Any time of the year was suitable for ex- ploration but the depths of winter or the heights of summer held equal attractions. Many of the pits, ponds and lakes scat- tered around the open spaces were man- made. Some served to drain the land, others grew by accident but all had a certain mag- ic. Two of my early memories feature two stretches of water in Childwall Valley and Calderstones Park. A big pond off Barnham Drive was used as a playground by local children. Father had also known it in the 1920s. An island stood in the middle and some boys made a raft to get to their den. Hard win- ters saw the pond freeze. It was filled in long ago but you can still see an outline where the ground is boggy. An equally fasci- nating place to me was a group of ponds set among mounds of earth in Calderstones. There were stickle- backs and water bee- tles in the clear water – the beetles were easy to scoop up and ex- amine. Later this area was landscaped with a bridge and pretty flower beds but it did not have the same sense of the unknown. Calderstones Park lake was created in 1933 by workers em- ployed during the eco- nomic depression which saw many out of work. A much older lake is in Greenbank Park – a big house once overlooked its calm waters when it was a private estate. A series of ponds called Forty Pits lay off Allerton Road, north of Booker Avenue. The pits filled up after marl – a clay-like rock – was excavated to fertilize crops. This was a pop- ular beauty spot. Princes Park is pic- tured on an Edwardian postcard showing the area around the lake kept private for the ex- clusive use of local residents. The outer areas were for the gen- eral public. A gentleman strolls towards a bridge that once led to the island. Today the scene is very different with this part of the lake virtually dry and filled with trees and shrubs sprouting from the mud. A particular favourite of mine in re- cently-refurbished Sefton Park is a pond next to the grotto where water makes its way gently to the lake. • Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

Emma Boylan was3 1 w h e n h e rbeloved Father,J o h n B o y l a n ,passed away afterbeing diagnosedwith a brain tu-mour in 2011.
Since then, Emmahas been a great sup-porter of the MarieCurie Hospice inWoolton where herDad was cared for.Taking part in an over-
seas trek through theBrazilian rainforest in2012 and helping withGreat Daffodil Appealcollections in 2013,Emma has raised in ex-cess of £4,000! Here’sEmma’s story:
“When Dad wasdiagnosed with cancer,it was heart breakingto take him from hos-pital to hospital, andhear him ask mostnights if he could gohome. It was only
when he was admittedto the Marie CurieHospice in Wooltonthat he didn’t ask to betaken home. He hadhis own room with aTV and space for hisown personal items. He felt at home. It wasa place where his fam-ily could drop in andstay with him forhours. He felt com-fortable.
The most comfort-ing thing about the
Emma supportsGreat Daffodil
Appeal in memory ofher beloved Father
Marie Curie Hospicewas the warm, friend-ly welcome that we allreceived from the doc-tors and nurses, whowere so good to us all. They kept us up to dateon a regular basis giv-ing that special per-sonal touch. They werealways on hand withsupport, advice, a cupof tea and an extrahelping of dessert forour food loving Father! The staff at the hospicehad genuine sympa-
thy and helped us copewhen the time came todeal with our belovedFather’s passing. Forall of those things, wewill be truly and for-ever grateful.
We do our best togive back in any waythat we can. Last year,I took part in the GreatDaffodil Appeal, andthis year, I will be don-ning my yellow tabardand mad hatter hat todo it all again! It’s aneasy way to support
Marie Curie, by just sparing a cou-ple of hours of your time, you canmake a real difference to local peo-ple with a terminal illness. I gotmy friends and family together tocollect in the City Centre, but thereare lots of collections acrossMerseyside for people to get in-
volved with, and I would encour-age everyone to spare an hour ortwo this March to help more ter-minally ill people in Merseyside”.

At The Chiropractic Clinic we are
a lways looking to improve our
treatment and options for you. We
b e l i e v e t h a t a d d i n g e x p e r t
physiotherapy to our remit is a great
way to do this.
It is extremely rare to have the
opportunity to consult with such
experienced practitioners in private
practice and we are delighted to
provide this service. Also from
working previously with Leigh we
k n o w t h a t p h y s i o t h e r a p y a n d
chiropractic compliment one another
to provide the best overall options for
the patient. This is the key positive
for us.
Chiropractic and physiotherapy are
sometimes seen as professions that
don’t get along. Here at The
Chiropractic Clinic we are dedicated
to changing stereotypes and working
together to provide the best possible
care for you.
At The Chiropractic Clinic in Garston we
are delighted to announce that Leigh
Halfteck, physiotherapist at British
Athletics will begin consultancy work at
the clinic as of February 2014.
Leigh is a great addition to the clinic
team and brings a wealth of experience.
Leigh has been working in professional
sport for 6 years. He works full time for
British Athletics (the performance arm of
UK Athletics); prior to that he worked for
the English Institute of Sport with the GB
Taekwondo Squad, for the 4 years leading
up to and including the London 2012
Olympic Games.
However, treatment is not just for
sport ing individuals and athletes,
everyone can expect to receive the
same high level of treatment that is
given the professional athletes Leigh
treats.
Leigh has a specialist interest in visceral
treatment. Visceral treatment involves
addressing movement and restriction
dysfunction within the abdominal organs.
This is assessed with specific palpation
on the surface of the abdomen. These
issues can often be associated with low
back and pelvic pain.
Leigh has many commitments with
Athletics camps and competitions and
therefore his clinical time will be limited to
accommodate this. For more information
or to book an appointment, call the clinic

• How is this beliefpathetic and absurd?
• Was this person Ilearned this belieffrom worth model-ling in this area?
• What will it ulti-mately cost me emo-tionally if I don’t letgo of this belief?
• What will it ulti-mately cost me inmy relationship if Idon’t let go of this be-lief?
• What will it cost mephysically?
• What will it cost mefinancially?Once you have an-

It’s tempting to be-lieve that Mother’sDay was the in-vention of greet-ings card manu-facturers orfloristsbut, like so manyother customs, itcan be traced to theancient Greeks, who held an annu-al Spring festivalto Rhea, the moth-er of the gods.
T h e R o m a n scopied the idea withofferings to Cybele,who was also a moth-er of deities. EarlyChristians embracedthe idea by dedicat-ing the fourth Sundayin Lent to Mary themother of Christ and,as time went by, theEnglish extended theidea to include allmothers in what be-c a m e k n o w n a s“Mothering Sunday”.
From the early 16thcentury, families cel-ebrated with servantsbeing allowed hometo visit their mothers, and even a specialcake baked to markthe day.
