CONTENTS

The sun is finally shining after a very gloomy winter, and our passengers are getting ready to dust off their sunhats and swim rings and hit those golden sandy beaches.

This summer we are excited to continue with our usual favourite routes to Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza with TUI. And with the extended summer schedule with Flybe we are offering even more choice to passengers wishing to take advantage of such fantastic routes as Faro, Malaga and Alicante.

We have recently achieved one of the greatest accolades for outstanding customer service and have been named the Best Airport in Europe by ACI Airport Service Quality Awards. I am extremely proud of our brilliant team, and this award is a true testament to the hard work of every single person at the airport.

We are getting close to the end of our epic relationship with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Ambulance, but we still have a lot of events up our sleeves to support this fantastic charity. Our famous Runway Run is just a month away with around 1000 runners preparing for an early start. This will be the biggest event of its kind in the UK, so we are looking forward to welcoming the brave volunteers and participants!

We are very disappointed to hear about FlyLolo’s decision to cease its summer programme from Southampton. We continue to progress our exciting plans for growth and are developing the destinations we have to offer to increase choice for all of our passengers. Despite the Brexit uncertainty our passengers should continue to book exciting holidays with confidence, and picking Southampton as the Airport of Choice.

The grass is still green on our lawn. Safe flights!

Sharing a slice of success, our passengers enjoyed a special cake in March to celebrate 25,000 flights to Amsterdam with Flybe. To make the day truly special, we “conspired” with Flybe and chose one lucky passenger for a travel voucher giveaway. Natalie Barton was the 25th person to book that specific flight and was in for a lovely surprise when she received two free tickets to Amsterdam. She is now planning to take her boyfriend for a romantic getaway in this stunning city. Don’t you just love bringing smiles on people’s faces?

THE AIRPORT TOOK ON #TRASHTAG CHALLENGEMembers of staff dedicated their time in April to helping members of the local community clear litter and dangerous rubbish dumped at Frogs Copse. Joining forces with local residents, the team collected more than ten full bags of rubbish, including golf clubs, plastic signs and pieces of carpet, and reported two cases of fly-tipping.The spring litter-picking was organised as part of the popular cleaning movement called Trash Tag. The movement encourages people to clean up the environment around them. The airport is already planning a series of other TrashTag events in the area later in spring. If you are part of a community local to the airport and have an event we can help support, please contact us by emailing [email protected]

Our airport is celebrating after winning a major international award for excellence in customer service - the Best Airport in Europe in the ACI Airport Service Quality Awards. Our passengers have given us a massive vote of confidence in the service we provide, and this is a testament to the hard work of everyone at the airport.

Our future is looking extremely bright with our exciting development plans, and this award is a massive boost in our ambition to become the region’s Airport of Choice.

Transcription by Kate AtkinsonIn 1940, eighteen-year old Juliet Armstrong is reluctantly recruited into the world of espionage. Sent to an obscure department of MI5 tasked with monitoring the comings and goings of British Fascist sympathizers, she discovers the work to be, by turns, both tedious and terrifying. But after the war has ended, she presumes the events of those years have been relegated to the past for ever. Ten years later, now a producer at the BBC, Juliet is unexpectedly confronted by figures from her past. Transcription is a work of rare depth and texture, a bravura modern novel of extraordinary power, wit and empathy. It is a triumphant work of fiction from one of this country’s most exceptional writers.

First Man In by Ant MiddletonNo one is born a leader. But through sheer determination and by confronting

life’s challenges, Ant Middleton has come to know the meaning of true leadership. In First Man In, he shares the core lessons he’s learned over the

course of his fascinating, exhilarating life.To survive the gruelling

selection process to become a member of the elite you need toughness, aggression, meticulous attention to detail and unrelenting self-discipline, all traits that make for the best leaders.

Secret Barrister Welcome to the world of the Secret Barrister. This book highlights the stories of life inside the courtroom. How can you defend a child-abuser you suspect to be guilty? What do you say to someone sentenced to ten years who you believe to be innocent? What is the law and why do we need it? And why do they wear those stupid wigs? Both a searing first-hand account of the human cost of the criminal justice system, and a guide to how we got into this mess. The Secret Barrister wants to show you what it’s really like and why it really matters.

Past Tense by Lee Child The present can be tense . . . A young couple trying to get to New York City are stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. Before long

they’re trapped in an ominous game of life and death. But the past can be worse...

Meanwhile, Jack Reacher sets out on an epic road trip across America. He

doesn’t get far. Deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been - the town where his father was born. But when he arrives he is told no one named Reacher ever lived there. Now he wonders: who’s lying? As the tension ratchets up and these two stories begin to entwine, the stakes have never been higher for Reacher.

Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid by Jeff KinneyA BRAND NEW DIARY OF A WIMPY KID STORY that will have you rolling with laughter, from number one bestselling author Jeff Kinney! Hi my name is Rowley Jefferson and this is my book. Now I have a diary just like my friend Greg... Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has chronicled his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals. Now it’s Rowley’s turn to give his side of the story. But Rowley has agreed to tell Greg’s story along the way, too. (After all, Greg says one day he will be rich and famous and the world will need to know how he managed it). But Rowley’s stories about Greg might not be quite what his friend had in mind . . .

The Mister by EL James (50 Shades of Grey author) London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he

struggles to face. But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Just who is Alessia Demachi? Can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own? From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.

The Reckoning by John Grisham In his unforgettable new novel, John Grisham tells the story of an unthinkable murder, the bizarre trial that followed it, and its profound and lasting effect

on the people of Ford County.Pete Banning was Clanton’s favourite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family; a farmer, father, and a faithful member of the Methodist Church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the Church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Pete’s only statement about it was ‘I have nothing to say’.What turned Pete from a pillar of the community into cold-hearted killer? And why won’t he confide in anyone? All his closest family knows is that it must have been something devastating- and that the fallout will haunt them, and the town, for decades to come . . .

Walk The Floor With… Andy Agnew, Airport Firefighter.

What does your daily job involve? My role in the Airport Fire Service involves responding to emergency situations with an aircraft, vehicles, all airport buildings and offering assistance at first aid calls for passengers and staff. A major part of my time is taken up training, maintaining vehicles equipment and also Wildlife Hazard Management. I organise a lot of training for my colleagues as well as external companies that come to take advantage of the many courses offered by our very own EchoFour Training Centre.

What is your favourite part of what you do? I really enjoy the training that we do. Meeting all the different people from different walks of life flying in and out of Southampton is always great, much like getting to know the people that choose one of our City & Guilds or QualSafe accredited courses

How long have you been with Southampton Airport? I have been in the Fire Service here at Southampton Airport for over 11 years now, transferring across from a great team in Security. It is nice to see a lot of the people I worked with when I transit from landside to airside.

What training did you have to go through before you could do this job? The training starts with a six-week initial training course, followed by a year-long probation on the Fire Station. After completing my probation I was able to work towards other qualifications and instructing tickets.

What made you decide to work in aviation/at the airport? I knew people that already worked here at Southampton, and they had told me it was an exciting and rewarding place to work at with a great team of people. It was the Fire Service I wanted to join but jobs rarely came up so I was happy when the Security position came up as it was a step closer.

What do you like about working at Southampton Airport? Well, I’m doing the job I always wanted, with a great team of people that support each other and actually care about the airport. Our Fire Service has seen a great year with the success of EchoFour, becoming a recognised training provider for so many different courses and being able to support the business in such a positive way.

What has been the highlight of your time working here? The highlight for me so far was designing and the arrival of the Confined Space training rig on the Fire ground which allows us to deliver such realistic and bespoke training. That, and every time I get to drive one of the trucks *laughs*.

What is your favourite aircraft? It has to be the Spitfire obviously, but the Airbus H135 flown by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance comes a close second.

What is your favourite destination from Southampton Airport? Edinburgh, great for a weekend break!

What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? Climbing and kayaking are my hobbies, however these days any adventure with my wife and kids is perfect in my opinion.

Mouth-watering foodThere’s no denying that the French do food well. From flakey

croissants to fluffy baguettes, every type of cheese you can think

of, and perfectly mastered chocolates and pastries. Whether you’re

spilling out of a cafe onto the streets of Paris or dining with a view of

the French Alps, France is heaven for foodies. If food is your thing then you’ll love a tour of Paris with Secret Food Tours. Embark

Situated on the west coast of Brittany, Brest is one of the finest

natural harbours on the continent with plenty of gastronomic

delights including Breton galettes, crepes, delicious cider and

fresh seafood. A “tasty” attraction here is a visit to the Histoire de

Chocolat.

From the vine to the wineIf it’s not the food we relate to France then it’s the wine! A country

filled with vineyards that produce some of the finest wines in the

world. Not only a great tipple, but the vineyards make for a great

day out and cultural experience. See the process from vine to wine

and spend a day sipping French reds and whites in some of France’s

most picturesque locations.

Visit the famous Loire Valley in Chabris, experience the world

famous vineyards of Bordeaux and sample wine from its origin on

a Bordeaux wine tour, or relax in the French Riviera on an Azur wine

tour.

Rivers flow through Bergerac’s landscape dominated by vineyards,

which are the main reason that many people come visit; if you’re

lucky, you might be able to get hold of a bottle of Montbazillaz – a

velvety white wine, drunk on special occasions. To the north of the

river, there are still many smaller wine producers, creating some

excellent red Bergeracs.

Cultural and historical sightseeing If you crave a bit of culture and love to bask in history then France

is filled with treasures that are sure to enrich your travels. Of course

Paris is filled with landmarks, museums and art galleries, from the

Louvre Museum to the Palace of Versailles, all a must for your cultural bucket list.

If you head to the south of France you’ll discover some of the more

unusual historical sites such as incredible Roman aqueduct called

Pont du Gard at the heart of a small town called Vers-Pont-du-Gard, that spans the Gardon River and boasts three incredible

levels of arches. Fly direct to with Flybe and Air France

With a choice of 15 French destinations when you fly from Southampton Airport, your perfect holiday to France is just a short flight away. With each region offering everything from beach holidays to cultural adventures, there are plenty of reasons to visit France this summer. Places like Avignon in the South of France are further evidence

that there’s much more than just beaches and film festivals there.

Avignon is packed with history and fascinating architecture.

Set on the banks of the River Rhone peppered with history and

culture and probably best known for the remarkable Palais de Papes

(Popes’ Palace.) It’s also a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site

full of architectural treasures, cobbled streets, and 18th century

waterwheels.

Rennes has many charming parks to discover as well as stone

fortifications dating back to the 1st century when Romans ruled the

region. A visit to the Duchesne tower & wall are a must, as well as

The Parlement de Bretagne; built in the 17th century, houses a vast

array of political history as well as a law court & art gallery showcasing

local art dating from the 1600’s.

Spectacular beachesIf you enjoy holidaying on golden sand and dipping your toes in clear

waters, then the spectacular beaches in France will win your heart.

The Grande Plage de Biarritz (The Big Beach) in the heart of Biarritz

is ideal for families. Whilst the children enjoy building sandcastles in

the golden sand you can relax in the shade of the famous blue, yellow,

green or red striped beach huts. The stunning Beach Mourillon in

Toulon west of the French Riviera is the perfect spot to relax on the

grass bank under the trees, play on the golden sand, and splash in the

There’s no denying that Ibiza, otherwise known

as The White Island, has become synonymous

for being ‘the’ party mecca but the island is also

a destination ideal for your family holiday. Hop

onboard at Southampton Airport and encounter

the family side of Ibiza.

Of course the number one spot for families is

going to be the beach. The island has some truly

beautiful beaches ranging from rocky coves to

white sandy shores that are among the cleanest

in the Med. Your family will love playing in the

soft sand, exploring the coves, and paddling in

the clear sea.

Cala Bassa beach, on the west of the island is

one of the top beaches for families to visit. The

shallow cove that sweeps across the beach

offers rock pools for snorkelling, clambering and

exploring. You’ll also find pedalos and inflatables

for hire for some extra family-fun.

Discover the family side of Ibiza this summer

If you want a more peaceful beach for your family, Cala Vadella is a pretty protected and peaceful bay, surrounded by pine clad hills. This big, wide beach of fine white sand slopes gently into shallow waters close to shore - good for fun and games with the children.

If your family want a bit of adventure and a break from the beach, you can explore the island on a Jeep safari that take you off road to discover Ibiza’s mesmeric landscapes both inland and along the coast.

For younger families the Aguamar water park makes for a fun day out. There are slides, chutes and tubes with varying shriek factors, as well as pools for all ages, play areas, lawns and plenty of sunbeds for you to take a precious few moments to relax in.

Of course the array of places to eat in Ibiza will mean finding a spot for your family to dine won’t be a problem, but for an idyllic family experience you won’t be able to beat a picnic or BBQ on the beach. Perfect for combining family-fun and some R&R!

FIRST ESTABLISHED IN 1948, LA SABLONNERIE RETAINS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN OLD FARMHOUSE BUILT OVER 400 YEARS AGO AND IS SITUATED ON THE LOVELY ISLAND OF SARK IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS.La Sablonnerie is owned and managed

by Elizabeth Perrée. Guests return-year-

after-year to recapture the beauty of the

island and to enjoy the excellent cuisine,

wine, cosiness and friendliness that is

evident at the hotel.

Of course being so close to the sea,

freshly-caught fish and famous Sark

lobsters are popular specialities of the

hotel. La Sablonnerie has been featured by

the Which? hotel guide as ‘The place to stay

in the Channel Islands’, and also received

the highly coveted award from Condé

Nast Johansen - ‘Small Hotel of the Year’

as well as being nominated as their “Most

Romantic Hotel” and now Les Routier’s

“Hotel of the Year” Award. Needless to say,

you have to visit us to find out exactly what

everyone is talking about.

Arrive by ferry or private boat, horse and

carriage or just shank’s pony to enjoy the

charm of La Sablonnerie, a hotel of rare

quality situated in the southern part of

Sark, even more beautiful, remote and

romantic than the rest. Nestled in gorgeous

gardens, a haven for lovers of peace and

tranquillity; birds, butterflies and flowers

how could one not enjoy this amazing

paradise, a stepping stone to heaven, even

if you just arrive for one of our glorious

cream teas or a Lobster Salad in the garden.

Guests gather in the bar or the rose and

lavender scented garden for a cocktail or

a glass of champagne before dining. The

bar with its roaring log fire is a convivial

meeting place. After dining, guests return

to the bar to sit and converse with each

other. Some guests take advantage

of Little Sark as the perfect place for a

moonlit walk or simply gazing at star-

studded skies. Sark offers exceptional

star-gazing due to its lack of light pollution.

Sark is how life used to be, it is like stepping

back into an Enid Blyton book, what

dreams are made of, but still having the

modern luxuries.

La Sablonnerie is a hotel of rare quality

situated in a time warp of simplicity on

the tiny, idyllic Channel Island of Sark,

where no motor cars are allowed and life

ambles along at a peaceful, unhurried

pace. The hotel has an enviable reputation

for its superb food and wines; local butter,

fresh cream, meat, fruit and vegetables

which, where possible, are sourced from

the hotel’s own farm and gardens. The

hotel accommodation is very clean

and comfortable and totally geared to

unhurried relaxation.

It has a strong international clientele who

visit regularly …. it is like having friends to

stay, and of course, picking up a string of

awards and accolades is terrific.

Solely Resident or Principally ResidentAn individual is solely resident in Guernsey if they are otherwise “Resident Only” as above, save for the fact that they are not also present in one other jurisdiction for the requisite 91 days.

An individual will be treated as “principally resident” in a calendar year if:

(a) he spends at least 182 days in Guernsey during the year, or

(b) he spends at least 91 days in Guernsey during the year and, during the four preceding calendar years, he has spent at least 730 days in Guernsey, or

(c) he takes up permanent residence in the Island, is resident only as defined and is solely or principally resident in the following Year of Charge.

An individual who is “solely” or “principally resident” in Guernsey is liable to Guernsey income tax on their total worldwide income at a flat rate after personal allowances and deductions at a flat rate of 20% unless tax capping applies.

Non-ResidentAn individual, who is neither resident only, solely or principally resident will generally be non-resident and is broadly only liable to Guernsey income tax on Guernsey source income such as employment or property income. Passive investment income, such as Guernsey bank interest, is generally not taxable.

Tax Capping for Guernsey ResidentsIt is possible to cap exposure to income tax in Guernsey as an alternative to paying a flat rate of 20%.

The maximum tax liability for any individual who does not have Guernsey source income will be £130,000 per annum.

For those who have both Guernsey and non-Guernsey source income (Guernsey bank interest does not count as Guernsey source income) the maximum tax liability is £260,000 per annum.

It is also possible to cap the non-Guernsey source income at £130,000 and pay 20% on any Guernsey source income if this is beneficial.

With effect from 1 January 2018, a tax cap of £50,000 per annum has been introduced for individuals in their first four years of residence.

In order for the tax cap to apply, an individual must meet the following conditions:

– be principally resident in Guernsey

– pay £50,000 or more in document duty in respect of an Open Market property purchased on or after 1 January 2018: this is the duty payable on property purchases of £1.32 million or more (£1.5 million to 31 December 2018)

– make the purchase either 12 months (6 months to 31 December 2018) before or after the date of taking up residence in Guernsey.

A £50,000 tax cap is also available to Alderney residents under specific conditions.

Income from Guernsey land and buildings remains taxable at 20% in addition to any tax cap paid.

Double tax treaty and pensionsUnder the terms of the Double Tax Treaty with the UK, pensions are only taxable in the taxpayer’s country of residence. This means that for individuals moving to Guernsey, their UK income tax liability will be replaced by a Guernsey income tax liability and the rate of tax will fall from a maximum 45% to 20%.

Individuals classed as resident only in Guernsey are not regarded to be Guernsey resident for the purpose of the treaty. Relief will therefore not be available in these circumstances.

In addition it is possible for Guernsey residents to transfer UK pension schemes to a Guernsey scheme.

UK pensions or former UK pensions are classed for Guernsey tax purposes as non-Guernsey source and tax capping may be in point in certain circumstances.

Conclusion At the start of this article we described some of the non-financial reasons for living in Guernsey and in conclusion we believe that the island, with its picturesque beaches, stunning cliffs, winding country lanes and a way of life that echoes of days gone by, offers much more than just a beneficial tax climate. Guernsey is a lifestyle choice for many where the work life balance is very much in focus.

Living in Guernsey

Guernsey is an independent self-governing island and is renowned for being a safe place to live with beautiful beaches, scenery and cliff walks.

For many it is surprisingly easy to become a resident of Guernsey. Individuals with a British or EU passport have an automatic right of abode and can immediately buy and live in any of the many fantastic properties available on the “open market”. Individuals other than British and EU passport holders can also obtain a right to live here and occupy open market accommodation, via an investor or entrepreneur visa depending on circumstances. Generally individuals who can obtain a “leave to enter” the UK can also reside in Guernsey on making an application to do so.

Guernsey is therefore a very attractive place to live because of its proximity to the UK and Europe, its safe environment and easy availability of property. In addition to this, the tax system is relatively benign compared to many other jurisdictions.

Guernsey does not levy capital gains tax, inheritance or wealth tax, VAT, GST or gift taxes. There is a flat rate of tax of 20% for individuals and companies are subject to a standard rate of 0%.

There is an intermediate rate of income tax at 10% for corporate income derived from sources including banking, fiduciary fund administration and insurance business; and there is a higher rate of income tax at 20% for corporate income derived from a regulated utility, or from land and buildings situated in Guernsey.

Reserves of non Guernsey companies that are in existance prior to the individual taking up Guernsey residence, and that are distributed within two years can be regarded as capital in the hands of the individual for Guernsey tax purposes and therefore will be free of Guernsey tax.

Tax residencyGuernsey tax residence is based on the number of days an individual spends in the Island. A “day” is treated as being spent in Guernsey if an individual is in the Island at midnight. There are a number of categories of residence for Guernsey tax purposes:

Resident onlyAn individual is regarded as “resident only” in Guernsey for tax purposes in a calendar year if he is present in one other jurisdiction for 91 days or more, is also present in Guernsey for less than 182 days and:

(a) he spends 91 days or more in Guernsey during the year, or

(b) he spends 35 days or more in Guernsey in that year and, during the four preceding years, he spent 365 days or more in Guernsey.

Individuals who are resident only are, as an alternative to paying 20% on their worldwide income, able to elect to pay a “standard charge”, currently set at £30,000. This provides that non-Guernsey source income is outside the scope of Guernsey tax even if remitted to Guernsey, and the standard charge “franks” the tax liability on up to £150,000 of Guernsey source income.

If Guernsey source income was to exceed £150,000 further tax would be due as appropriate. It should be noted that the same annual charge applies for a married couple as it does for an individual.

The first and only distillery on the Isle of Wight

was licensed in 2014 by friends Xavier Baker

and Conrad Gauntlett. Combining a wealth of

experience in brewing and wine-making with

locally sourced ingredients, they have created a

range of premium spirits that express the beauty

and character of the island they love. Situated

on the outskirts of Ryde in stunning countryside,

visitors are invited to watch the distilling process,

sample the spirits on offer in the Mermaid Bar

or enjoy a gin & tonic on the terrace, looking out

over the valley.

A small batch, hand-crafted spirit, the distillery’s

signature spirit Mermaid Gin captures the essence

of the Island, blending locally sourced botanicals,

including rock samphire foraged from chalk cliffs,

to produce its smooth yet complex flavour.

Alongside Mermaid, the Isle of Wight Distillery

produces a range of premium spirits, including

whisky, the first barrel of which was laid down in

2015, Mermaid Vodka and HMS Victory-branded

Navy Strength Barrel-aged Gin and Rum, which

incorporates real oak from the famous warship

in a unique and exclusive partnership with the

National Museum of the Royal Navy. The spirit

range is hand-crafted in small batches and slowly

distilled before being cut with local spring water

and bottled on the Island. The result is an award-

winning range of spirits with a contemporary

style, layered complexity and signature smooth

delivery.

The Isle of Wight Distillery is committed to

environmentally friendly production, the

preservation of the Island and the marine

environment.
