“I am extremely proud to have been re-elected as The Leader of a council which is increasingly different to the vast majority of councils in this country.

Over recent years we have made profound and lasting changes to the way we think and operate. Now, as a result of strong and decisive leadership, we are in an excellent position to deliver our priorities – and meet the challenges ahead.

Progress has already been made by streamlining and reinvigorating the way we work by reforming the council to improve the way decisions are made and scrutinised.

Growing the economy is, and always will be, our number one priority, and it has been put at the heart of what we do. Attracting investment into South Kesteven is key to driving the local economy but we also need to support the many businesses who are already well established in our district.

Great strides have been made by InvestSK, SKDC’s economic growth and regeneration company, which is transforming the way we do business with the private sector

and I believe this partnership will continue to flourish going forward.

We are also much more pro-active in the way we promote South Kesteven to potential investors and would-be employers looking to re-locate to the area, and visitors interested in exploring all that our beautiful district has to offer.

Making sure South Kesteven is clean and attractive is key for the council and one of the main reasons why we set – and kept – a new, higher standard for the cleanliness of our streets. This is something we are hugely proud of and I know our residents share this pride.

Three months ago we launched a new company called EnvironmentSK which brought all council grounds maintenance in-house. It has got off to a flying start with praise pouring in from across the district for the high standard of work.

And there’s even more good news on the environment front. I am delighted to say that our 12-month food waste recycling trial across the

district has been a huge success and will continue for the coming year.

To achieve and change it is essential that the council has an opportunity to influence policy. That is why The Deputy Leader, Councillor Kelham Cooke, and I ensure that SKDC is represented on the political stage at national, regional and local level.

I can honestly say South Kesteven District Council is starting to deliver on its promises and is in the shape it needs to be going forward.

We have set out on a positive, ambitious and exciting course; a course that will lead us to delivering better services for our residents and achieving financial independence by thinking and acting more commercially.

I for one can’t wait. If you have any comments or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or a member of my Cabinet.”

Delivery and the challenges aheadThe recently re-elected Leader of South Kesteven District Council, Councillor Matthew Lee, talks to SKtoday about priorities, actions and his plans to deliver services in a different way.

South Kesteven District Council’s pioneering food waste collection

trial is to continue into 2020 following a hugely successful first 12 months.

The trial is being hailed a resounding success with over 300 tonnes of food waste recycled in less than a year.

SKDC has now written to the 4,000 homes within the trial area to find out what they think about the recycling food waste trial.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Dr Peter Moseley, said: “I’m delighted to say that since we launched last summer the public has really got behind this initiative with more than 85% recycling their thrown-away food.

“We’re thrilled to see people take up a greener way to dispose of their food waste, and we can build on this together by reducing the overall amount of waste we create in the

first place.“SKDC is laying strong

foundations for the future, especially in areas like this which are at the heart of the community. This was a first for Lincolnshire. We are now encouraging residents who took part in the trial to complete and return the survey.”

Feedback will help decide what happens in other parts of South Kesteven and across the county as the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership aims for the best value for money across the waste service.

Electricity generated from food waste collected over the year could boil over a million kettles – brewing some six million cuppas.

Cllr George Chivers has been looking back over a memorable

year as SKDC Chairman attending official events and raising lots of money for charity.

The Grantham Belmont councillor said: “I’ve done nearly 100 events and my wife Nessa and I have both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Money raised for the Chairman’s charities, the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and Royal Air Forces Association, has topped £1,700.

Retiring Chairman

Cllr Jacky Smith is looking forward to bringing her

considerable business experience to her new role as Chairman of South Kesteven District Council.

Cllr Smith’s professional background includes working abroad in the oil and gas industry for a number of years before returning to England to help small businesses to start-up and grow. She was also actively involved in property development in Grantham and Stamford.

Cllr Smith is keen to continue her work on the council’s skills agenda, building on her work with Lincoln University to establish a higher education base in the new building in Grantham that will also house the five-screen Savoy Cinema, a project Cllr Smith oversaw during her most recent term representing the residents of St Wulfram’s ward, a seat she has held since 2011.

Cllr Smith said: “I am determined to use my year as Chairman of South Kesteven District Council to be a voice for business, skills and progress.”

South Kesteven District Council is investing £30m over the next five

years to provide more than 280 homes for local people on the housing register.

The modern, affordable homes form part of SKDC’s commitment to deliver good quality social housing across the district.

The properties will be of mixed development including family homes, more housing for elderly people and specific accommodation for single persons.

The first phase of 35 properties has been allocated £6.5m and includes four innovative ready-made houses for Grantham which will be built away from the town centre and delivered this summer.

Further projects in Bourne, Stamford and Grantham are in the pipeline, subject to planning permission.

Councillor Barry Dobson, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Everyone deserves a safe, secure and affordable place to live, and social housing has a major role to play in

achieving this. “Here in South Kesteven there is

a need for more affordable housing and a shortage of supply. These new sites give us the ideal opportunity to increase our stock of social housing for the people who really need them, as well as improving the appearance of each area involved.”

Planning permission was granted in March for the ready-made modular homes on Earlesfield Lane in Grantham. They allow wide choice on design and build, are energy-efficient, minimise carbon emissions and are fully accessible.

Planning permission is being sought for ten flats at Kinoulton Court in Grantham, a further seven flats on Meadow Close, Bourne and five bungalows in Stamford.

A series of public hearings has been held to look at

South Kesteven's Local Plan which maps out future housing and economic development in the district.

The Leader of SKDC, Councillor Matthew Lee, said it is one of the council's most important documents.

Councillor Lee was the first speaker at hearings held throughout May by a Government-appointed independent planning inspector into the plan that sets out the framework for housing and economic growth until 2036.

All councils produce Local Plans to comply with the National Planning Policy Framework. They play a vital role in encouraging the right mix of housing development and supporting growth of the local economy.

In South Kesteven there

Home buyers are being offered a helping hand

on to the property ladder by South Kesteven District Council.

Four homes in the heart of Bourne are available to buy at a discounted rate as part of a low-cost ownership scheme.

They are part of a £3m development by SKDC’s commercial company, Gravitas Housing Ltd, providing 22 two-bedroom apartments and five three-bedroom townhouses on land at Wherry’s Lane.

As part of the planning agreement, Gravitas included four Discounted Market Sales (DMS) homes. DMS new-build properties are sold with discounts of around 20%.

SKDC Deputy Leader, Councillor Kelham Cooke, said: “This development is another example of the

projects we are bringing forward to enhance South Kesteven’s reputation as a great place to live, work and invest.”

More information and details of the qualifying criteria for the DMS homes in Wherry’s Lane are available from Rosedale Property Agents on 01778 420011 or Gravitas Housing’s development team on 01476 406256.

has been extensive public consultation.

The required level of housing provision is assessed by the Government and has been set at a minimum of 625 new homes in South Kesteven per year up to 2036. In that time the population of the district is estimated to increase from around 140,000 to 161,000.

Councillor Lee said: “We are keen to encourage an appropriate mix and form of housing to meet the needs of current and future households in the district.

“The plan includes policies to address the chronic shortage of social and affordable housing in our district.”

It will not be adopted until the planning inspector has agreed any modifications and given his final approval.

T ickets are on sale and the website is now live for an

unmissable Stamford Georgian Festival this September offering four days of colourful performance, events and spectacle.

This year’s festival (26-29 September), organised by South Kesteven District Council, celebrates the ‘Age of Wonder and Invention’, bringing to life Georgian England’s remarkable period of discovery and innovation.

The 2019 festival programme is inspired by some truly captivating stories of Stamford’s past including tethered hot-air balloon rides on the Meadows echoing a pioneering ascent from Stamford gas works in 1825 by the celebrated balloonist Charles Green.

A visit from the period’s greatest tragedienne, Sarah Siddons, and her appearance at Stamford Theatre in 1779, has inspired a specially commissioned festival play with ‘Mrs Siddons’ Dressing Room’.

The Leader of SKDC, Councillor Matthew Lee, said: “Our cultural offer is built on quality, supporting an exciting, varied and accessible programme of events through the year.

“Stamford Georgian Festival offers a wonderful example of this work, and we can look forward to an amazing programme bringing together professional artists,

community groups, venues and residents to celebrate the rich heritage of the town and its people.”

This year’s festival will also celebrate the impressive legacy of Georgian arts and architecture, exploring the role the town and its residents played in shaping local history.

Entertainment on the picturesque Meadows will combine with fascinating talks and events in venues across town and at the Arts Centre. Street markets, re-enactors, a costumed ball and, for the first time, a costumed Sunday ‘Promenade’, promise a festival to remember.

There’s also a free Saturday evening event where crowds will fill the streets for a town centre spectacular featuring community participation and street performers creating a wonderful outdoor arts experience for all the family.

Audi Peterborough is welcomed as the main festival sponsor, adding to partner contributions from across the town.

SKDC’s last Georgian Festival in 2017 attracted over 56,000 visitors to Stamford. It’s seen as a key part of the district’s cultural offer and a vital part of making South Kesteven a great place to live, work and visit.

It will, once again, highlight the importance of Stamford as England’s ‘finest stone town’.

Factory buildings that were alive with the sounds of hundreds

of workers at the cutting edge of mechanical engineering for more than 100 years now stand eerily silent.

But it’s far from the end of the story for the former Cummins premises in Stamford, which have a proud history as one of the town’s major employment centres.

A bright future now beckons for the site in Barnack Road and master-planners are being appointed to redesign it for the 21st Century.

SKDC is working with Burghley Estates on ambitious plans to provide a high-quality development, that supports economic growth by providing jobs and housing to meet community needs.

The Leader of SKDC, Councillor Matthew Lee, said: “Once Cummins decided to leave Barnack Road we moved quickly to open discussions regarding our purchase of the site. This was critical to prevent the loss of employment land solely to housing development.

“The acquisition means we can provide businesses with expansion and growth opportunities in a high quality development that meets their needs, whilst still doing justice to Stamford.

“We are working closely with Burghley and our joint aim is to ensure that the future of both sites, now known as St Martin's Park, will continue to provide local employment opportunities.”

The former Cummins site, where generations of the same families have worked over the years, holds special memories for many.

It was first developed in 1904

when Cutting Brothers established its electrical and mechanical engineering business.

Local historian Philippa Massey, who has strong family connections to the company, is an expert on the site’s history.

She said Cutting Brothers employed about 300 people during its heyday. In 1934 the family business was sold to Collins Electrical Ltd of London and was renamed Stamford Electrical. The firm went into receivership in 1948 and in 1950 was bought by Northern Electric Wireless and General Engineering – Newage.

The company later underwent many takeovers and name changes and most recently was known as Cummins Generator Technologies.

Philippa said: “Since 1904 the site has been dedicated to electrical engineering and the companies based there have been among Stamford’s biggest employers.

“Bringing it back into use would mean a lot to the town. An awful lot of people have worked there over the years and there will still be many who have memories of it.”

The site is surrounded by history. Behind it is the Syston to Peterborough rail line that opened in the 1840s, providing a freight and passenger link between Stamford and Peterborough.

The Stamford Union Workhouse was built on a neighbouring site in 1836. It was demolished after a new workhouse was built on Ryhall Road in 1902. An infirmary attached to the original workhouse remained and has been converted into residential use.

SKDC bought the former Cummins site earlier this year, to help meet housing need in the district and to support local sustainable and sensitive economic growth.

Bright future beckons for former factory site

The former Cummins factory site in Barnack Road, Stamford, has

been renamed St Martin’s Park.SKDC has invested £7.5 million

in the purchase of the 15-acre site and is working in partnership with Burghley Estates, which owns a neighbouring 20-acre field. Together they will form St Martin's Park.

The investment will enable SKDC to generate income which can be further invested for the benefit of residents. This commitment to the local economy very much looks to the future, offering opportunities for people who grow up in Stamford to live and work in the area.

Announcing the name change, SKDC’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Kelham Cooke, said: “I’m delighted to say that the area is now known as St Martin’s Park, taking in the historic south side of Stamford St Martin's.”

Prime development sites in South Kesteven were showcased to

more that 25,000 leading property and investment professionals from around the world at MIPIM earlier this year.

InvestSK, SKDC’s economic growth and regeneration company, was part of Team Lincolnshire at the flagship event to promote investment and growth opportunities.

Key sites included a 200-acre employment space off the A1 at Gonerby Moor near Grantham and 40 acres of mixed use developments in Stamford.

In addition to the exhibition and networking opportunities, Grantham was selected by Lincolnshire County Council to feature in a growth spotlight presentation on the Midlands’ main conference agenda.

Councillor Matthew Lee, Chairman of InvestSK and the Leader of South Kesteven District Council, delivered the presentation.

Cllr Lee said: “MIPIM is unlike any other property and real estate event with professionals, senior decision- makers and investors from all over the world attending to look for their next development opportunity.

“With so many live development sites available throughout South Kesteven, InvestSK exhibited at MIPIM to showcase the amazing opportunities the district offers to investors.

“To further the relationships made at the property expo and build on leads generated, InvestSK is working with Team Lincolnshire to host a follow-up event this summer.”

InvestSK takes South Kesteven to international property market

More than 80 delegates attended South Kesteven’s first Skills

Summit. Organised by InvestSK, the event

brought businesses and education providers together to discuss the shape of the district’s future skills agenda.

It was hosted at Belton Woods Hotel near Grantham, and attended by delegates from across South Kesteven. Former MP Neil Carmichael delivered an inspiring speech to encourage businesses and education providers to work together to grow a workforce fit for a changing economy.

Interactive sessions saw delegates roll up their sleeves and take part in a series of workshops to discuss the benefits and barriers of hiring apprentices, how to achieve business growth through workplace training and what courses businesses want to see delivered at the new university centre which is due to open in Grantham this year.

Councillor Matthew Lee, Chairman of InvestSK and the Leader of South Kesteven District Council, said: “South Kesteven has a bold ambition for economic growth. To grow our economy we need the right skills in our workforce, to meet business needs now and in the future.

“The only way we can achieve that is by engaging with local companies to understand their skills needs and

then working with education providers to bridge any gaps. This is the start of that important conversation and I’m grateful to all delegates who attended and contributed.”

Grants of more than £5,500 have been awarded by InvestSK to

support local creative artists, through funding made available by SKDC.

The first five awards have been made to individuals across South Kesteven covering activities from dance and music, to performance and the visual arts. Some of the recipients are only ten-years-old, showing the commitment and passion to arts and culture across the district.

Alex Cavan, a singer-songwriter from Grantham who has released two albums to date and is regularly featured on BBC Introducing in Lincolnshire, has received funding to enhance his recording and performance equipment, while Elisha Parker from Bourne, who has performed with the English Youth Ballet, has received support towards her tuition fees.

Cllr Kelham Cooke, SKDC's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business Transformation and Property, said: “What a privilege it has been to review the work of so many talented local artists. With applications covering all forms of the creative arts, it just shows how well-served South Kesteven is for upcoming talent.”

The Creative Artists’ Small Grants Fund is designed to help both individuals and groups enhance their skills, develop performance opportunities, invest in specialist equipment or promote their activities more effectively in the local area.

Applications for funding will re-open in summer 2019. For more details please contact InvestSK on 01476 406374

SKDC’s first weekly Saturday market in Market Deeping

attracted more than 2,000 shoppers – and left traders and visitors eager for more.

The new event forms part of SKDC’s commitment to provide a thriving street market in all four of the district’s towns to attract visitors and grow the local economy.

Traders enjoyed brisk business in glorious spring sunshine, while visitors shopped to a backdrop of entertainment for all the family, including music from the Stamford Stompers and an Easter Egg Hunt for children.

The street market is being held every Saturday in Market Deeping with food, gifts and produce on sale from 8.30am.

Cllr Helen Goral, Cabinet Member for Growth, said: “Traders, shoppers and visitors all had a great time at the launch. Street markets are hugely important to the local economy, adding to the character of the area. This new market will boost everyone’s shopping experience and add to the vibrant community.”

Market trader Steve Brown, of Brown Bread, said: “It exceeded our expectations, people responded really well to the market.”

Cinnamon coffee shop manager Kerry Pammenter said: “It’s just what the town needed. We had twice as many people for the launch as for a

normal Saturday. We were really busy – it was brilliant.”

Alison Ireland, at Cloudnine gift shop added: “It brought a lot of people to the High Street and that’s an exciting development. We saw lots of new faces in the shop which is really encouraging. We all need to work together now to ensure it continues.”

Shopper Emma Canham, from Market Deeping said: “It's really lovely to come down and see so many people in Deeping because we've got lots of shops on our busy High Street.

To see people actually out and using them is absolutely lovely.”

Deeping St James resident Keith Rogers added: “Its a fantastic event. It will bring people into the village ... it’s absolutely brilliant.”

Traders sold fruit and veg, cooked meats, cheese, bread and eggs, while green-fingered customers could browse plants, hanging baskets and garden materials. There was also a chance to sort through collectible LPs, fishing gear or choose from a selection of jams and pickles.

Bourne CiCLE festival organisers are looking for old bikes to paint

yellow and dress the route and Race-Makers to help as volunteers over the weekend of 31 Aug-1 Sept.

South Kesteven District Council wants to involve the community wherever possible in a weekend combining top class professional road cycle racing with events to appeal to all the family.

Cllr Helen Goral, Cabinet Member for Growth, said: “We really hope that people across the district will get involved and come to watch and enjoy this festival. We want to make this an annual event contributing to the visitor economy and festival diary in the Bourne area.”

Bourne’s Wellhead Park is the place to enjoy cycling-themed fun on both days, with BMX bike extravaganza, skateboarding, vintage cycling demonstrations, refreshments, stalls

A new exhibition ‘The Tip of the Spear; Grantham and D-Day’ at

Grantham Museum tells the forgotten tale of how American Pathfinder paratroopers were the first in the air for the D-Day airborne assault, placing signalling beacons to guide in the main assault force.

Late on June 5, 1944, troops and aircrew took off from Twyford Wood near Colsterworth, formerly RAF North Witham, on a top secret and highly dangerous pre-invasion strike.

The exhibition focuses on the story of Captain Frank Lillyman of the 101st Airborne Division, first of the 200-strong elite force to jump behind enemy lines in Normandy and commended for his leadership, bravery and devotion to duty.

The exhibition was funded by a grant from Heritage Alive! – part of InvestSK, the council's economic growth and regeneration company.

Grantham Museum is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am-4pm.

There’s extra entertainment for train travellers using Grantham station thanks to a TV screen in the ticket hall showing the Discover South

Kesteven promotional film. Last year 1.3m people used the station, so there are a million-plus reasons

for the Discover South Kesteven visitor economy team to be showcasing the district. The 2019 Visitor Guide is also being distributed at Grantham and other local stops, and supplies are going into the first class lounge at King's' Cross Station in London.

Accommodation providers in Grantham and Stamford still have

time to join the new Discover England ‘Explorer's Road’ project promoting visitor sites along a 350-mile stretch of the historic A1 between Hertfordshire and Berwick-on-Tweed.

Nine district businesses including stately homes, accommodation providers and visitor attractions have joined the scheme, promoted and financially supported by the Discover South Kesteven visitor economy team. A new web-site is being used by German travel agents with interest from America and China.

A new ‘Explore South Kesteven’ guide to attractions across the

district has been produced listing 28 things to see and do from castles to carriage rides and antiques to alpacas, and an easy to follow map showing locations. It promotes attractions large and small, including gardens, heritage sites, castles, crafts, antiques and niche shopping, plus carriage rides, narrowboat trips, sculpture trails and quad biking.

and entertainment. All details of the festival are online

at www.bourneciclefestival.com with routes and times for all four major cycling events taking place over the weekend – men’s and women’s Elite races, a time trial and an amateur riders’ Sportive.

Most of the UK’s professional teams have indicated an interest in participating and local cycling club, Bourne Wheelers, is managing the Saturday morning Sportive with a choice of three distances – 54 miles, 69 miles and 86 miles. The Sportive will follow some of the routes from the Elite women’s and men’s road races including a traffic-free circuit within the Grimsthorpe Estate.

Organisers are keen to hear from any prospective festival volunteers to help with marshalling and stewarding on the route. No experience is required – just common sense and

A spectacular Bridge art project and aerial display will transform

Grantham Market Place this September.

It’s the start of an Arts Council England-funded project co-ordinated by Coventry-based arts company Imagineer Productions working with SKDC and the arts team within InvestSK.

Last year’s Gravity Fields Festival invited young children and their families to the George Centre to join project engineers in building 50 paper bridges, trying out a virtual reality Bridge experience and sharing thoughts and experiences with a story gathering team.

Using the theme of a bridge to bring people together, organisers want to attract people from different backgrounds and communities through a wide range of outdoor arts, engineering challenges and community events, culminating in a week of activities in Grantham from 7-14 September.

A local team of creative producers – Simon Hollingworth, Claire Carrington and Georgina Weller – are working with community groups and the project is now at the design and production stage.

Engineers at engineering partner Arup are working to find a workable design for the bridge-shaped arts structure itself, ensuring that it’s safe for performers and audiences

and is still visually arresting and transportable.

A concept bridge unveiled at St Wulfram’s Church in April is touring

the district and there are regular update blogs on www.imagineer-productions.co.uk

A natural burial site is to be established on farmland in South

Kesteven.SKDC’s development management

committee has approved an application for up to 400 burial plots on two hectares of land at Folkingham Farm, Aslackby, along with a 13-space car park.

Natural burials avoid chemical embalming and the use of tombs and headstones. Graves have to be deep enough so there is no risk of excavation by wildlife.

Four football teams are to compete in a new tournament

for the South Kesteven Charity Cup, raising money for local good causes.

Harrowby Utd play Grantham Town, and Bourne Town are up against Lincoln City Academy in the opening matches with knockout ties on Saturday 13 July. The final will take place the following Saturday (20 July) at Harrowby or Grantham (all kick-offs 3pm).

SKDC Councillor Ian Selby, who

donated £878 to fund the trophy through his Ward Member Grant, said: “I’m excited at the prospect of a wonderful tournament that will encourage and help our local football clubs, bring positive benefits for the local community and help local charities, which are chosen by the teams.

“It’s also about fostering a friendly local rivalry, while inspiring the public to support and join in at their football club.”

New company hits ground runningSKDC’s new grounds maintenance

company is off to a flying start with praise pouring in for its high standard of work.

Since its launch on 1 March all council grounds maintenance services have been brought in-house under the new company EnvironmentSK.

Its teams cover everything from marking out sports pitches to keeping village greens looking their best. Comments already received from satisfied clients include:

“A job well done. The grass-cutting completed today was done to a very high standard and the operatives used the blowers to clear all the grass off the footpaths.”

“EnvironmentSK have cut the grass on our green and it looks fantastic. Praise where praise is due.”

Another client hailed the team’s “first class job.”

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Dr Peter Moseley, said: “We continually strive to create a better quality of life for residents and raise

standards across the district through our successful Big Clean campaign.

“We set the bar high through the service we provide, with the emphasis on quality and reliability.

“Clients are seeing what a great job the EnvironmentSK teams are doing and we are determined to build on what has been a tremendous start.”

Grounds maintenance duties vary widely and include grass cutting, weed control, planting schemes, tree and shrub care, and playground and sports pitch maintenance. Clients range from parish councils to sports

clubs, and private companies to individual householders.

“Keeping any sort of green space looking good can be hard work,” said Cllr Dr Moseley. “But by calling on our knowledge and expertise clients can be sure they will receive the very best service that suits their exact needs.”

EnvironmentSK already works with clients throughout South Kesteven and beyond on projects large and small. Anyone interested in obtaining a quote or finding out more should email [email protected] or call 01476 406055.

Around 1,000 people visited Dysart Park on Sunday when

the revamped play area was officially opened by former chair of the Dysart Park Action Group, Hannah Martin.

New play equipment and safety surfacing has been installed at the popular Grantham park thanks to a £55,000 grant from the FCC Communities Foundation. The money was secured after a grant application by SKDC on behalf of the action group, which also contributed £6,000.

The new-look play area was given a big thumbs up by excited youngsters and their families, including the Taylor family.

Harriett (7) said the climbing frame was her favourite piece of equipment, while mum Laura and dad Steve said the family, including one-year-old Harlie, would be using the park more often.

Jo Goddard, who was there with her daughter Grace (3), said: “I think it’s brilliant. We will definitely be coming again.”

Tudor Constantin (8) who was with his dad Simon, agreed, saying they were in the park nearly every day and the new play area was a big improvement.

District councillor Graham Jeal, who is also a member of the action group, said: “This is a much-loved park and I am delighted to see the improvements to the play area.”

SKDC plans to continue improving all its parks and build on their contribution to making South Kesteven a place where people want to live, work and invest.

Cheryl Raynor, FCC Communities Foundation grant manager, said: “We have worked closely with SKDC and

the action group and hopefully park visitors will enjoy the results of all their hard work.”

The action group chairperson, Lydia Gallaher, said: “The new play area is very colourful and we have added some extra equipment. The park is already a lovely place for people to visit but we have big plans for the future and this is a great start.”

The day also featured a series of races for all ages on the theme of ‘You can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread Man.’ Tasty prizes were donated by Hawkens Gingerbread, of Grantham, while Franco’s Ices Ltd provided the medals.

Improvements to a popular community park could see it used as

part of care packages for people with health problems.

The Friends of Queen Elizabeth Park in partnership with SKDC applied to the Government’s Pocket Parks Plus programme and received a £21,000 grant. The council is also putting in almost £9,000.

One of the aims is to promote use of the park for regular exercise. The Friends group and SKDC plan to contact health professionals to investigate opportunities for using the park as part of patient care packages.

The 25-acre Queen Elizabeth Park was designed to commemorate the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday and opened in 1980.

Friends' secretary Elizabeth Bowskill said: “It provided the community with a conservation park, with facilities specifically designed to support the needs of the young, old and those less able-bodied.

“Sadly, the park now falls short of the original objectives. This project provides us with the opportunity to reclaim its original intent.”

The grant will help develop a wildflower meadow; pay for new litter

bins and seating; welcoming and interpretation signs; development of a nature trail; new fishing platforms for the park pond; ecological studies; wheelchair-friendly picnic tables; and help attract new volunteers.

SKDC Deputy Leader, Cllr Kelham Cooke, said: “We want the park to play its part in encouraging healthier lifestyles.

“The project will enable people to directly connect with nature, while engagement with health professionals and schools will allow us to sell the health benefits of our parks.”

A dog rescue charity re-homing over 200 dogs a year is set

to be one of LotterySK's biggest beneficiaries.

Ticket-holders supporting Three Counties Dog Rescue are contributing more than £3,500 to rescue funds this year, welcome news to a charity run entirely by volunteers.

LotterySK was launched last year by SKDC Deputy Leader, Cllr Kelham Cooke, said: “Our aim from the start was to benefit the widest range of good causes possible, and the volunteers who run Three Counties Dog Rescue illustrate the absolutely

amazing work done by groups across the district.

“It never fails to amaze me just how much people put into causes that mean a lot to them personally, and I am delighted that LotterySK is helping to boost the good work they do.”

Three Counties Dog Rescue covers South Kesteven but extends far wider and really deserves a new name, says Gyll Mauchline, who founded it in 1972 with her husband Max. They have re-homed 7,000 dogs since then.

“We actually operate across five counties or more,” she explained. “We set a limit of 50 miles, though, as a realistic distance to travel to see potential new homes for dogs that come in to us. We are very careful where they go.”

Every dog is vet checked, neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped before re-homing, with ill- health and neglect contributing to annual veterinary costs exceeding £100,000 a year.

"We have fund-raisers working hard at events all through the year, plus a shop in Bourne to help raise money so the funding from LotterySK is really appreciated.

"We were one of the first to sign up, as it seemed a great way to raise money and we are really grateful for the support it gives us.”

The kennels have never had so many needy dogs, all listed on their website, and the phone never stops ringing.

It rang off the hook after volunteer Claire Foulds appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain with four telegenic bearded collie cross puppies needing homes, part of the programme's dog adoption series.

Presenter Holly Willoughby's emotional response hit the headlines, social media went into meltdown, and offers of homes flooded in from as far away as the Shetlands and France.

LotterySK now has 83 good causes signed-up to the weekly draw, from youth football teams to school parent teacher associations, charities and community groups.

From each £1 LotterySK ticket sold, 60p goes to local good causes, twice the amount donated to charity by the National Lottery. Another 20p goes to the prize fund, and the rest is for running costs and VAT. To buy tickets, or to register as a good cause, visit www.lotterysk.co.uk
