I feel like I am reminiscing a little bit about my summer experiences but

who doesn’t when autumn hits us with buckets of water . In August I got the opportunity to visit a cabin on Admiralty with my Dad, my Aunt Sue and family friend Scott . Since then, I’ve been reflecting on cabin life and this “home away from home” occurrence that many Alaskans experience . While some may not consider a visit to a cabin a vacation, many people do . It’s a place to escape, often there is no Internet or phone access and technology is essentially shut off . You are lucky to have running water and (gasp) electricity . To me, cabin life is adventurous; the new environment is both peaceful and exciting . Living in a more “rural” environment makes me appreciate the normalcies of life and offers diverse experiences depending on where the cabin is . I’ve experienced

a couple different types of cabin life, which are equally fun but equally very different . I categorize them in four stages: roughing it, man cave, luxury, and the Ritz .

There’s the totally rural, “low amenities” cabin

with no running water or electricity . This type of cabin usually has a heating source, four walls and a roof . I like this type of cabin for an over nighter or two days at the most . I admire those who can go longer in this environment but for me, showers are important . I encounter these types of cabins usually as Forrest Service rentals, typically kicked off by a hike to the cabin, followed by a hike out the next day or two . Packing all your gear can be hard work but is rewarding and you sleep with the feeling of ac-complishment and soreness… There is a very cozy feeling that comes with

the “roughing it” cabin experience . You are in close proximity with fellow travellers, often food, beverages and entertainment are shared . The darkness is lit by candle light and headlamps that erases the rest of the world . Once the trip is over, let’s admit it, it’s so nice to hop in a warm shower and sleep in a real bed .

Then there is the “inbetweener” cabin, which I like to call “man cave .” This cabin might have amenities like a generator, a toilet you can “flush” with buckets of unfiltered water and in my particular experience, a sauna as a shower . Though this is a man cave cabin, (not a lot of sheetrock but plastic covered insulation) the specific one that I visit is probably my most favorite cabin I travel to . It’s located on Admiralty Island near Funter Bay . The trip habitually kicks off before we even leave for the cabin . My aunt and I are usually in charge of food . I enjoy making meal plans with her, and the day before the

trip we make a grocery run in which we drink coffee and joke about how my dad won’t be thrilled with our healthy meal choices . On “travel” day we take our packed up essentials and hop in the boat, which is probably my favorite place to be where we set off on a scenic

ride to the cabin . Once we arrive and get settled, we spend our time fishing and sometimes crabbing . Our evenings consist of cocktail hour, cooking dinner, taking saunas, card games and sometimes a generator-produced movie! If the weather is nice, my aunt and I will take a dip in the ocean in the middle of our sauna-time . I am lucky enough to sleep in a separate room away from the family of snorers so sleeping is possible . The only setback to this cabin is it is located in brown bear country, which means walks, beach combing and exploration must be accompanied by a gun . I have no gun safety training so that is out of the question unless someone accompanies me .

Then there is the more “luxurious” cabin living . The one I’ve experienced specifically is a family cabin in Gustavus . It has electricity, an incinerator toilet and a “shower .” The shower is located outside the cabin and is essentially a large wooden box with a door, and for a water source we use a five gallon bucket with heated water and an old milk jug with the bottom cut out of it as a scooper . I love going to this cabin as it offers different adventures and experiences . There is a lot of cross country skiing and adventuring to do in Gustavus, not to mention it’s a lovely community to explore . There is plenty of wildlife to see, and Gustavus is within close distance to Glacier Bay National Park .

Finally, we come to “the Ritz” type of cabin, which isn’t really a cabin at all, but a house somewhere other then your own house . This type of cabin is lovely and relaxing because you can stay for a longer period of time with most of the comforts that you are used to . Depending on where the cabin is located, there is typically an array of activities to do, and this type of living takes you away (hopefully) from the stresses of everyday life .

These views on cabin life and catego-rizations are mine in particular but as diverse and adventurous as Alaskans are, I am certain people have their own thoughts, adventures and feelings about cabin life . I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed reminiscing about it!

By Dr. Summer Beattie, ND

I love it when I get feedback on an article I’ve written - good and bad... Just something to let me know you all are actually reading what I’m typing. So to say “thank you” to one of our readers, this month I’m going to share a story that was told to me by someone who enjoyed the article from the July issue, “Home - Where Your Story Begins…” She said she loved it because it made her think about how different-ly each home functions, each story happening within its walls shaping our own version of normal. She told me how this

article brought up a childhood memory for her that I can in turn share with you.

As a litlle girl, she knew that other families had lived in her home before she and her family, and it only seemed logical

that the house must have ghosts that still shared the residence. In her young mind, it made perfect sense that during the day, she and her family were free to fully occupy the home, and during the night, when everyone was asleep in their beds, the lights out and completely dark, it was the ghosts turn to come out and

use the house for their own. This wasn’t a frightful idea to her, but it did pose a bit of a problem when she woke in the middle of the night and would need to use the restroom. She was old enough that she wanted some privacy when using the bathroom, and so she was concerned that if she turned the light on, the ghosts would be able to see her using the toilet. So she decided that if she should have to use the restroom at night, she would leave the lights all off.

THE FAMILY “norm”...

CONTINUED: THE FAMILY “norm”...This of course led to another issue for other members of the family, because when they would get up to use the restroom themselves, they would assume the bathroom was unoccupied (because no lights were on) and would often walk in to find her already using the toilet. While a bit funny in and of itself, the beautiful part of this story is that when she explained her reasoning, no one in her family tried to correct her, make fun of her, or convince her she had to turn a light on when using the dark, dark bathroom. They simply accepted. In her family it became normal to never turn a light on when using the bathroom at night.

I love it! How often do we accept the idiosyncrasies of our family members simply

because “if it matters to them, it is important enough to matter to us - even when it doesn’t make sense or can’t possibly be right? How often does their peculiari-ty become our new normal? I find that my natural inclination is to argue that my habit or way of doing things is a better way. It is a stretching of my instinct

to let my daughter do things her way if it is different from my own. From the way she wants to

wear her hair and clothes to the way she wants to put something together, I have to stop myself from saying, “that’s not how it goes.” Truth is there are lots of “right” ways to do many things - not wrong, just different; and we all might just learn something new while reinforcing a positive relationship if we can embrace

another’s “normal” at home, school or work.

What happens when you ship a bunch of contractors/builders, a developer

(who also builds) a realtor, an executive officer, an office manager, and a biologist off to camp? Sounds like a reality television show worth watching to me . Although there was a grand entrance and exit (there were actually many), there was no drama! There were no television cameras, only a good time in which all these great people came together to fix and repair cabins at the Boy Scout Camp .

Eagle River Scout Camp is located north of Juneau at Eagle Beach . It is owned by the Great Alaska Council of Boy Scouts of America . There are approximately four to five camp areas on the property consisting of three to four cabins each and a few other cabins south of a main lodge which acts as a great dining hall, and kitchen for the camp . There is a first aid cabin, archery range, rifle range and an assortment of other structures on the property . There are also new private bathrooms installed earlier this summer .

The Setting: Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association (SEABIA) came together for a work party over the course of a weekend in late August to help out the Camp by fixing and repairing some the

cabins with donated materials and labor provided by members of SEABIA . A couple of weekends prior to the work party, a few of the contractors and the Executive Officer of SEABIA hiked out to look at the cabins to prepare a materials list and to prioritize work so that the camp could take advantage of licensed builders who had the ability to work on the more technical issues with some of the cabins that needed attention . Materials were then gathered, a list of projects developed, and the cast was set .

The Cast and Crew: You would think that putting a bunch of leaders in the building industry together would be the perfect set for a reality show . Not quite!

“The part that really jumped out at me was how we all have different methods, and work on different crews but when we jumped on the projects it was like we’d always worked together, everything meshed really well,” said Victor Banaszak, of VRB Construction .

Volunteers included Victor with VRB Construction, Russ McDougal with Mac’s Design and Construction, Laura Baker; Executive officer of SEABIA and Mac’s Design and Construction, Dave Berends who

volunteers with the Boy Scout Camp, Rich Harris, RH Development and president of SEABIA, Mike Ban, Exit Realty of Juneau, and Judy Lum, a Fisheries biologist with the State of Alaska, as well as documentarian of the work with the photos, Dave Hanna, with Alaska Concrete Casting and Brad Fail, with VRB Construction, Susan Stopher, with Stopher Construction . Boy Scout Camp volunteers who work at the camp with maintenance and other programs where Dave Behrends and Jerry Taylor . Also present to help with the grunt work were Amelia Stopher (age 10) and Oliver Stopher (age 7), though rumor has it that they may have spent much of their time having fun on one of Juneau’s rare sunny days this summer on the beach, this report however has not been confirmed .

It all started on a Friday evening when many of us met at the trailhead to hike out and camp . To get to camp is about a two mile hike . We rendezvoused at the trail head to load materials and tools into a gator with a trailer to haul equipment and finalize logistics . Dave Hanna came the next morning with his machine to bring out even more tools . I hiked out with Oliver and Amelia and when we got to camp, Rich Harris had

already arrived via shortcut . To get to the trailhead, we drove about 30 minutes to the trailhead and then hiked about 45 minutes to camp . Rich drove to the airport, hopped in his Husky and flew 10 minutes and landed right in front of the lodge on the beach . Rich had been wandering around camp for a little while wondering if we had skipped out, until he found us . Mike,

Judy, Russ, Dave with the Gator, and Jerry finally made it out while Rich took off for the night, he would get his camping gear and return the next day to help during the day and stay Saturday night . We had a good diner then I signed off with the kids to make some s’mores to re-energize for the work ahead of us tomorrow .

Saturday came early with a nice big breakfast and list of what needed to be accomplished with the amount of people we had to make up crews . Laura, Victor, Brad, Susan, and Rich were ready Saturday morning and chomping at the bit to tackle these cabins . We had two cabins that needed roofs replaced, a couple of sunroofs in cabins that were leaking that needed repair and re-flashing, a lot of trees that had fallen in a wind storm, and an assortment of other items that needed attention . Brad and Victor tore the aluminum roofing off one roof while Rich and I torn another cabins roof off . The ground crew, (since they were not contractors and couldn’t be on the roof ) consisted of Laura, Mike, Judy, Amelia, and Oliver . They picked up all the jagged roofing material and piled it neatly so it could be hauled away . Russ, who was also on the ground crew was cutting the “new” recycled steel roofing left over from one of Victor’s roofing jobs from a couple of months earlier . The roofing already had 25 good years of service and will last another 25+ years with the new fasteners .

Meanwhile, Dave Hanna with his swamp buggy was taking care of the downed trees like Paul Bunyan! In fact, he made such short work out of the downed trees and cut up enough wood that it would keep every Boy Scout busy splitting for the entire next summer .

The roof took a little longer than expected since we had to replace some rotted sheathing before we could put new roofing on . By the end of the day we had one roof finished and another which was close to being finished but we ran out of roofing screws . No problem there, we had a plane at our disposal, so a trip to the hardware store via plane was quicker than a trip to the hardware store in a vehicle from North Douglas . Plus, we needed a break with a little beer and Aleve to get us through the evening’s festivities especially after such a long day of the roof .

We hauled all the burnable scraps to the beach in front of the lodge, a pile that would stack a story high and started a bonfire while Jerry made an open pit charcoal fire to cook burgers . Meanwhile Susan, Laura, and Judy put together all the sides and fixings to feed enough hungry contractors for miles . We all ate, and sat around the campfire and telling stories until late in the evening . After the fire died down and the story telling tapered off

we all retired to our cabins to get ready for the final push Sunday morning .

Sunday came again all too soon and we had breakfast . The breakfast had a meat smorgasbord consisting of bacon, ham, bacon, sausage, bacon, and bacon . Eggs, hash browns, and toast were on the menu, as well as, pancakes made by Amelia . We got to work quickly on Sunday knowing that most of us worked all week right through the weekend and needed to be on the jobsite bright and early Monday morning . Plus, clouds were starting to roll in and rain was coming . We had our “plane delivered” screws to finish the last roof thanks to the quick jump down the canal by Rich . Everyone should have a plane on the jobsite; it would make runs to the lumber yards much quicker . We all finished up the projects we started and made it home on time for dinner Sunday evening .

We had accomplished many of the goals

that we had planned to at the Boy Scout Camp . Two roofs were replaced, downed

timber was taken care of, two cabins were painted on the interior, two cabins sunroofs were repaired and replaced, and a few other odd and ends buttoned up . Although we didn’t accomplish all of our goals, we have many projects to complete in the future including rebuilding an oil shed and some power washing, we did tackle the more dire items out at camp that weekend, but are looking forward to going back to spend another weekend next year .

The work we did wasn’t like work at all, everyone worked very hard but we all worked well together and we all had a great time . On top of that we all bonded as a board along with fellow builders in the building industry . We would love to have more help next year to accomplish all the projects at Boy Scout camp . It’s not work if we are all having fun!

Tile has always been a popular material for walls and flooring

because it is durable, easy to clean and moisture resistant, but it’s also versatile, beautiful and offers infinite design possibilities. As with any material, there are pluses and minuses to installing tile. When used on floors, tile can feel cold and become slippery underfoot. The thought of scrubbing grout can also be a deterrent. These issues can be easily resolved by using tiles with a textured surface and sealing grout for ease of cleaning. Radiant heat

can be installed beneath floor tile to keep feet warm in the winter.

The four most commonly used types of tile are ceramic, porcelain, glass and stone. Ceramic tile is generally the most affordable tile material. It is made from natural clay that’s been baked at a high temperature and usually coated with some kind of glaze. Ceramic tile is rated for hardness, based a scale of 0 to 5. Tile rated 0 to 2 is suitable for use on walls. Tile rated 3 can be used in almost any residential

application, and tile rated 4 to 5 is durable enough for commercial use. While subway and square tile are classic, stylish shapes, mosaics and geometric forms (chevrons, ogees and hexagons) are becoming increasingly popular.

Porcelain tiles are baked at higher temperatures than ceramic tiles, so they are harder and have a lower water absorption rate than ceramic. Another benefit to using porcelain is that the color is evenly

distributed throughout the tile, so a chip is less noticeable. All of the color in ceramic tile is contained in the top layer. While these properties are great, they do cause porcelain tile to be priced higher than ceramic tile. One note to the D.I.Y. enthusiast, because porcelain has a low porosity level, it requires a different compound for setting than ceramic tile.

There are a lot of exciting trends happening right now in porcelain tile. Tiles are being designed to mimic natural materials, like grasscloth, wood and leather, that wouldn’t normally be used in moist areas like bathrooms. These tiles are embossed with texture and virtually in-distinguishable from the real thing. Looking for both the texture and soft feeling of leather? Tiles made from recycled rubber come in a variety of colors and textures, including faux ostrich and crocodile.

Glass tile is primarily used in kitchen backsplashes and on shower walls. The options are endless, from clear styles, to frosted, colored or textured glass. They also add depth, sparkle and luminescence when mixed with ceramic tile or stone. Glass tiles can be made from up to 85% recycled content, making them an eco-friendly option as well. Glass manu-facturers have come up with some interesting new innovations over the last few years. Molded relief patterns can now be pressed into glass using specialized equipment. Metallic glass tiles are another new development. They are made by coating the back of glass tiles with metallic paint, to create a three-di-mensional effect.

Natural stone is a great choice if you’re looking to impart natural, organic beauty in a space. Although

stone is very durable, it is susceptible to stains. To protect your investment it must be sealed and properly maintained. Many different types of stone are available, but the most popular types are marble, granite, slate, soapstone, sandstone and

l i m e s t o n e . Each of these stones has their own unique char-acteristics and some are more expensive than others. Marble and granite are high-end options that give a bathroom or kitchen an instant air of elegance. Due to their color and texture,

slate, soapstone, sandstone and limestone lend themselves to more informal interiors.

The type of tile you choose for a space will be influenced by several factors; design, durability, ease of installation and maintenance, and cost. Whatever material you pick, tile is great way to add color, texture and

pattern to any space.

Combine pears, juice, and nutmeg in a large bowl; toss well . Add brown sugar and flour; toss gently . Arrange fruit on dough leaving a 2-inch border . (Pears will be piled high on dough .) Fold edges of dough toward center; pressing gently to seal (dough will only partially cover pears) . Bake at 400° for 30 minutes or until crust is lightly browned (filling may leak slightly during cooking) . Add the burnt sugar topping at the very end and sprinkle with more cheese for the last few minutes of cooking . Cool galette on a wire rack .

Insert Sound of Music score here… Flakey pastry and white cheddar mixed up with juicy pears, these are a few of my favorite things…

Yes fall is amazing with the splendor of harvest upon us all as we wrap up our projects while we still have some light and before the snows fly . Here is a great recipe for a Galette . What is a galette you ask? It’s basically a

free form crusty cake with a filling, it can be sweet or savory and I love this classic combination of both . Think of it as a single crust pie where the sides are too big and folded into the middle but the middle is all bubbly and gooey .

White Cheddar pairs well with Wines such as Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, goes amazing with light beers such as a Pilsner Style Lagers .

My favorite Cheddar Varieties that you should be able to easily source are Beecher’s Reserve Cheddar, Tillamook Aged Sharp White Cheddar (in the black brick), Cabot Creamery Vintage Aged and Rogue Creamery Sharp Cheddar . Cheddar is English and originated around the 12th century,

and yes there is a town of Cheddar as well as being one of the most popular chesses on the planet . So go ahead try a variety that you haven’t had before, go for sharp and aged… the longer the more intense flavor .

Pears are thought to have originated in present-day western China and have been cultivated since antiquity (pears are mentioned in the oldest Greek writings, and they were cultivated by the ancient Romans) . Today there are over 20 recognized primary species of pears, plus about 10 subspecies and naturally occurring hybrids . My absolute favorite variety is the Roya Rivera pears from Harry & David and so happy that they now have an organic version as well, they are plump, juicy full of flavor and also cook very well . If you’re looking for a nice alternative look for a nice Anjou pear to bake, it will stay firm and not fall apart… Pears will brown like apples and other fruits and for this type of dish you want to slice it and place in the dough immediately after you slice it, also for presentation try and keep your slices in order and just place them on the dough .

From my table to yours,

Enjoy! Amber
