Travis Hayes, the 2014 OVC Co-Pitcher of the Year, and saw three players go on to continue their professional careers on the baseball field.
The 2014 team made a name for itself by ranking nationally in a number of statistical categories as a team as well as individually. The team’s .309 batting average ranked ninth in the nation. Southeast averaged 7.2 runs a game, ranking eighth, while their 408 total runs ranked ninth. The Redhawks finished second in the country in sacrifice flies with 47 on the season. Southeast boasted a .389 on-base percentage and a .422 slugging percentage on the season. Defensively, the Redhawks turned the ninth-most double plays and averaged 1.11 per game. On the bases, Southeast ranked 10th in the nation with 97 stolen bases; stealing 1.7 bases a game.
Individually, Derek Gibson and Tellor ran the gambit in a number of categories. Tellor ranked in the top-25 in 10 different statistical categories while Gibson appeared in five top-25 lists. Tellor was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the MLB First-Year Player Draft in the 10th round. Tellor was the 313th overall pick of the draft and is the highest draft pick out of Southeast Missouri since Galen McSpadden was drafted in the sixth round of the 1974 draft. Gibson signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Cardinals on June 19, 2014. Bieser’s son, Cole, went on to sign with the Gateway Grizzlies out of the Frontier League.
Academically, the Redhawks have been equally impressive with Bieser at the helm.
His clubs produced three Academic All-Americans, eight Academic All-District picks, one OVC Scholar-Athlete, six OVC Medal of Honor recipients and 48 OVC Commissioner’s Honor

Roll selections. Southeast recorded a team GPA above 3.0 each of the last three years, grabbing one OVC Team Academic Award along the way. Additionally, Bieser’s teams are active in the community, averaging 550 team community service hours each of the last two years.
Bieser was named the fifth head coach of Southeast Missouri baseball on May 15, 2013.
Prior to taking over as head coach of the Redhawks, Bieser served as the pitching coach in 2011 and 2012.
Bieser coached starting pitcher Shae Simmons, who led the OVC in strikeouts in 2012 with 89 on his way to being named Second Team All-OVC. Simmons was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 26th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Simmons made his MLB debut May 31, 2014 against the Miami Marlins.
In 2011, the Redhawks pitching staff ranked third in the OVC in pitching recording a team ERA of 4.97, as the Redhawks recorded their first earned run average under five since 2007.
The Redhawks team ERA also improved from 2010 as the Southeast hurlers trimmed their team ERA by over one run. Bieser also mentored two pitchers to Second Team All-OVC honors in Logan Mahon and Jordan Underwood. Mahon was later drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft.
Bieser, a native of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri came to Southeast after a very successful campaign as head coach at St. John Vianney High School in Kirkwood, Missouri. In seven seasons leading the Griffins, his team won two state championships in 2004 and 2006. He compiled a record of 137-51.
Five of his players were selected in the First Year Major League Player Draft (1st, 5th, 21st, 22nd, & 42nd rounds). Over 80 percent of his high school players went on to play collegiate baseball with 16 playing at the Divisi`on I level, four attaining freshman All-America status and one, former Redhawk Jim Klocke, being named a two-time All-American.
In 2009, he took over the Danville Dans of the Prospect League. Bieser coached the Dans to the Central League Championship.
As a player, Bieser graduated from Southeast Missouri State in 1989 and was selected in the 32nd round of the 1989 June Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
On April 1, 1997, he made his Major League debut with the New York Mets as a catcher. Bieser was the ultimate utility player for
the Mets playing all three outfield positions and the catching position. The following season, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, serving as backup catcher, outfielder and top pinch hitter. Bieser finished his major league career with a .250 batting average and a perfect career major league fielding percentage over his two-year MLB career.
Bieser played 13 seasons professionally with nine of those seasons being at the Triple-A level or higher. Bieser played every position on the field in his professional career; twice doing it in the same game. He finished second in the batting race of the International League playing for the Ottawa Expos with a .322 average in 1996. Four times in his career, he finished in the top 25 in offensive statistical rankings.
Bieser finished his professional playing career in 2001 with the Memphis Redbirds when he helped lead the Redbirds in 2000 to the Triple-A World Series.
Bieser and his wife, Diahann, have a son (Cole) and three daughters, Whitley (21), Briley (18) and Carley (9).
