Mabuyakhulu was speaking at the post- budget gala dinner at Margate Hotel on Monday where he said there was a need to create “a war chest to attract major events to the province”. He has set 1 April, 2015 as the date the new tax will kick in. It is currently unclear how the levy will be collected, but Mabuyakhulu said 10% of the room rate and food bills of foreign tourists would be targeted. “Currently, we are mainly funding our bid initiatives through allocations shared between the province and the respective municipali- ties,” he said. He said the establishment of the hospitality levy will be a combination of direct contribu- tions by industry players as well as a service fee, or levy charged, onto the specified affected service. “For now, we want to engage and consult with stakeholders on the collection modalities of the proposed hospitality levy. We will be shortly engaging with tourism think-tanks and all industry players before the end of the Sep- tember.” Mabuyakhulu said that attracting big events into the province will not only stimulate tourism flow and spend in the province, but are also an important form of post-tertiary educa- tion and training. “They stimulate networking among profes- sional association peers and the development of new industries. Business events stimulate new leisure tourism flow in that between 20% and 40% of delegates to such gatherings tend to be converted as destination-brand ambassa- dors and return as leisure tourists with friends and families,” said Mabuyakhulu. Umtentweni’s Umdlalo Lodge general manager André Stewart said he does not be- lieve this will work for the tourism industry. “Introducing a 10% levy is actually going to hurt tourism. It is going to be a major problem for the industry,” he said. Mdoni House Lodge owner Carl Whittaker said they can’t afford to pay another 10% levy. “It is impossible — we can’t afford it. Re- member, we are a market-related business so that will lead us to increase our prices. So, it will be impossible for us to do business,” he said. On the other hand My Den B&B manager Yvonne Radda said she thinks the levy is not a bad idea. “We are prepared to do it. • Do pick up sushi with your Hashi (Japanesename for chopsticks).•Do not skewer your sushi with your Hashi• Do pick up your sushi with your fingers - it'sacceptable to do this.• Do not rub your Hashi together to removesplinters — doing this assumes that the Hashiis of poor quality and may offend the Itamae.• Do dip the sushi fish side first into the soysauce.• Do not dip the rice side into the soy sauce —the rice is seasoned and flavoured with thechef's expertise, if youdip this side into the soysauce and you insult the chef.• Do eat sushi in one bite.•Donotmakeasoupofthesoysauceandwasa-bi soy sauce - that is just bad etiquette.

Umzumbe council speaker Cllr SizweNgcobo said that out of eightmodules that theward committees have to be trained on,Umzumbe is the only municipality that is onmodule 5, ahead of all other municipalities inthe province.

“This paints a clear picture that thecommunity of Umzumbe participate suffi-ciently in service delivery programmes.Ngcobo congratulated and thanked all theward committees and the councillors who at-tended the training.

“I would like to thank all theward commit-tees and councillors in attendance. I HAVE been surrounded bystrong females all my life.

Mymom being my first rolemodel. While contemplating na-tional Women’s Month, mythoughts turned to her, and to theother strong women who haveshaped my life.

My mom could do everything.Shewaswidowed very young, buther simple “can do” attitude tack-led any challenge, whether fixinga lawn mower or a bicycle tyre orturning a variety of summer fruitintojams, chutneys, preservesanddried fruit.

Shewasawomanwho,withthescantiest of resources, ensured all

fourofuscompletedatertiaryedu-cation, even if it meant that shewent without any luxuries andtreats for many years.

She taught me that a super-womanisn’tborn,she just acceptsall thechallenges thrownherway.

My two sisters remain my con-stant reminders of my mom.

There are timeswhenone of uswillsayordosomethingandthein-stant reminder of ourmother is sostrong, thatwecan’thelpbutlaughand recognise her legacy.

My sisters are my daughters’“go to” people, who are just aphone call away from offering asympathetic ear or some advice.

My mother-in-law is still a bigrole model for our family.

At over 80, she is still a force to

be reckoned with. She lives in a big house, which

is kept spotless without any help. She knows exactly how to cook

the perfect roast lamb or chicken, her array of home-baked biscuitsare legendary and she knows ex-actly what happens on the localand international news scene.

Icancallheranytimeoftheday, for a chat, a virtual cuddle or askher to talk me through an issue, and she is always there.

Throughout my working ca-reer, there has been a number offemalebosses, somestrongerthanothers.

Starting asayoungcadet at theerstwhile department of ForeignAffairs, there were a handful ofwomenwhopaved theway forour

first “madam ambassador”.I have learnt from every one of

them that the biggest lesson wasnot that “wehave toadapt toreachthe top in aman’sworld”, but sim-ply that “we have to give our bestand reach the top”.

Away from work and career, alarge group of girlfriends have be-come my substitute “sisters”,someofwhomarearound the cor-ner and sharemydaily experienc-es.

CHRISTA VAN DER WALT

A CAREER in journalism has a lot goingfor it. It is the perfect outlet forwritingtalent, creativityandsheernosiness.

It is not, however, a career renownedfor its high pay scale or benefits.

With the country rapidly heading fora recession in the opinion of many pessimistic economists, I thought I wouldtake this opportunity to provide a fewtips for those who will find themselvesneeding to tighten their belts. My belthas been as tight as a noose since the

day I was born, and I am thus ideallyplaced to provide simple moneysavingtips.

Here’s the first tip, and it’s a nobrainer: Cancel your DSTV subscription. You are paying well over R700 permonth to watch repeated episodes ofseries from the 1990s, a History Channel full of auctions that took placeyesterday, Sony Max, whose premiseis abhorrently reliant on the misfortune of uneducated Americans andmovie channels which seem to playnothing but Titanic, Jurassic Park andthe making of various movies.

Sport fanatics will argue that cancelling DSTV is like cancelling oxygen.

in certain circumstances, especiallywhen it comes to the purchase of condoms.

As the old meme says, “Can’t feedem, don’t breed em”, and every parentwill agree with me that, no matterhow much they love their children, theycost a fortune. Food. Clothing. Schoolfees.Playdates. It all addsuptoinsatiable spending.

Besides food, there will always bethings that need to be bought in everyhousehold, and these are unavoidable.

These include fans, electronics, heaters, trinkets, toiletries, birthdaypresents, toys for the kids and toilet paper. For all of these, there is probablya China Mall close to you. If you are asize 30 or smaller, you can even buy yourclothes here.

Similarly, if you are willing to believeeverything you read, you can buy allyour required weight loss potions,

weightloss soaps (for the intenselygullible) and makeup. All this for aquarter of the price you would pay atany retail outlet.

Never mind the norefund noexchange policy – if it breaks, just hagglethe shopkeeper down on the price

of the replacement. Some people consider their gym

contract to be the be all and end all oflife.

When tightening your belt, however, this should be cancelled the sameday as your DSTV subscription. Whileexercise, health and the avoidance ofobesity are everpressing in the light ofthe proliferation of pizza outlets, KFCsand Cinnabons, there are other meansat our disposal.

Make a onceoff investment in anexercise bike or orbitrek. Attend LisaRaleigh’s free daily exercise classes atSuncoast, drink less beer, or walk ratherthan taking the lift.

With these handy saving measuresin place, you will have the money youneed for the things we love payingmost: Mortgages, overinflated car instalments, school fees and, of course, taxes.

Budgeting advice from apauper

To them I say, watchyour games at the pub.

They say you haveto spend money to savemoney, and I am firmlyin agreement with this

A bang almightyDAVID Lawson’s letter (August 15, 2014)

refers. When I condensed my letteragainst the theories of evolution and

Darwinism, it didnotmean that thereare gapsinmyeducationregardingscience, historyandtheology. You insult me. Racism started in the1600s;DavidHume, aEuropeanpsychologist, stated that Africans were naturally inferior toEuropeans.

Thomas Herbert believed that Africanswere inferior and had descended from apes.Phrenology (study of skull-shape), a “fake” sci-ence started even before Darwinism, statedthat Africans, due to their skull shape, wereinferior intellectually, culturally and morallythanEuropeansandTeleologystated thatAfri-cans were not thinkers and were obviouslymade to serveEuropeans.

These ideasjustified the Eu-ropean involve-ment in theAfri-can-slave trade.Only a fewpeoplewereagainstslaveryandfoughtagainstit.

“Slaves”, as it appears in the Bible refers toworkers (paid with food, clothing and shelter)who were supposed to be treated well. Aren’tweallslavestoourjobs?Aren’tweallsupposedto be treated well while doing our jobs? As forslavery in Islam, theQuranneither ignoresnorcondemns it. In fact a large part of the Shariais dedicated to the practice hence the positionof Islamic states.

AncientGreekswerephilosophersofevery-thing around them, and included gods, god-desses,heroes,heroinesandnaturegodssimi-lar to thegodsof ancient India.Romanbarbar-ians (Nero andhis type);whohadno culture oftheir own, adopted Greek culture when they

conquered Greece.Galileo (Christian scientist - father of mod-

ern science)was chargedwithheresywhenherefuted Aristotle (Greek philosopher) and theRoman Catholic Church when he agreed withCopernicus’s theory that theEarthandplanetsrevolved around the sun.

Itwas theRomanCatholicChurchthatmur-deredandpersecutedmainlineChristians(for-merly known as Protestants) to such an extentthat survivors had to escape to other parts ofthe world. The Roman Catholic Church addedso much pagan traditions to Christianity thatone can barely see Christ therein. So who cantrust what a Roman Catholic says. By the way,the pope is the head of the Roman CatholicChurch, not Christ.

In conclu-sion, evolution-ists teach thatall life arosefrom non-lifeand evolvedfrom simplercreatures to

morecomplex life forms. Inotherwords, a tinycell eventually became an amoeba, then a liz-ard, then amonkey, then finally a human overa period of billions of years.

After 200 years of digging beneath all theEarth’s continents, this cannot be proven asthere isnoevidence.Where there isnorealevi-dence, evolutionary scientists simplymakeas-sumptions using words like “could”, “maybe”or “perhaps”. Evolution in no way fits all thefacts available. The theory of evolution is thedenial of Almighty God and the denial that allliving things are engineered or exquisitely de-signed by Him.

S. Naidoo• Letter shortened.

THE letters in the Fever by DavidLawson and the anonymous“Carneades” refer.

While I am sure both writers aregoodcompanyandsuccessful in theirown right, they have both adoptedthe usual modus operandi utilised

by those who either see themselvesas “new atheists” or sympathisewith them.

Firstly, they accuse letter writerS.Naidooof having some kind ofreli-gious agenda without questioningtheir own. Secondly, they both skirt

the lineon ad hominem attacks, withLawson’s letter exhibiting a veiledform of mockery.

This seems to be the way ofevolutionists and atheists: If youquestionwhat Ibelieve in, Iam goingto try to make you feel stupid about

your beliefs and probably use thinlyveiled mockery to question yourintelligence.

I am always amused when talk-ingand listening toatheists, particu-larly those of the new atheist move-ment.

They often think of themselves asa borderline genius with a magnifi-

cent understanding of the world andits works. They will also often saythey abandoned Godat the ageof sixor so, just to addproof of theirmentalprowess. Should a Christian say theyhave “found God” at the age of six, they are very often labelled as beingbrainwashed.

Petro Smith

No educational gaps here, actually

I HEREBY challenge David Lawson’smisinformation that Islam permitsslavery (Fever, 15 August).

In theQuran (90:13) setting freeofslaves is laid down as one the condi-tions of true belief and action.

There is neither any verse of theQuran nor any tradition of theProphet permitting the sale and pur-

chase of slaves, a practicewhichwasdiscontinued under the Prophet andthe Four Caliphs.

Ontheotherhand,theneedoffree-ing slaves is stressed throughout.

Certainsinscouldonlybeexpiatedby the freeing of slaves.

Slaves could purchase their free-dom by providing elementary tuition

to the children of their masters.Acertainamountofmoney is tobe

set aside by the state for the sole pur-pose of freeing slaves.

It has actually been remarked in aletterbySirJosephThomsontoTimesLondon (14 November, 1887) as fol-lows:

“I unhesitatingly affirm, and I

speak from a wider experience ofEastern Central Africa than any ofyour correspondents possess, that ifthe slave trade thrives it is becauseIslam has not been introduced inthose regions …”

A 16-YEAR-OLD lad from Ramsgate hasalready found a way to make extrapocket money and possibly turn this

hobby into a lucrative business.Kyle Zangel, who is in grade 10 at Southcity

Christian College, says photography has al-ways been his first love.

After moving from Scottburgh last year, hesaw it develop into a passion.

“I have not attended any courses yet. I’vebeen teaching myself through trial and error,”he said.

Zangel added that he eventually would liketomove toCapeTownwhereheplans toattenda top photography school.

“The sky is the limit.”He said another career choice would be to

becomeapilot.“Ihavealwayswantedtofly, butfinancial restraints have left me withphotography instead of flight training.”

He said he decided to start Zangel Photo-graphy when his mother was looking for aphotographer for an event she was planning.

“As there are few professional photogra-phers on the South Coast and their prices arehigh, I started thinking about a photographyservice for the client who can’t afford thoseprices, but who will still get professional re-sults,” he said.

Zangel said he’s only done two photoshootsso far, but has been very involved with eventsat his school.

“Weddings are far out of my league. I findmyself drawn more to personal and familyphotos, but wouldn’t hesitate to try productphotography, and I am interested in abstract, macro, landscape photography.”

Youngsters, the countryneeds artisans>> artisans can demand monthly salaries of up to R50 000 and moreSOUTH Africa has a shortfall of about40 000 skilled artisans and industries oftenhave to import migrant workers at exorbitant costs.

In a recent speech, the South AfricanMinister of Higher Education, BladeNzimande, quoted this figure when heopened a technical training academy inCape Town. Those involved in training artisans rejoiced when Nzimande declared 2013the Year of the Artisan in March.

“The Year of the Artisan is good news forthe industry because we need to seriouslyfocus on training people for the trades,” saysSam Zungu, principal of the Umfolozi College, aninstitutionforfurthereducationandtraining (FET) with five campuses in KwaZuluNatal.

“Young people need to be made awareof the great need for skilled people. Thiscountry needs artisans across the board infields such as electricity, plumbing, fittingandturningandmechanisation.Thebiggestneed is in the energy sector where we needskilled people to maintain and build infrastructure.”

“Eskom is battling and new power plantsare being erected, but we do not have a bigenough pool of skilled people to draw fromlocally for these projects. We are moving towards the same situation as before 2010when the country had to import artisans towork on the stadiums and infrastructureneeded for the Soccer World Cup.”

The Year of the Artisan dovetails neatlywith the South African government’sNational Development Plan (NDP). and focuses on reducing poverty and inequality.Crucial to attaining to these goals, it is thestated aim of training at least 30 000 qualified artisans annually.

African Education WeekSam Zungu is chaired a panel discussion

on the future of FET Colleges during theAfrican Education Week at the SandtonConvention Centre in Johannesburg in June2014.

He explains that while artisans can earnfairly high salaries, there is still a stigma attached to the trades which also impactsnegatively on how FET colleges are viewed.

“We need to change perceptions and we

need to create an awareness of theopportunities for artisans. There are manyopportunities for skilled people to becomeentrepreneurs thus creating work opportunities for others.”

South Africa needs specialist artisansAnother speaker at African Education

Week, Wilson Nzimande, head of Imithente,an education and business consultancy, cautions that South Africa needs specialistartisans,– among others, in the maritimefields.

More than 90% of South African tradetakes place via oceans.

“Many people want to train as, forexample, general electricians or mechanics. But we need specialists – we need diverswho can do specialist welding and paintingunder water and we need ship building specialists. In many fields South Africa relies onforeigners and this is not an acceptablestrategy. We need to develop artisans because they are incredibly important in helping to grow developing countries economically.”

“In this Year of the Artisan we need morethan just words and rallies. We need a particular programme of action. This meansthat the government should do more tostructure incentive mechanisms to thebenefit of all parties.”

Too much emphasis on university degreeHorst Weinert, managing director of

Festo Didactics, says there is concern thatthe average age of South African artisans is50.

“These people will soon be retiring andthere will be few to take their place if we donot train enough people to fill their shoes.”

Universityeducated Weinert believesthere is too much emphasis on a universitydegree.

“There are about 800 000 universitystudents and 600 000 students at universities of technology and only between100 000 and 200 000 at FET colleges. Thispyramid is the wrong way around. We needmore enrolments at FET colleges.”

According to Weinert, artisans can demand monthly salaries of up to R50 000and more.

“Highly skilled artisans are in short supply and those who can deliver the goods canbasically determine their own salaries.”

His advice to people who are set on obtaining a university degree in fields such asengineering is to enrol at an FET college forat least one year.

“This practical training obtained at a FETcollege will enable the student to flythrough university.”

Although the trades are dominated bymen, Weinert says there are many opportunities for women in field such as fitting andturning, instrumentation mechanisationand mechatronics – a multidisciplinary fieldof engineering which combines mechanical, control, electrical and computer engineering.

“I am a huge supporter of competitionslike WorldSkills International (previouslyknown as the Skills Olympics). There top artisans from different countries competeagainst each other. These competitions setbenchmarks. The winners are highly regardedandotherslookuptothemasleadersandinnovators in their field. This can act as inspiration for young people to train as artisans. When magic is created productivity is boostedandthisinturnbooststheeconomy,”saysWeinert.

Parson’s father, Charles, bought the private school, SouthCoast Academy, in 2004.

Meet the SouthCoast’s top spellerCANDYCE KRISHNA>>[email protected]

WORDS that many may noteven know exist, werelearnt, spelt and defined at

theSouthCoastFever’s firstKZNPre-mier Spelling Bee.

The event saw 79 pupils fromschools within the Ugu District com-pete at the Norwegian Settler’sChurch on Saturday.

Siyabonga Shandu of PhindaveleHigh earned himself the title of “kingbee” as he breezed through everyword with confidence.

Siyabonga won himself a total ofR11 000 in cash after winning boththe spelling competition and the

bonus round.Excited, nervous and

anxious, spellers madetheir way through thevenue, pulled out theirlistsofwordsandwentoverit one last time.

Emcee for the day, CelesteHadlow, did a great job in calmingparticipantsdownwithdancingandsinging before the competition be-gan.

When judges Neil Tapinos(general manager for KZN com-munity titles), Vusi Mthalane(news editor, South Coast Fe-ver) and Sithembiso Maguts-hwa (Ugu Department of Edu-cation) made their way to the

fore, contestants knewthe time had come fortheirhardworktofinallypay off.

While shot nervesgot the better of some, others shone throughthe elimination rounds

until only the top 10 re-mained.

After lunch, the 10 contestantstooktothestagewherefiveofthemsuccumbed to the pressure ofsome difficult words.

In this round, contestantshadtospellanddefinethewordswhich the judges asked, whichwas no easy task.

The top fivecontestantswere

given two chances to prove them-selves as a bonus round applied.

Shandu breezed through spellingand defining words and left specta-tors thinking that this may be secondnature to him.

Tapinosturnedintoan Idols judge, specifically Randal, saying he had toput some pressure on Shandu.

Well, that didn’t work. Shanduspelt pneumonoultramicroscopicsili-covolcancokoniosis, a 45-letter wordwith ease.

Hedefined it perfectly too - anarti-ficial word used to refer to a lung dis-ease caused by inhaling very fine ashand sand dust.

The crowd went crazy and somespectators had tears in their eyes.

His teacher, Cynthia Mkhize, saidSiyabonga practiced every day sincehis entry in the competition was con-firmed.

Other prizes he took home were atrophyandcertificate, aboxofbooks, sponsored by Rotary, a GemsSchoolwear voucher and a Sparvoucher.

His teacherreceivedaSparvouch-er and R1 000 cash.

The school received books to thevalue of R3 000 from Via Afrika.

Solving an ant infestation

ANTS are empire builders and their colonies are designed to grow at any expense – including yours. Nopest control company needs to tell you that there’sa serious ant infestation problem in the country toknow this for a fact.

Pest control specialists deal with this on a dailybasis as the demand to control outbreaks isincreasing.

Did you know?Around the country, different species of ants can

be found and control methods for each varies. Thisis why it is advisable to contact a professional pestcontrol operator or company.

Ants live in colonies and hence control can be quitedifficult. There may be thousands of ants in a colony.

Ants are attracted to sugar and many other typesof food and water as they need proteins and carbohydrates in their diets.

Applicationofresidualspraysmayonlyaffect10%of the colony which is visible on the outside of thecolony.

Ant baits of different types are the new and betterway of treating ants as the baits are taken to the nestand helps to control the whole colony.

Ants are not seasonal but some species are morevisible in summer as they swarm in large numbersfrom their nests.

They are then attracted into buildings due to theinterior lights. An abundance of food sources andwarmer temperatures will also attract ants into buildings throughout the year. Another element affectingthe number of ants is the climate and weather conditions.

What to look out for:>> All cracks and gaps in exterior walls which provideaccess to voids or interior areas should be sealed.>> Cracks in slabs and gaps in expansion joints shouldbe filled.>> Food spillages should be cleaned up immediately.>> Open food containers attract ants into the building.>> The most common method of control is to followant trails to the nests and treat them with a residualinsecticide. Follow up treatments on a regular basisis necessary to ensure complete control. Exterior nestsshould be drenched with a liquid formulation. A barrier spray may also be applied to repel foraging workers.

Don’t be chicken, grow your own veggies>> Even if you have a small garden, or live in a flat with just a patio, there is nothing stopping you growing your ownveggies

ALL you need to do is buy (ormake) a shallow wooden slattedbox on legs in which you can

plant a smorgasbord of salads, herbsand veggies. Make sure your box is in asunny position for the plants to thrive.

PreparationFirst line your box with a material

called Weed Guard. It will prevent thesoil falling through but still allow drainage. Staple the material to the edges ofthe box right up to the edge and thentrim off.

DrainageAdd a 5cm layer of LECA (a clay like

substance) for drainage.Soil mixturePotting soil and Superflora Mix– fill

the box three quarters full with pottingsoil, then add Superflora. For every twobags of 30dm potting soil you add ten

litres of Superflora Mix (two to one).Mix it thoroughly with the potting soiland the same time loosening up thesoil for drainage.

FeedingAdd 60g of superphosphate and 60

g of bonemeal – about a handful. Superphosphate is a fast acting and helpsroot development while bonemeal willwork in the longterm.

Weed controlAdd snapshot to stop weed growth.

Sprinkle snapshot lightly over the soiland mix it before planting your veggies.

What to plantChoose your veggies according to the

season. If you are not sure what toplant ask at your nearest garden centre.Remember to plant a variety so youaren’t eating spring onions or lettuceevery day!

How to plantDig a hole the size and depth of the

plant. Remember when you take yourseedling out of the tray loosen up theroots as their growth has been stifled inthe container. Cover the seedling withsoil, pressing lightly around it. You needto space your veggies about 25cm apartso they have room to grow.

Keep insects away naturallyPlant Marigolds in between – not

only are they pretty but they keep insects away!

MulchingUse Rooibos mulch – the mulching

prevents evaporation and the Rooiboswill prevent snails from eating your precious plants.

FeedingFeed your plants with Seagro. Use

one cap in every two litres of water

every two weeks – it encourages healthleaf growth. You can also use 25ml ofTrelimix in 2 litres of water every weekto encourage growth

Insect controlTo prevent Aphids use, Margaret

Roberts organic insecticide and read theinstructions carefully.

Voila! It’s done! If you are feeling creative

why not paint your box your favouritecolour and add even more colour toyour garden or patio?

You now have your own veggie garden – organically grown – and canwander out and choose exactly whatfresh veg or salad you would like foryour meal.

Thinning and spacingThe seedlings can be thinned out or

transplanted when they start to spread

themselves. Vegetables need space todevelop and they do not like competingfor moisture, food and light.

With good air circulation there is lesschance of disease as well. Beetroot inparticular, will not develop thickenedroots if they are not thinned out.

What you need:• A wooden slatted box on legs• Weed Guard• LECA – for drainage• Potting soil and Superflora Mix• Bonemeal and Superphosphate• Hand trowel and fork• Vegetable and other selected seedlings• Snapshot – weed control• Rooibos Mulch• Margaret Roberts organic insecticide• Seagro and Trelimix• Sprayer bottle and gloves.

Remodelling children’s bathroomKids’ bathrooms? Child’s play!

The bathroom used by your kids is often a challenge to remodel. Not only are the users prone to complaining if it is not to their liking, but their likes willwithout doubt change as the years go by.Plan ahead

While some households might enjoy the luxury ofa bathroom that is specifically created for small children, most will require this bathroom to evolve withtheir children’s changing needs. The key is to planahead – will having a bathroom with childsized fittings lower the value of the home you are planningto sell in just two years? Is this type of remodellingproject worth the expense for a onechild household? What can be done to make an existing bathroomchildfriendly?A question of safety

Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager at Tile Africa, believes that the first consideration for a child’s

requires more privacy. Alternatively, half walls can beadded if the design of the bathroom allows.

Bubbles and rubber duckiesChildren’s bathrooms should be fun, says van

Niekerk, but as a child’s taste can differ vastly yearon year, beware of multicoloured permanent fittingsand expensive painted murals. Instead, select neutralaccessories in white or wood, and neutral walls.>> Colour highlights can then be introduced usinghighgloss glass mosaics, used as a border, or to createa mosaic pattern on the wall.>> A specific theme can be introduced with showercurtains, drawer knobs and towels which are easilyreplaced when they have lost their appeal for thechild.>>Alwaysallowforadequatestoragespace, whetherthese be waterproof containers for bath toys or drawers for a teenager’s cosmetics.

bathroom should be that of safety. “Turn down thetemperature of the geyser fitted for this bathroom, and ensure that all medicines and cleaning products are safely stored in childproof cupboards. Tileson walls and floors are ideal as they provide a durable, water resistant and easy to clean surface. Furthermore, textured tiles, such as Forte, Futura,Stockton or Colorado are recommended for thefloor as they are more slipresistant than smoothtiles. Stairs leading up to the bath are very romanticin an adult’s bathroom, but result in a higher stepinto the bath which can be dangerous for a child.Reaching over these stairs when bathing a smallchild is also more difficult.”

Next, consider the scale that is appropriate ina child’s bathroom. Smallscale toilets and basinscan be fitted, or fullsize fittings like basins can behung lower on the wall. However, if a less permanent solution is required, ensure that stable, slipproof stools are provided so that children can reachbasins, taps and toothbrushes with ease. In a bathroom that is used by people of various ages, consider adjustable showerheads that will suit allheights, or the addition of body sprays, and mirrorsthat can tilt to accommodate children.

Separating the shower, bath and basin is usefulwhen children of varying ages are sharing a bathroom, enabling an older child to bath or showerwhile the other is supervised using the basin.Opaque shower doors can be fitted when one child

Handy checklist whenbuying property>> Prospective buyers need to know what it is they are looking for

IN today’s property market, buyers whoare looking to purchase a home whetherto upgrade, downsize or simply enter the

market for the first time need to have awell thought out strategy and game plan.

“It is challenging to achieve a goal without having a clear idea of what it is you wantand where you would like see yourself in thefuture,” says Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/MAXof Southern Africa.

He offers potential home buyers a fewtips to keep in mind when looking to purchase a property in the current competitivemarket environment:

Assess your needs and have realisticexpectations

Goslett says that before buyers evenstart looking at properties, they need toknow what it is they need. “This is the realitycheck of the buying process. It could take abit of time and planning, but it is importantto sit down either alone or with the otherfamily members who will be living in thehome to decide exactly what the essentialsare and what can be compromised on. Makea list for consideration of all the things thatthe new home should have, such as thenumber of bedrooms, size of the garden, location or proximity to your work or children’s school.”

He says that once a buyer has a clear outline of what they are looking for, they should

look at what has sold over the past sixmonths that fits their requirements. Thatwill provide a guideline to what they can expecttopayforahomethatmeetstheircriteria. If the price range is above what the buyercan afford, it might mean waiting or reassessing the list of requirements. “An estateagent working in the area in which the buyeris interested in purchasing, will be able toprovide average house prices and thenecessary information regarding the property for sale in the area that will fit theirneeds,” says Goslett.

Get home loan preapprovalGetting preapproved means that a

bank, bondoriginatororfinancial institutionhas given the buyer an amount that they arewilling to finance based on the informationthat the buyer has provided, explains Goslett. “During the prequalification process afull credit assessment and risk analysis willbe performed on the buyer’s financial credentials. Once complete, the bank or bondoriginator will provide the buyer with a preapproval certificate, which holds moreweight in property negotiations and canspeed up the process.”

The preapproval certificate will cite thebond amount, along with the interest rateon the loan and the monthly repaymentamount. Goslett says that it is important tonote that the final approval may be subject

to a number of factors such as the bank’sproperty valuation and a signed offer to purchase.

For preapproval buyers will require:• Latest payslip• Proof of identification• Three months’ bank statements• Other relevant documentation will de

pend on the financial institutionMake a fair, marketrelated offerAccording to Goslett, market conditions

currently tend to weigh in the seller’s favourwith inventory of property in short supply.

“A year ago buyers could have got awaywith putting in a cheeky offer, but we areseeing a shift in the market and sellers arenot accepting offers that they do not see asfair and market related.”

He says today there are more and morebuyers wanting to purchase property, withfewer properties available making it an extremely competitive environment. “Buyerswho make offers below market value willmore than likely not get the property. Buyersneed to present a fair offer that is withintheir price range, providing some negotiation room on both ends.”

He says bearing these tips in mind willprovide buyers with an excellent guidelineto ensure they can successfully navigate theproperty market and find the right home tomeet their needs.

Wooden wall panels on the comeback trailUSING wooden wall panels can make anyroom inviting and visually pleasing no whatmatter the décor scheme.

Wooden wall panels in openplan living areas

The brightness of white walls can oftenbe nicely offset by an accent piece createdwith wall panelling.

Why not create a central accent piece inyour living room with wooden wall panelsbehind your TV stand to draw your attentionupward, creating the illusion of a grand entertainment centre.

Wooden panels can also be used to separate sections in your living space and canhelp to bring together areas that serve different purposes in your home.

Use wooden wall panels instead ofpaint

Can’t decide on a paint colour for yourbedroom wall? Go for wall panels instead,Bring the warmth of wood into your bedroom and enhance your sanctuary.

Wooden wall panels are easy for DIY enthusiasts to install.

The rich tones of wood are totally complimentary to any bedroom colour or texture

scheme.Use wooden wall panels to add depth to

a small roomContrary to the (mis)conception that

small rooms should only ever be paintedwhite in order to appear larger, addingwooden wall panels actually adds depthand makes the room appear bigger.

Use wooden wall panels to change thelook of any room

use wooden wall panels instead of – ormixed with – tiles for varied texture.

Whatever you choose to do with woodenwall panelling, it’s easy to do it yourself. Using wall panels is a costeffective way to update the look of your home.

If you’re still not convinced – woodenwall panels are also removable, makingthem the perfect solution for personalisinga rented home. Women24.

Prevention better than cure

SECURITY is a priority for us all, but areyou doing everything you can to keepyour home safe from robbers. Try thesetips for better safety.

• Get to know your neighbours Ifyou don't know your neighbours, makeaneffort to gettogetherwiththemandmake a list of their names and phonenumbers. You will all then be able tospot unusual activity in your street andkeep an eye out for each other.

• Close doors Don't leave yourgatesopen, carrunningindrivewayandsecurity doors open while you “just runinside” to fetch something. That's allthe time a lurking house robber needsto steal your car and/or its contents, orto follow you into the house.

• Keep security barriers on doorsand windows closed and locked, evenwhen you're home.

• Make sure your car looks empty Don't leave items visible in your car forsmashandgrab robbers. Rather storethem in the boot, and if you don't haveautomatic locking, lock the boot before you get into the car.

The same applies if you park the car

in your driveway or street and not in agarage.

• Know your employees Know whoyou are employing, whether they'refulltime domestic employees or contract workers. Ask for IDs so you canmake copies; get references for builders or repair companies; don't allowanyone onto the property if they don'tcomply.

• Keep things tidy Clean up yourproperty. House robbers use overgrowntrees on the perimeter to jump overelectric fences or walls. Unkemptshrubbery can provide hiding places, and equipment left lying around makehandy breakin tools or weaponsagainst dogs, or you.

• Test your security systems Checkyour security systems at home periodicallytomakesureeverythingisinworking order, including barriers on doorsand windows.

If you do find criminals on yourproperty, keep calm and don't makeeye contact.

Let them take your possessions they're replaceable, but lives aren't.

Add a vintage feel by adorningyour walls with a whitewashedlook panel. Carry it through on theceilingaswelltointensifythefeel.Use mahogany in a rich schemewith striking effect or create aglowing contrast with whites andbrights.

Use wooden wall panels inplace of tiles

Do you have a bar or kitchencounter you want to revamp?Give it a fresh look with warmwooden wall panels instead ofcold tiles.

Or do you perhaps want to redo the kitchen walls. You could

WHO said you can't own an American muscletruck in South Africa? Fully-modified, right-handdriveDodgeRamtrucksareimportedandmodified from U.S. Trucks and are availablelocally. U.S. Trucks has sold over 200modifiedDodgeRam trucks in SouthAfrica after identi-fying a demand for this niche market in 2006,reveals company owner Thinus de Beer.

DeBeersaid: "Left-handdrivevehiclescan-notbe legally registered inSouthAfricaand, asa Dodge Ram enthusiast, I made the decisionto importa fewmodelsandmodify themfor re-sale. "At any given time, there are typically 18trucks on order, which equates to a three orfour-month waiting list. The greatest demandhas come from fishing enthusiasts who needpowerful vehicles to tow their boats, howeveran increasing number of trucks are being soldfor everyday use too."

According to De Beer, the conversion pro-cess takes about nine days to complete.

"All mechanical and gearing components, brakeboostersandelectronicsaremovedfromthe left-handsideof the vehicle to the right.Wepredominantly purchase export-spec vehiclesfrom Europe, so the dashboard readings havealreadybeenconvertedfromimperialtometricmeasurements."

Thecompanystrivestoretainasmuchorigi-nal equipment manufacturer (OEM) compo-nents as possible, says the owner: "It is impor-

tant to maintain the same look and feel of theOEM vehicle, and the largest adjustment ismade to the section of protruding dashboardwhere the speedometer and odometer are lo-cated.Whilemoving it fromoneside to theoth-er, it is essential to be mindful of the originalstyleofthedashboard,andtorecoveritcareful-ly again."

Due to the intricate nature ofmodifying thevehicles, De Beer admits that the conversionprocess is costly. "Duringmodifications, thereare numerous components that require a con-siderableamountofmanhourstocomplete.Asa result, the conversion equates to aboutR200 000 over and above the import price ofthe vehicle."

The trucks include the top-of-the-range3500 Series mega cab 4x4 Laramie, whichcomes standard with luxury features such asleather interior and on-board electronics. It'spoweredbya261kW6.7litreCumminsISBtur-bodiesel engine, which boasts 1 085Nm to en-able a 1.3-ton payload, and tow loads of up to6.9 tons.

The mid-level 2500 Series crew cab 4x4Laramie model is powered by the same Cum-mins engine.

"Given the growth in demand from urbancustomersinparticular, weareconsideringtheoption of establishing a Johannesburg branchin the foreseeable future."

NO matter where you live orwhat car you drive, chancesare you can squeeze a bitmoremileageoutofeachtankof fuel. These fuel saving tipsfrom Goodyear can help youimprove your car’s fuel econ-omy, savemoney, andreducecarbon dioxide emissions.

Slow downOne of the easiest and

mostefficientwaystosavefu-el is to reduce your speed, asthe slower you drive, themore efficiently your engineperforms.

As your speed increases,so does your fuel consump-tion - an increase of speedfrom 40km/h to 80km/h al-most doubles one’s fuel con-sumption. However, travel-ling tooslowlycanalso leadtohigher consumption. The op-timum fuel economy occursbetween 50km/h and 70km/h.

ChangeyourdrivingstyleYou can save fuel by accel-

erating gradually and bychanging gears as smoothlyas possible. Avoid brakingsharply wherever possible, and take a long view of theroadahead, coastingsafely toan intersection in front of youwhereyouseetrafficstopped.Driving aggressively, can useas much as 20% more fuelthan smooth driving.

Use the highest possiblegear

Cars are designed to startin the lowest gear possible, because that’s where theyhave themostpower.Howev-er, driving in the highest gearpossible can improveyour fu-el economy, so gear up whenit is safe to do so.

Use cruise controlUsing cruise control can

improve your fuel consump-tion by enabling you tomain-tain a steady speed on flatroads or downhill. If you aredriving uphill, using cruisecontrolwill force your vehicle

to speed up in order to main-tain thepreset speed, thus in-creasing fuel consumption.

Use air-conditioning se-lectively

The air conditioner is anextra burden for the car’s en-gine, and increases the con-sumption of fuel. Considerswitching off the air condi-tionerwhenoutsidetempera-tures allow you to do so.

Avoid excessive idlingWhen a car is idling, it is

stillusingfuel.Turningtheen-gine off while you wait andthen restarting when you areready to move uses less fuelthanrunningthecaratstand-still.

Remove unnecessaryload

The heavier the vehicle is,the more energy is needed tomove it. Hence, carryingaround excessweight will re-sult in higher fuel consump-tion. Think carefully aboutwhatyouneedtocarryinyourcar, and empty out all unnec-essary items.

Keep thewindows closedOpen windows and sun-

roofs create aerodynamicdrag,which slows downyour

vehicle. To maintain the re-quired speed, more energy, andthereforemore fuel, is re-quired. Increase your fuel ef-ficiency simply by closingyour windows and sunroof.

Maintain your car prop-erly

Keep your vehicle wellmaintained and servicing itregularlykeepsitoperatingatpeak efficiency. Fouled sparkplugs, a dirty air filter or acloggedfuelfilterwillallnega-tively affect your fuel econo-my. Changingmotor oil regu-larlyisalsocrucialforfueleffi-ciency.

Keep your tyres properlyinflated

Underinflated tyres offerresistance, and thus requiremore energy to roll. Thistranslates into higher fuelconsumption. It is importantto regularly check the airpressure in your tyres, andensure that they are inflatedcorrectly,inlinewiththepres-sure indicated in your own-er‘s manual. Correctly inflat-edtyresnotonlysaveyoufuel,but are also safer and lastlonger.

Planet conjunctionseen on Monday>> Conjunction occurs when two astronomical objects have either thesame right ascension or the same ecliptical longitude

RADO [email protected]

THOSE who watched the con-junctionofplanetsJupiterandVenus on Monday, 18 August

at sunrise as we announced earlier, will agree that it was a spectacularview.

But for those who missed it, thepicturethatgoeswiththisarticlewillgive them an idea of what theymissed.

A conjunction occurs whentwo astronomical objects have ei-ther the same right ascension or thesame ecliptical longitude, normallywhen observed from the Earth.

Anyplanet conjunction is beauti-

ful, but this onewasmagnificent be-cause itwasmadeby two thebright-est planets in our skies separatedbyonly 0.2°.

Thoughseparatedby693millionkm in space, the two planets ap-peared tobeclose tooneanotherbe-cause they appeared in the same di-rection as traveling along the Eclip-tic as all planets travel more or less.

This slight variance from theEcliptic makes the event rare, whileif therewasnone, closeconjunctionswill be a commonplace event, everytime the planets appeared in thesame direction. Venus was at 240million km from us, Jupiter at 940million km. Venus was seven timesbrighter than Jupiter, but 3 times

smaller, appearingalmost full as it isapproaching its furthest positionfrom us behind the Sun. The inserton the left shows their position inspace, while the right shows theplanets through a telescope with48X power.

The previous close conjunctionwas on 23 Feb 1999, even closerthan the current at 0.1°.

The next one will be next year on1 July, at 0.2° separation, immedi-atelyafter sunset, butexpect the twoplanets tohavespectacular touchon27 August 2016 at 0.1° seen fromhere again after sunset, while in theAmericastheywillbeseenasoneob-ject with a naked eye, at the incredi-ble 0.07°.

THESpringbokshavearrived inArgenti-na andare busypreparing for their sec-ond Test of the Rugby Championship

against the Pumas. The first order of business was an update

from Springbok doctor Craig Roberts on theavailability and fitness of the Springbok play-ers.

Roberts confirmed thatVictorMatfieldandWillemAlbertsarenotavailableuntiltheBoks’first clash against Australia in September.

“The two guys we left behind wereWillemAlberts with a hamstring injury and VictorMatfield,who’scomingbackfromakneecarti-lage problem,” said Roberts.

Pat Lambie also joined the squad for theirtrip to Argentina, but isn’t an injury concern, although he did pick up amild ankle strain inhisbriefappearancefortheSharkslastFriday.Veteran flank Juan Smith will be assessed attraining after picking up a small hamstringniggle.

The good news is that Bok captain Jean deVilliers is lookinggoodafterhisreturnfromin-jury last weekend.

The Bok doctor conceded that the trip isa difficult one and the players are beingmanaged accordingly.

“A long flight does take it out of you.The more you travel the easier it getsand our guys are really used to longhaul travel.Wedohavealotofstrate-gies in place that we implement toadapt to the jet lag,” he said.

However he said the trip east iseasier than a long flight westwards, but the players will take a few daysto get used to the time difference.

work has already been done.Meanwhile backline coach Ricardo Loub-

ser is looking forward to his backs having achance to shine after rain forced theBoks intoa conservative approach last weekend.

“Hopefully on Saturday the backs can get afewmoreopportunities thatwecaneithercre-ate or finish,” he said.

However the Springboks won’t be takingthe Argentineans lightly.

“The focus is just to win the game to startoff.Obviouslytoscorefourtrieswillbeabonus, but for us this week is all about making surewe focus on our prep and to go out for a win,”he said.

The Boks take on Argentina in Salta, kick-off is at 9.40 pm on Saturday.
