The Royal Cornwall saw fewer entries than in previous years, but the standard was exceptionally high, and the breed dominated in the show-rings and in the interbreed classes. Many congratulations to Phil and Tim Eustice for taking the Supreme Championship – it was a very memorable moment when Hopton Maximus 2 was tapped out as the winner by interbreed judge Mr John Hoskin, and the watching crowd were certainly appreciative of the decision! Well done to all who brought their cattle to the show – the breed class judging was a delightful spectacle to watch. We were also quite proud to be awarded Best Trade Stand at Royal Cornwall in the Breed Societies section – well done, girls! The beef market is still moving in our favour, with increasing focus on grass-fed, low input cost, high quality beef. The ‘horsemeat scandal’ has played a helpful part in this, but there are plenty of other advantages that the breed can offer, as we all know. How encouraging to hear at Beef Expo from more than one quarter that the South Devon breed is raising its profile and is being talked about! But TB is still our biggest concern, playing havoc with trading restrictions and the loss of genetics. Please remember that one of the best protections against financial losses to TB is to use pedigree registrations as an insurance policy. Let us know if we can help you. Plans for the Next Generation Weekend are taking shape, and bookings are now being taken. It promises to be a great get-together for younger members (16-30 years), to make new contacts and to receive some very valuable instruction from highly experienced leaders. There are a number of Open Days coming up during the summer, and I hope to see many of you either there or at a show. If not me, then our President John Wakeham will be in attendance – or sometimes both of us! With my best wishes Caroline

THE 4TH NATIONAL SHOW Devon County Show 16th-18th May

Anyone who was able to come to the Show at Devon County enjoyed a brilliant three days of showing, hospitality, good company – and good weather! Thursday morning kicked off with the first class of 11 cows with calves setting a high standard for the rest of the morning, as spectators were treated to a most impressive display of almost 100 South Devon cattle, looking radiant with the sun on their backs. All exhibitors should be proud that their efforts paid off – and it was certainly one of the best National Shows we have staged so far. Anyone seeing the breed for the first time in such numbers and with such quality would not fail to be impressed! Judge, James Eustice was certainly faced with some challenging classes and the bigger groups had to be short-listed before the final placings were decided. His breed champion was A & C Farms’ AI X Mutterton Ashton Bitter, bred by Alan & Elizabeth Bartley and sold at Exeter in 2011 for a (then) new breed record price. Taking reserve champion was the 2011 National Show Champion, Kestle Dahlia 60 from Roger Rundle. Reserve male champion was last year’s National Show male champion, Hopton Maximus 2, shown by Phil Eustice and bred by Nigel & John Williams. Reserve female champion was Roger Rundle’s Kestle Tulip 85, last year’s National Show champion. Winner gaining the highest number of points – THE TRACK MARSHALL TROPHY Winner A & C Farms Reserve Mr R K Rundle A significant win was achieved on Saturday morning in the Commercial classes, when Roger Rundle’s Kestle Dorothy 176 was placed champion. What further proof do we need that the breed can compete head on with continental crosses? South Devons were also on display in some of the young handler competitions – evidence of their docility and ease of handling. It was, though, very disappointing to have to cancel our own Young Handler Competition, sponsored by Towergate Farm Insurance, because of too few competitors. I am pleased to say it will be carried over to the next National Show. Congratulations to ALL exhibitors – you all played a part in creating this impressive show of cattle – namely:

A & C Farms (5); A H & E M Bartley (2); R W & S M Bostelmann (6) Mr O Brewin (5); M E & T E Broome (5); N & E Bunkum (1)

If anyone would like a copy of all the literary creations, they will be available on request from the office. Thank you to all who took the trouble to enter any of these competitions – you provided entertainment for visitors, and also plenty of cake to eat during the show! It was also lovely to dress up, without having to think about wading through mud as we all did last year. SOCIAL EVENTS The Society marquee and a large space outside it, was crowded with members and guests who enjoyed the Cream Tea provided by the South Devon Cattle Breeders Club on Thursday afternoon. There were plenty of scones and cakes,

Page 8: South Devons Newsletter June 2013

and much talk between friends and fellow breeders. Thank you to all those who helped with the catering, especially Ann Daniels who spent a great deal of her time baking in the days prior to the show. (She now has other things to prepare for as her wedding fast approaches!) The Dinner that evening was held in the President’s Pavilion – a very smart marquee in the centre of the showground. About 100 guests enjoyed excellent South Devon beef provided by the Rowes from Tregondale, and the awards were presented by President John Wakeham, and thanks were conveyed to all who had contributed to the success of the National Show. The main social event on Friday was the region-hosted barbecue – South Devon burgers ably cooked by a team of ladies from Devon including Margaret Northey, Debbie Burrough, and Angela Smaridge, and enjoyed by another big crowd of South Devon members and guests. THANK YOU’S In addition to all those mentioned above, we must thank our Stewards – Gordon & Anne Tully, Raymond Perkins, and Ray Masters, who kept the cattle moving in and out of the ring, ensuring that judging could proceed as smoothly as possible. As it was, the judging lasted for almost six hours, such was the quality and numbers! We did not count the number of cups of tea and coffee served up over the three days, but it could not have been achieved without the team in the kitchen – so thank you to all who lent a hand to Debbie and Liz, and to all those who provided cakes to keep us all going! Most important, though, are our sponsors, without whose generosity the additional costs of the National Show, including travel discounts and prize money to exhibitors, would not be covered. We are therefore enormously grateful to all those who donated and sponsored, namely:

AUTUMN SHOW & SALE

Summer has only just started (we hope!), and already I make mention of the Autumn Show & Sale! For good reason, though, for anyone thinking of entering a bull. Please ensure that your application for bull registration and submission of a hair sample for DNA testing is made at least three months prior to the sale date (8th October). Any bulls that have not been DNA typed for sire verification and myostatin by the time of cataloguing will not be allowed into the Sale. This ruling now applies to all Society Sales. Also, if you wish to continue to receive a posted catalogue you should let us know as soon as possible. Society and Midland Club sale catalogues are posted on our website in any case.

TB AND REGISTRATIONS

The number of TB incidences continues to rise, and we see more of our members having to cope with the effects of the disease. A section of Beef Expo was given over to a stand focussing on possible self-help measures, such as the use of mineral bucket stands that cannot be reached by badgers, and badger-proof fencing, as well as advertising the services of the South West TB Advisory Service (www.southwest-tbadvice.co.uk). But pedigree breeders can do more to protect the value of their businesses just by keeping up to date with their pedigree registrations. The difference in values between a non-pedigree and a pedigree casualty is blatant to see in the above table – for both bulls and females – so it is very much in your interests to get in touch with us if you need help with your paperwork. We are always ready and willing to assist at short notice, but if you have a TB test approaching it would be advisable not to delay. We are here to help.

BIRTH NOTIFICATIONS

When you send in your birth notifications (whether or not to be registered as pedigree) please would you help us by including:

• Service date, if known • Name of service sire on your passport application • Calving score • Birth weight, if noted

HERD FERTILITY EXTRACTS FROM EBLEX BETTER RETURNS PROGRAMME

The profitability of a suckler herd is directly related to the number of calves reared per cow or heifer served annually. There are two main ways to improve suckler cow fertility:

- Increase conception rates, and - Reduce the interval between calving and conception

Achieving and maintaining a compact calving period

- Take the bull out after nine weeks - Cull 5-10% of cows calving outside the target calving period - Sell in-calf cows and heifers with calves at foot that fall outside the

target calving period, replacing with heifers

Feeding for fertility The hormones which control fertility and nutrition are closely linked. Under normal conditions dietary energy is the main factor limiting the reproductive performance of suckler cows. The most critical time for cow nutrition is from six weeks before calving through to six weeks after service. The best practical way of judging whether cows are being fed appropriately is by scoring them for body condition. Correct body condition will minimise calving difficulties and minimise the period after the birth when cows are not cycling. Essential micro-nutrients for fertility include copper, selenium and vitamin E. Negative influences on fertility These may include health issues, such as BVD, IBR and leptospirosis, so a health plan for your herd is most important. Difficult calvings greatly increase the risk of reproductive problems in the following breeding season, and also reduce calf survival. There are a number

Page 22: South Devons Newsletter June 2013

22

of ways to reduce the risk of difficult calvings including the use of EBVs in sire and dam selection, myostatin status, and nutrition. Bull fertility Bull fertility is crucial to maintaining a compact calving period, maximising the value of the calf crop and overall herd profitability. Many bulls are sub-fertile which can perhaps pose more of a problem than those that are infertile as you may not be aware until the damage to your calving pattern has been done. Rotating bulls or PD’ing early can identify a problem, as will ‘returning’ females. The EBLEX range of Beef publications are very informative and easy to understand. They can be obtained from the Better Returns Programme, EBLEX, Ashton House, Ambury Road South, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire,

NBA BEEF EXPO 2013

Three Counties Showground, Malvern, 23rd May

Although Malvern is a very suitable venue it was perhaps not a great idea to return there two years in succession, as was reflected in disappointing visitor numbers. The Breed Societies area of the Expo was noticeably quieter for some breeds – but I am pleased to report that we received a steady flow of visitors to our stand throughout the day, and the range and quality of the demonstration cattle was excellent. Thank you to those who brought the cattle – Keith & Margaret Plain, Tom Elliott, Robert & John Hadley, and John & Nigel Williams – and to all those who helped on the stand. Next year the Expo moves north to Hexham.

LIVESTOCK 2013

We shall have a stand at Livestock 2013, Wednesday 3rd/Thursday 4th July at the NEC. The Event no longer focusses just on dairy interests, and we find more beef farmers visiting, as well as dairy farmers looking to change direction into beef. Please see the enclosed leaflet for further information. To help you get to the Event, free coach transport is being arranged from across the country (north, south, east and west). To book a £20 admission ticket to the Event and a place on one of the coaches, telephone 0845 458 2711, or go to www.livestockevent.co.uk. Sounds like a good deal!

SCHMALLENBERG VIRUS

It is very welcome news indeed that a vaccine for the Schmallenberg Virus will be available from the beginning of July – Bovilis SBV – for both cattle and sheep. Although it is purported that previous exposure to the disease brings immunity to surviving animals, there is some doubt as to whether this is definite, so the best advice is to plan to vaccinate your cattle as soon as you can, whether or not you have been affected by Schmallenberg before. Cattle may be vaccinated from 2 months of age, with two doses of 2ml, four weeks apart. As yet, it is not known whether a booster vaccine will be needed thereafter. It is recommended that the vaccination course is completed at least three weeks before mating to ensure that the animal has been actively immunised before the start of gestation.

SECRETARIAL VACANCY

The South Devon Cattle Breeders Club would like to hear from someone willing to take on the task as Secretary as from October 2013. Payment goes with the position. Please contact the Club Treasurer, Mrs Angela Smaridge on 01548 521404/07811 544905, or Mrs Margaret Northey on 01548 830612.

SEMEN AVAILABILITY Please be advised that the Society’s stock of Grove Bellerophon 3 semen is now being made available to any member of the Society, at a cost of £15 per straw, plus distribution charge of £30 plus VAT. As the supply is quite limited, the maximum order will initially be restricted to 20 straws. The Breed Improvement Committee is currently considering a number of new options for the semen collection of a Society Proven Bull.

ROAST BEEF LUNCH – WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

Organised by Ladies in Beef, Royal Bath & West, and RABI

An attempt will be made on Thursday 10th October at the Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet, to break the Guinness World Record for the most people eating a roast meal at the same time and to raise money for

farming families in need. The initiative is led by female beef farmers ‘Ladies in Beef’, and all funds

raised will go to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. To break the world record, which stands at 1,632, there must be at least five

minutes in which everyone is eating at the same time – only those who have their roast beef main course in front of them can be counted. After that

guests can enjoy the rest of their meal, which includes apple pie and cream, at leisure. Guests must arrive by 11.30 am, ready to be seated at noon. There will

be entertainment. Tickets cost £25, to include drinks, and can be booked by telephone on 01749 813899, by e-mailing [email protected], or by logging on to

BEST LIMERICKS, NATIONAL SHOW

1st: by Richard Camp, Horsehill Farm, Lent Hill, Ashburton, Devon

They say where there’s muck there is brass, South Devons are in the top class;

Some people chase Limmies, Others like Simmies,

But a South Devon’s the best user of grass!

2nd: by Chris Camp, Horsehill Farm, Lent Hill, Ashburton, Devon

There once was a breeder called Lello Whose bull had a really deep bellow,

Well-muscled and strong, Incrediby long,

His temperament was ever so mellow!

BEST POEMS, NATIONAL SHOW

1st: A VIRGIN COW’S LAMENT by John & Sue Harvey, Torr Down, Victoria, Australia

I’ve just given birth to a heifer, of pride and milk I am full, But it’s sad to relate my late little state was not brought about by a bull.

I’ve never been naughty, I swear it, despite the calf that I’ve borne, Like Farmer Brown’s tractor, I’m virgo intacta, I’ve not had a bull by the horns.

How drab are the farmyards and meadows, the paddocks seem empty and grey, The one bit of fun in life’s dreary run, has by science been taken away.

If what I have heard is the truth, and natural to all it must seem, A cow’s female passion is all out of fashion and bully is naught but a dream.

I know that the farm is a business, in which we must all pull our weight. Well I’d pull and I’d pull for a strongly built bull, but this phoney business I hate.

No bull has ever caressed me, I’ve not had the ghost of a binge. I’ve never been loved, but brutally shoved, by a bloody great plastic syringe.

It must be thought that I’m jealous, there are things a cow mustn’t say, But those female tarts that handle my parts, still get theirs the old-fashioned way!

2nd: THE CREAM OF BOVINE PROGRESS By David Thomas, Polyphant, Launceston, Cornwall

The cattle breeds of England are known the wide world over, From hardy Highlands in Western Isles, to those which graze in clover.

We were the stockyard of the globe, when came they seeking sires, Improvers for their native stock; took best from many shires.

The colonies and territories were as an open gate, ‘Twas for a better yielding beast in far flung land and states.

Took white faces from the marches, Midland Shorthorns, roans and red, Caledonia’s prized blocks of jet; most beef breeds seen and bred.

Came south and west to farthest shire, Red Devons soon to sail, Milkiest in values of Culm and Honiton, most sure to fill the pail.

Atlantic coast and up Exmoor were reds, not quite as large, But many found a permanent niche down in Brazil and Arg’.

Then on to that great upland, bleak – Dartmoor’s south & western foothills-keep And further to the Channel coast, a bovine which is uppermost.

Plenty of milk of quality and taste; famed cream – not centrifuge in haste, But proper clotted, scalded, slow, famed by the field gangs, out to mow.

Plus meat in plenteous quantity, on ships from Devonport, off to sea. Now in century twenty-one, this breed competes, whoever come.

Later than some, on the world wide stage; gentle with nature, we turn the page. Finds this bovine beauty in many lands, highly appreciated, and in expert hands.

Be it ranches or ranges, far stretching veldt, or in the homeland with Sax’ and Celt

This mighty contender is quickening its paces, as surely it’s quietly going places.

Famous SOUTH DEVONS in an ever widening field, topping suckler cow, or pasture graziers yield,

From mod’ feedlot and to butcher’s blocks, this breed today is proving – tops!
