Time seems to be the one thing we all wishwe had more of and had better ways to utilizesuch a precious commodity. Most of youknow I am a voracious reader and sometimescome across things that make me STOP. Thisarticle below is from Simple Truths - MacAnderson and is one article that certainly didjust that.

He wrote:

A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward thegarage with a steaming cup of coffee in onehand and the morning paper in the other.What began as a typical Saturday morningturned into one of those lessons that lifeseems to hand you from time to time. Let metell you about it:

I turned the dial up into the phone portion ofthe band on my ham radio in order to listen toa Saturday morning swap net. Along the way,I came across an older sounding chap, with atremendous signal and a golden voice. Youknow the kind; he sounded like he should bein the broadcasting business. He was tellingwhomever he was talking with somethingabout "a thousand marbles." I wasintrigued and stopped to listen to what he hadto say.

"Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you're busy

with your job. I'm sure they pay you well butit's a shame you have to be away from homeand your family so much. Hard to believe ayoung fellow should have to work sixty orseventy hours a week to make ends meet. It'stoo bad you missed your daughter's dancerecital," he continued; "Let me tell you some-thing that has helped me keep my own prior-ities." And that's when he began to explainhis theory of a "thousand marbles."

"You see, I sat down one day and did a littlearithmetic. The average person lives aboutseventy-five years. I know, some live moreand some live less, but on average, folks liveabout seventy-five years.

Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and Icame up with 3,900, which is the number ofSaturdays that the average person has in theirentire lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I'mgetting to the important part.

It took me until I was fifty-five years old tothink about all this in any detail," he went on,and by that time I had lived through overtwenty-eight hundred Saturdays. I got tothinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, Ionly had about a thousand of them left toenjoy. So I went to a toy store and boughtevery single marble they had, ended up hav-ing to visit three toy stores to round up 1,000

marbles. I took them home and put theminside a large, clear plastic container righthere in the shack next to my gear.

Every Saturday since then, I have taken onemarble out and thrown it away. I found thatby watching the marbles diminish, I focusedmore on the really important things in life.There's nothing like watching your time hereon this earth run out to help get your priori-ties straight.

Now let me tell you one last thing before Isign off with you and take my lovely wife outfor breakfast. This morning, I took the verylast marble out of the container. I figure thatif I make it until next Saturday then I havebeen given a little extra time. And the onething we can all use is a little more time.

It was nice to meet you Tom. I hope youspend more time with your family, and I hopeto meet you again here on the band. This is a75 year old man, K9NZQ, clear and goingQRT, good morning!"

You could have heard a pin drop on the bandwhen this fellow signed off. I guess he gaveus all a lot to think about. I had planned towork on the antenna that morning, and then Iwas going to meet up with a few hams towork on the next club newsletter. Instead, I

went upstairs and woke my wife up with akiss. "C'mon honey, I'm taking you and thekids to breakfast."

"What brought this on?" she asked with asmile.”Oh, nothing special, it's just been along time since we spent a Saturday togetherwith the kids. And hey, can we stop at a toystore while we're out? I need to buy somemarbles."

Welcome back for a continuation of ‘Facelift orRemodel’. In last month’s issue we discussedgeneral strategies of addressing concerns thatarise, sometimes as a surprise, when remodelinga kitchen or bath. More specifically, the floor-ing, be it of stone, tile, or wood. I discussed thebasic strategies I use to begin all remodel projects andthe criteria to base your decisions on whether to do afacelift or a complete remodel.

CABINETRY

When deciding whether to remod-el or do a facelift with regard tocabinets, the question is really, do Ireplace the vanity and surface com-pletely, or do I resurface the cabi-netry and the surface? Big ques-tion, but again, really a simpleone…. What do you want your endresult vision to be? What is thestyle, color, and condition of thevanity, counter top, sink, and faucet

in. The good thing for those on a tight budget is theseimprovements can be done for much less than completereplacement of the vanity/counter top/sink/faucet andcan be done in multiple stages over a period of timeallowing you, the remodeler, to divide the cost of theproject over time. Let’s discuss this each individually.

What do you do about your vanity? Well…. What isyour ‘End Result Vision’? The decision of what to dohere will be a little more difficult only because of theoptions you have if you decide to replace the vanity. Ifthe concern with the vanity is that it is not tall enough,because say, your previous home’s counters were taller.If that’s your only concern, you can always change thesink to a vessel sink and the faucet to a vessel faucet, soat least your actuating of the water will be raised with-out replacing the cabinet. What is offered in most

builder homes with regard to bathroom vanities are cus-tom fit, cabinets that occupy from wall to wall in yourbathroom. Replacing your custom fit cabinetry withnew custom fit cabinetry can be pricey, but is the ulti-mate way to go. That is one scenario, where you havewalls on each side.

A more competitive way to go, still buying a new cab-inet is to purchase a ‘boxed vanity’. These come instandard sizes i.e., 24”, 30”, 36” 48” and 60” there area few 72” vanities available as well. Being a ‘boxedgood’, your choices are obviously more limited thancustom, what is available is what that particular manu-facturer provides. Usually one color or two per styleand sometimes, size. A ‘boxed vanity’ is a furniturepiece, to be placed either in the center of the opening orall the way to one of the walls. These vanities are fin-ished on the sides for this exact reason. Something elseto keep in mind if the work is being done by a profes-sional and a permit is being pulled, that many plumbingcodes have changed over the years. So, what may havebeen code approved in your bathroom when your homewas built,may not be code approved today.

I recently encountered a client that was replacing abathroom cabinet with a new beautiful contemporaryvanity of exactly the same size as the one she wasreplacing. Unfortunately, the code changed on the dis-tance allowable from the end of the vanity to the mid-dle of the toilet, so they had to purchase another small-er vanity for the job and go thru all the headaches thatreturning the original one brought.

If either your budget does not permit or your cabinetis in good shape, or you just don’t care for the particu-

lar door style and or color. The way to go isresurfacing the existing cabinet. Obtain yourthree quotes from your three trusted resurfacingcontractors and have at it. There are many dif-ferent materials and styles of cabinet coveringand doors, upgraded hinges, new style cabinet

pulls. At the end of the day, you can really change thecomplete look of your cabinet area with as little as aresurfacing job to as high as a complete replacement ofyour current vanity.

With regard to the counter top, the situation is prettymuch the same as the cabinet, but with different mate-rials and products. This is what I mean. When decid-ing what to do with your counter top, ask yourself thesame question. What do I want my counter top to looklike in my ‘End Result Vision’? What kind of conditionis it in and what is its current style. Basically, followthe same strategies. In this case, most cabinetry resur-facing contractors can set you up with, if they don’t dothemselves, with a counter top fabricator. They usuallydeal in granite and marble, but many also deal in man-made materials such as quartz, volcanic limestone,glass, and even thin coverings of many of these materi-als, that can be placed directly on top of your existingcounter top. When doing the latter, the resurfacing overexisting material, make sure you have a qualified con-tractor, as this can be tricky operation.

I will leave the discussion on faucets and sinks for thenext article, as it can get rather detailed due to the manyoptions and how the options are intermingled with thecounter top, faucet, and sink installation options.

Its a subject we can all relate to. Whether we are on a “diet” or not its what

we all think about everyday.

Hi, my name is Juliette DiMaggio and I will be bringing to you my thoughts, ideas, tips andrecipes about food through this column.

My experience with food comes from both a professional and personal stand point. I have beena working cook on the island of Palm Beach for the past 20 or so years. I have seen food trendsgo from the more the better to less is more, salt no salt, sugar no sugar etc. etc.

It's mind boggling. I have also have forgotten more than some folks know.

On a personal level, I am well traveled and love to try new and different foods. I have eatenfoods from truck stops in the deserts of Turkey to fresh fish caught from the pacific oceancooked on heated lava rocks on Easter Island. And, I can honestly say I haven't had too manybad meals, because the way I see it, there was always a memorable experience (good, bad, or indifferent) attached to each meal.

My philosophy about food is simple:1) Eat the best quality foods in small amounts, so you spend your money and calories wisely.

2) Always try to have an herb garden. (I find growing them in pots best)

3) Be creative. Use your recipe as a guideline. If you don't like a certain ingredient change itout for something more favorable to your own palate.

I hope to bring new ideas and recipes to you from time to time thatwill add to your own collection.

Goat Cheese Croustini1 small log goat cheese- room temperature1 teaspoon fennel seeds- ground1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemaryzest of one lemonfresh ground black pepper

In a bowl, mash goat cheese with back of fork. Add all other ingredients and mix well.Spread on toasted baguette slices.

Serve as is or top with one of the following:smoked salmon..proscuttio..roasted pepperssliced kalamata olives.
