LesleywasmyelderbrotherwhowasbornandraisedatNewtown,Sydney.TheO’Reillyfamilywasoneofmanyboysandgirls.

DuringWorldWar2hejoinedtheRAAFasamechanicalengineermaintainingtheflyingCatalina’s.AftertheWar,LesretrainedasacarpenterandwithhiswifeNaidamovedtoCollaroyPlateauandstartedtheirfamily.Hejoined“thefamilyclub”Sth.Narra.SLSCin1946,withmybrotherMichael&I(Chica).HegainedhisBronzeMedallionin1947atNthNarrabeen,inaratherlargesurf,asNorthyisknownfor.Leswasanactivememberoftheclubformanyyearsthereafter.

Leshadalotofgoodmates,asmanyoftheyoungServiceMenalsoreturnedhometotheirfamiliesandtheirclub.HelovedSthNarraandverymuchenjoyedtheSundaymorningsurfraces,beachandnoveltyevents.

OvertheyearshebecameanardentgolferandwasanactivememberwiththeManlyWarringahLeaguesClubGolfClub.HelovedplayingintheSthNarraannualgolfdayat“RoyalAvalon”andwasalwaysawillingsupportinassistingourFredBertramwiththe“tot”ofrumandbonoxafterthehitoffafterthefirstteeinthoseearlywintermornings.

Leswasalwaysa“behindthescenes”workerwhodiligentlyassistedwhereeverhecould,especiallyeveryFridayeveninginrunningthechookrafflesattheRoyalAntlerHotel.(2bob2birdswashiscallsign).Healsoparticipatedinmanyclubactivitiesinasupportiveroleratherthan“frontrunner”.

LesalwaysencouragedhischildrentobepartoftheSthNarrafamilycommunityandofhisfoursonsonealsohadanactivepartindevelopingtheclub.

LesandNaida’slifewasoneofhardstruggleaftertheWarandthenraisingtheirchildren:notmuchdifferentfromtoday;buttheylovedtheirfamilyclub.Theydidwhattheycouldandenjoyedtheexperiencesaffordedthem.

WhenItookonthePresidencythisseason,IwasexcitedaboutthisnewadventureanddevelopingtheFun,SocialandSupportivecultureatSouthNarrabeenwhilstmaintainingthehigheststandardsinLifesavingandEducation.InfollowingthosewhohaveledthisgreatClubbeforeme,IsetouttoimproveouroverallpositionasaClubandtoenhancetheexperienceandenjoymentofourmembersastheycommittedtheirvaluabletimetokeepthemembersofthepublicsafeonoursectionofthecoastline,andorworkbehindthescenesintheadministrationofthemanyclubactivities.Leadershipinavolunteerorganisationischallenging.AsthenewCIubPresident,IhadtoquicklylearnourConstitution,By-lawsandSLSApolicyandstillseekadviceonmanyoccasions.IbelievethatourConstitutionhasserveduswellinthepastasasmallclubhowevertherearemanyareaswhereourConstitutionandBy-lawsneedsupdatingtoaccommodateourfutureasaleadingandprogressiveclubwithinourBranch.TherearemanypeopleIwouldliketothank.FirstofallIwouldliketosincerelythankallourvolunteerlifesaversforalltheirtimeandeffortsoverthisseason.Whileearlierintheseasontherewaslimitedbeachtopatrol,Southycontinuedthegreatstatusof‘NoLivesLost’whilstourvolunteerswereonpatrol.AmassivethankyoutoourChiefTrainingOfficer,MattFordham.Matt’svaluesofincorporatingfunandsupportisadirectparallelwithwhatourClubisallabout.ThroughMatt’stime,dedicationandamazingeducationteam,SouthyhasbeenabletowelcometoSurfLifeSavingallournewBronzeandSRCs.OurtrainingcontinuesthroughthewinterwithIRBtraining,thankstoGrantShapcottandhisIRBtrainingteam.OurClubSecretary,MartinHayward,whohasbeenadedicatedsurflifesaverandSecretaryyearafteryear,ahugethankyouforyourongoingsupportthroughallthechallengesthisseason.

ThesensationalworkthatourNippersChairman,RichardDowling,hasdonethisyearhasresultedinawell-deservedaward‘ClubPersonoftheYear’.RichardhasbeenagreatassetontheCommittee.Hisdedicationandfocuswiththeyouthreallysetsasolidfutureforourclub.

Howardhasservedasclubcaptain,patrolcaptain,andvicepresidentofSouthNarrabeenandbeenaclubcoachofAvocaBeachsince1980.Hehasmentoredhundredsofkidsasacoachovertheyearswithmanygoingontoachievingoutstandingresultsduringtheircareers.

Hehasakeeninterestinlifesavingadministration,andhavingworkedasaprofessionallifeguardhasalwaysbeengenerouswithhisknowledgeofwatersafety.

ItgivesmegreatpleasuretopresentthefinancialstatementsofSouthNarrabeenSLSCfortheyearended30thApril2016.

Financial Summary

Theincomestatementshowsanetdeficitfortheyearofapproximately$49,878.

Thisissignificantlyimpactedbytherecognitionof$54,000ofdepreciationexpense,theincreaseprincipallyrelatingtothedepreciationoflastseason’sbuildingworks.Afurther$14,000forlossondisposalofassets(ClubCar,kioskequipmentandawning).

Onanormalisedcashbasis,thatexcludesdepreciationexpensebutincludesexpenditureonnewequipment,therewasnetsurplusofapproximately$14,000.Thisisdownonlastyearby$19,000whichismainlyduetoincomereceivedfortheKiosk.Whilstanettprofitof$14,000mayseemasatisfactoryresultweneedtobeconsciousthatittakesonaverage$115,000perannumtoruntheoperationsoftheclub,leavingnexttonothingtoinvestintheClub.

WithcostsrisingandincomedecreasingwecannotbecomplacentinmaintainingallsourcesofincomeespeciallywhenwehavesignedleasewithcouncilthatstipulateswehavetomaintaintheinternalandtosomeextenttheexternalmaintenanceoftheClub.

AddedtotheequationthereisadefiniteneedtoimprovetheOceanViewRoom,foyer,carpet,kitchenandbarfridges,addonanewtrainingfacilityandfurtherimprovethegrounds.Thisofgreatconcerntoallofus.Income Highlights

• Hallhirewasup10%onpreviousyearandcontinuestobetheclub’smajorsourceofincome.

• GolfDayinitsinauguralyearraised$3,274.SpecialthanksgoestoSarahandMattOaten.

• KioskincomeneverhappenedthisyearduetoalongandlengthydebatewithCouncilovertheintroductionof25%cafécomponentrentshouldtheclubsub-leasetoathirdparty.Theresultofwhichourprospectivetenantcouldnotabidebytheseterms.

Expenditure Highlights

• ThepurchaseoftheBRPCommanderATVincludingSLSPatrolkitfor$9,682.Thiswasourshareofthe$4$SLSNSWBRPGrant.

• FinalpaymentofCouncil’spenaltynoticewasmade.Totalofthefinewas$3,000.

• ConsultantsFeesof$7,800aremadeup-legalfeestoCouncilandsolicitor$1,850-legalfeestolawyersforsub-lease$2,425-draughtsmenfeeforS96submission$2,700-PCAandengineersfee$860

Lifesaving Report

FirstlyIwouldliketothankeveryonefortheencouragementandsupportthatwasgiventomeduringthe2015/16season.CongratulationstoeveryonefromallareasoftheclubonwhatwasanothersuccessfulseasonatSouthNarrabeen.Welcometoallthenewmembersforthisseason;wehopethatbeingpartoftheSouthNarrabeenSLSCiseverythingyouexpectedandmore.Thisseasonwasasuccessfuloneinmanyareas.Fromapatrollingaspectwehadamixtureofeventfuldaysandsomeslowones,butwewerefortunatethatoverallitwasasafeseason.

Intheinstructionalarea,MattFordhamandhisteamworkedextremelyhardthisseasontrainingournewBronzecertificateandSRCcertificateholdersthankyouforprovidingcountlesshourshelpingournewestmembers.

Wecontinuedtoseeanincreaseinnumbersinallthetrainingsquads.Iwouldstronglyencourageallofouractivememberstocontinuetogainlifesavingawardsafterobtaininglifesavingbronze.Themorequalifiedwearethebetterequippedwearetodealwithanysituationwemightbeconfrontedwithonthebeach.AspecialmentiontoourIRBtrainersthisseasonIdon’trecallseeingasmanycrewsgoingthruinoneseasonamazingefforttoallinvolved.Thankyoutoallthosememberswhorosetothechallengeandgainedfurtherawardsthroughouttheseason.

ThisyearwehadthepleasureofhostingtheBush2BeachprogramonceagainandIwouldliketothankallthosePatrollingmembersandmemberswhomassistedwiththerunningoftheeventanotherhugesuccessinregardstothisannualinitiative.AllmemberswearingtheRedandYellowquarteredcapsaretobecommendedonthelevelofcommitmentandprofessionalismtheydemonstratedonthebeachthroughouttheseason.SouthNarrabeenSLSCwaswellrepresentedatmostcarnivals.ThanksalsotofamiliesandfriendsfortheirsupportaroundtheClub.Iwouldalsoliketoextendmysincerethankstoeveryonewhovolunteeredtheirtimeinanycapacitythisseason.ForourPatrollingmemberstheawareness,preventionshardworkanddedicationkeeptheSouthNarrabeenbannerheldinhighregardthroughouttheSurflifesavingfraternity.Weareallvolunteersandattheendofthedaywithoutyourhelpwewouldn’tbetheclubwearetoday.Seeyouonthesandin2016/17.

Surf Sports Report

Winterisadauntingtimeforanysurfcompetitor,withtheuncertaintyoftheseasonahead,andwehereatSouthNarrabeenarenoexception.Thecoldmonthsofffromcompetitionallowsreflectionfromthepreviousseason’sachievements,andplanningofworktocome.Itisatimewhenattitudesandpersonalitiesclash,wheretiesarecutandbondsarebroken.Itisalsothetimewhencrewsbegintoform,andthesmellofcompetitionstirs.Inthegym,onthebeach,inthestreets,hardworkanddetermination,meanforsomethechancetocompeteundertheorangecapforyetanotherseason,beitonaboardorintheboat,layingthefoundationsforthenext8months.

ThisseasonsawthereturnofthetwoU23crewsfromlastseason:TheSpeedDealers(U23Men)andTheSliders(U23Women)aswellasasurpriselateappearancefromTheSharks(Reserves).Afteragreatseasonlastyear,bothunder23crewshadexpectationstomeet,andresultstobest,bothofwhichweredoneinanexceptionalmanner.TheSharks,consistingofrowingalumni,onlyformingmid-season,knewtherewashardworktobedone,andwerenottobeoutdone,alsoputtinginastellarseason.

Backtosweepthisseason,MickHavenreturnedtothelongoarforthetwoU23crews,aswellasJohnnyClark,whosteppedupagaintotakeonthereservescrew.Itwasgreattoseetheboysworktogether,learningfromandmentoringoneanotherthroughouttheyearasgoodsweepsdo.Thisseasonasmanyprior,broughtwithitafairshareofhurdlesandchallenges,butnothingeithercouldn’thandle.IthinkIspeakforalltherowerswhenIgivethanksforyourcommitmentagainthisseasongentlemen,yourhardworkcertainlydoesnotgounnoticed.Trainingintherain,beforework,inthedark,inthegym,orcommutingfromothersideofSydneyorbeyondjusttomakeitintime,thankyou.

Asalways,thisseasonwasjampackedfullofrowingevents,someoldfavourites,aswellassomenewexperiencesforsome,includingbutnotlimitedto:SNBBranchCarnivalsatNewport,WarriewoodandNorthCurly,ASRLeventsat

bothManlyandShellharbour,CoffsHarbourOpenCraftCarnival,PacificPalmsBattleOftheBoats,championshipsforbranch(PalmBeach)andState(Umina),InternationalYoungGunsatCollaroy,OceanThunderatDeeWhy(4Rounds)andofcourse,AussiesatAlexandraHeadlands.

Thesurfasalwaysthisyearwascompletelyunpredictableandtestedoursweepsandcrewstimeandtimeagain.Unfortunatelyitdidgetthebetterofusattimes,butwhatseasonwouldn’tbecompletewithoutafewinjuriesandhiccupsalongtheway.Thesedroveushardertoperformandwegottoseeyetagainsomeofhefinestsweepingaroundwithsomestunningsurfworkfromcrewandsweepalike,aswellasinthelakeatPacificPalms.

Theclub’scompetitionnightheldonMay21st,wasachanceformetoshowmyappreciationinfullforourcompetitorsthisseason,andforcelebrationformallyfortheyearthathasbeen,whileIwashumbledbytheboatrowerstobeawardedrower’srower,itwassomeofourmoreseniorrowersthatpickeduptheprestigiousawardsthisyear:

TheSliderstrulyareaninspirationalcrewbothonandoffthebeach.Thisseasonsawthegirlssidelinedsomewhatduetoinjury,butthatdidnotstoptheirpassionforthesportortheirdedicationtotheirteam.Everyweekendsawthemunderthetentandhelpingwithboats,andrunning,rowingandtraininghardereachandeveryweekandIpersonallycanattesttothis.

Learningtosweepthisyearwasmadeapleasurebythegirls,whoIsweptonceaweekfor46


morningsessionsinthelake,anditwascleartomethatalltheirhardworkwaspayingoff,despitetheseminorsetbacks.Thisisnottosaythough,thattheydidn’tmakethemostoftheirtimecompetingontheweekends.Inthecarnivalstheyattended,thegirlssurprisedthemselveswithsomefabulousresultsandtheirhardworkreallydidshow,excellentseasongirls,veryproud.Unfortunatelythegirlsdidnotgetthechancetorowatthebranchchampionships,butmadethetop8attheStatetitles,excellentachievement!

Mycrew.AbunchofyoungladswhomIspendmoretimewiththanmyownfamilyfor8months.Thisseasonasperusualhaditsshareofupsanddowns,butwemanagedtopullthroughandreallyachievethisseason,despitesomeresultsnotgoingquitehowwehadhoped.Trainingwastoughthisyear,alongseasonhalfwayintoAprilsawfatiguesetinonmorethanoneoccasion,butagainabandingtogethersawusreallyshineintheend.WewerealsoincrediblyhumbledtohaveenteredtheOceanThunderthisseason.

AsacoltscrewthisisfarandawayandexceptionalperformanceandIthinkwerosetothechallengeaccordingly,andhopefullyreturntotheseriesnextyear,tobetterourperformance.Wecouldnothavedonethisthough,withouthelpfromoursponsorsAptusAccounting,MSInteriors,VibeElectricalandDreamDoors,allintegraltothecampaignwiththeirgeneroussponsorship.Wemanagedtogoldatthisyear’sinauguralshortcourseASRLeventatManly,andwerethrilledtomaketop12attheAustraliantitles

inApril,aswellasconsistenttop6finishes,andanoverall17thoutof28crewsattheOceanThunder.Veryimpressedboysbringonnextseason.

ThepinnacleofrowinghereatSouthNarrabeen.ThisseasonsawatriumphantreturntotheorangeandbrownfromoneofouralumniDaveFrewfromQueenscliff.Theboysreallymadetheirpresenceonthebeachknownthisyear.HavingonlyformedofficiallyatChristmas,theboysdidnotdelaygettingstuckintotrainingandcompeting,withseveralmedalstotheirnameattestingtothis.Thesharkshadafewforaysthisyearintothemastersdivision,whichisgreatforboththeclubandthesport,andindoingsoearnedthemselvessomegoldmedals.Afewoftheboysrowedonandofflastseason,butwasgreattoseethemreturnforthemostpartofthisyearsolidandconsistent.Theboyspickedupgoldatbothstateandbranchchampionshipsinthemasters120YearsDivision,withmultiplecameosfromrowingveteranStuartHaven.Hopefullywewillseetheboysnextseasonandseewhatmoretheyhaveinstoreforus.

WhilesomeofushereatSouthyHitthewaterwithanoar,thereareaselectfewwhotakeprideinrepresentingthisclubontheirsurfboards.Unfortunately,thesurfingseasontakesabitlongerthantheusualsurfsportsseason,withthebranchonlyhavingbeenheldthusfar,butwiththeresultstodate,theupcomingstatetitleswillhopefullybeanothermedalchancefortheboys.Andytrulyisaninspirationalcompetitor,notonlybeingpresidentofthissurfcub,butalsomanagingtopickupagoldmedalinthelongboardsatthisyearsbranch,withNigelcollectingsilverintheshortboards.Averywelldonetoboththeboys,terrificresultandgoodluckatStateandAussies! 47

Acompetitionwrapupfromthisseasonwouldn’tbecompletewithoutmentioningthisyoungman.At32yearsofage,notonlyhasStubeeninstrumentalintheboatsectionthisyear,buthasalsohadhisfirsttasteofthebeacheventsatanationallevel.StuartsteppeduptotheoccasionandcompetedforSouthNarrabeeninflagsatthisyearsAustralianTitles.Whilehemadeitthroughafewrounds,anunfortunatetripendedhiscampaignearly,butindoingsohasinspiredotherstotakeupsimilareventsnextyear,welldoneStu,ourfirstbeachcompetitorinaverymanyyears.

SouthNarrabeenNippersagainhadagoodyearwithalotoffunhadbyallonthesandandinthewater.Ournumbersweresteadyandinlinewithpreviousyears.YearonYearwecontinuetoseeourJuniorandCadetsgrow.OurstrongandgrowingSRCsgrouprepresentthenextgenerationofSouthNarrabeenlifesavers.Itisalsoverypleasingtoseeanumberofnewnipperfamilies.AsoutlinedinthepreviousAGMreport,thenipper’scommitteeestablishedanumberofkeyobjectivesforthecurrentandfutureseasons(2-3yearvision).Thesewereto:• ContinuetoGrowthenipperCommunity,• BuildonthesuccessoftheSRC/Cadet

programsestablishedinpreviousyears,• ContinuethefocusonWaterbasedactivities

andskills,• SurfandBeachEducation,• Encouragemoreparentinvolvement,and• HaveaheapoffunwithourKids!Inkeepingwithourobjectivetohaveheapsoffun,wecontinuedonwithourannualsocialevents,includingtheChristmasParties.Andthefinalnippersoftheyeartheannualmuckupdayandparentevents.Nippersranverysmoothlythisyear,duetothehardworkofthenippersparents.Wehadagemanagersinmostoftheagegroups,andwhenrequiredparentswillingtostepupwithminimumfuss.Thekeyforuswasthatalargenumberofpeopledidtheirbit,whichmadeitenjoyableforall.

InparticularIwouldlikecalloutourNipperParentoftheyear,WayneNolan.Hisenergyanddrivetogetaroundallwateractivitiesprovidedmanyofournipperswithopportunitytofurtherenhanceandrefinetheirskills,whetheritbeontheboardorswimminginthesurf.

ASundaymorningonthebeachjustwouldn’tbecompletewithoutaBBQ’dbaconandeggroll.NotonlyprovidingavaluableservicetohungryNippers,theproceedsoftheNippersKioskgobackintohelptheclubprovidetherequirenippersequipmentandupkeep.

Allthiswouldnothavebeenpossible,withoutthemotivationanddedicationofKarenShapcott.IwouldalsoliketoextendmythankstoourNipperParent’softheyearMelanieandBradMortonfortherunningoftheBBQeachandeveryweek.Asoutlinedabove,thesuccessofNippersisdependentonthehelpofmany.WithanumberoftheNippersfamiliesnowhavingtheirchildrenmovemoreintheearlystagesofsurflifesaving(i.eSRCandBronze)weneedtorebuildtheteamofNippervolunteersandhelpersforthe2016/17season.Ilookforwardtothecomingseason,tobuilduponour2015/16successes.

Thisyearhasbeenoneoftidyingup,repairsandmaintenance,submission’sS96withCouncil,installations,saleofassetsandworkingwithDaveHauserourWorkHealthandSafetyOfficer.

• TidyingUp–WiththecompletionoftheStoreroomCouncilwascontactedinordertogetsignoffandsignoffforSLSNSWgrantprocess.FinalpaymentoftheGrantrequiresthisbeforewegetpaid.

• RepairsandMaintenance–AfterseveralyearsofringingCouncilaboutroofleaks,thisyearturnedouttobeasuccess,IcannowsaythatwenolongerhaveadelugeofwaterdrippingontotheparquetryfloorintheOceanViewRoom.

• S96Submission–tofurtherimproveandmakethekiosk/cafébemoreefficientwesubmittedanS96withCounciltoinstallandnewkitchen,exhaustfan,afixedweatherproofawning,walkthroughaccessandsupplyofgas.Completionofworksweanticipatewillbereadyforthenextseason.

• SaleofAssets–hasbeenalongandlengthyprocesswithlittlereturn.Ihonestlybelievethatitwouldbeeasiertosellyourmother.

• WorkHealthandSafety–AsmentionedIhavebeenworkingwithDaveHauseroninternalandexternalissues.So,ifyouseesomenewsignsaboutyou’llknowwe’vebeenthere.Oneofthemainproblemsthatwehaveiswiththerear(easternsideoftheClub)externalstaircase.AsperourleasethisisaCouncilresponsibilityandhencewehavewrittentoCouncilexplainingtheneedforthestepstohavenon-sliptreads.Wearewaitingontheirreply.

NextyearweenvisageonsubmittinganewDAforatrainingroom,bringingtheoldkitchenintothe21stcenturyandsubmittinggrantapplicationsfortheliftwhichseemstohaveescapedCouncil’sattention.Add,anewlawnwhichhasbeenswallowedupbytheOcean,newcarpetfortheOceanViewRoomandthereyouhaveit.

IwouldliketothankCharlesLongleyforhisdedicationinperformingtherolesofFunctionCentreManagerandBarManager.CharleshasperformedbothrolesonavolunteerbasisthishasincreasedtheincomeoftheClubashehaddeclinedtoacceptawage.

TheclubcalledforexpressionsofinterestfortherolesofFunctionManageandbarManager.TheprospectivecandidateswereinterviewedforthepositionsandarecommendationwasmadetotheClubCommitteeandNicolePrestinenziacceptedtheroleofFunctionManager.AtthetimeofwritingwearewaitingonareplyfromthepersonthattheroleofBarManagerwasofferedto.

ThetradingoftheOceanViewRoomhasbeengoodwithoutgeneratingmajormuchneededincome.TheFunctionCentreisbadlyinneedofanupgradeespeciallythekitchen,theentrancefoyerandanawningoverthebalcony.

AtthefinishoflastsummertheKioskshut.YourcommitteemadethedecisiontohaveakitchenfittedtotheKiosk.ThisdecisionwasmadetoimprovetheKiosk,reducethecostsandtakethepressureofftheOceanViewRoomKitchen.

TheclubmetwithWarringahCouncilwhograntedpermissiontosub-leasetheKiosktoanoperator.TheclubcalledforexpressionsofinterestandthreeprospectiveoperatorswereinterviewedandSeanClearywasrecommendedtothecommitteewhoadoptedtherecommendations.SeanalsohasacoffeecartoperatingSaturdayandSundaymornings,evenduringwinter.Comedownandintroduceyourself,greatcoffees.

SeanispresentlyfittingoutthekitchenintheKiosk.Hewillbeupandrunningforsummer.

Wearelookingforwardtoamuchneededincreaseincomenextseason.

TheBeachtoBushisanationalprogramthatseesgroupsoftwotothreepeopleheadwesttoedu-cateschoolchildrenaboutsurfsafetyandwhattodowhenvisitingthebeach.ThisyearAndyCrossandAngieThorpewereselectedtoparticipateinthisprogram.

InNovembertheyheadednorthwesttoTamworthandvisited10schoolsinthesurroundingarea,talkingtoover1700schoolchildrenfromkindythroughtoYear12.Itwasaveryrewardingtripwithlotsofzinc,colourandsmiles.

Thong Throwing

AustraliaDaywasanotheropportunitytoraisemoneyfortheclub.Thenipperparentsgotinvolvedtoprovide‘ThongThrowing’atthelocalAustraliaDayactivities.Agreatdayhadbyallwiththefurthestthongtobethrownwas46m.Membershadlotsoffundodgingthethongsthrownandreturningthethongstobase.

Bush to Beach

Thisyeartheclubagainsuccessfullyheldits11thconsecutiveprogramthatinvolved40AboriginalchildrenfromtheoutbacktownofBrewarrinatotheclubtolearnnewskills,experiencecitylife,andmeetnewfriendsandtoobservevolunteerlifesaversinaction.Thisgroupofchildrenwereanewbunchwhocomprisedbothboysandgirlsandwereselectedtoattendtheprogramasarewardforimprovedschoolattendancefortheyear.

TheBushtoBeachcommitteecomprisingofPeterMadden(LifeMember)Ken&DiPassmore,KimBrown,CalSmyth,JackCannonsAM,BrettPicknell(LifeMember)&ChrisWhitedidanoutstandingjobinplanningandorganizingtheprogram.Theprogramwouldnothavebeenasuccesswithoutthetremendoussupportofclubmembers,manycommunitymembers,membersfromCollaroyandQueenscliffSLSCclubs,sponsors,MichaelRegan(WarringahCouncil,BradHazzardMP,BronwynBishop,stafffromBrewarrinaShireandtheElderswhoaccompaniedthegroupontheprogram.

TheclubsCommitteegotbehindtheprogramwithgustoandspecialmentiontoAndyCross,MattFordhamandShannonHitchenforworkingtirelesslyovertheweekendtoensurethatsafetywasparamount,thechildrenlearntCPR/firstaidandwerewellsupervisedinalloftheiractivities.

TheBushtoBeachisnotaclubeventbutacommunityeventandeverybitofassistanceofferedbyindividualsandorganisationsisgenuinelyappreciated.OnemotherofaBrewarrinachildwrotetomeandsaid“ThisprogramhashelpedboostKeira’sconfidenceandsocialisationskillsasshedoesn’tgettomixwithotherchildrenoftensincewelivesofaroutoftown”.

Itisbecominghardereachyeartofundtheprogramduetorisingcostsofthe50seaterbus,food,organizedactivitiesattheNarrabeenSportsAcademy,InsuranceofthechildrenandIamunsurehowlongtheprogramcanrun.Fundingfortheprogramcomesfromthecombinedeffortofthesub-committeeandnosurfclubfundsareused.AllworkersinvolvedareVolunteersandfrommyresearchisoneofthelargestvoluntarylifesavingprogramsinNSWwherechildren40childrenand8Eldersaretransportedfromtheremoteareasoftheoutbacktothebeach.

ThisyearwewereablyassistedinthebackgroundbyChrisandJennyBlake(bothretiredschoolteachers)fromMudgeewhocameonboardtoassistandhavejustrecentlyreturnedfromanoutbacktriptoBrewarrinatocatchupwithvariousHeadmistressesatlocalschools.

Wewerealsofortunatetoreceiveassistancefrom8studentsfromtheRuralHealthDoctors(ROUNDS)andtheyassistedMattFordhaminteachingthechildrenCPR/firstaidandwhenthestudentsfinishtheirtrainingtheywillallocatedmedicalpositionsinvariousruraltowns.

Social Nights

New Years EveAfunwaytoseeintheNewYearwithgoodfriends.ItwasgreattoseesomanyclubmembersenjoyingacasualBBQbeforewalkingdowntoLongReefheadlandtowatchthefireworks.

Nachos NightThiswasthefirstofaprogramofmonthlysocialnightsdesignedtoengagemembersandthelocalcommunityinafunandsocialenvironment.Theturnoutforourfirsteventwasterrificandresultedinasellout.Eventhoughthiswasnotafundraiser,aprofitof$300wasmade.

Burger and Beer NightFollowingonfromthesuccessoftheNachosnight,ouramazingchef,ChrisBlatchford,suggestedaBurgerandBeerNight.ThisincludedlivemusicandpromotionintheManlyDaily.Itwasgreattoseesomanynewfacesfromthelocalcommunitycomingdownandgettinginvolved.Theburgerswereamazingandthebeercold.Thisnightandtheburgersatnippersthenextmorning,raisedover$1,000fortheclub.
