Figure 4

Moisture Seals.Moisture seals can be provided as an integral part of thecaptive screw assembly as shown in figures 8, 9 and 10.Sealing is possible under the screw head, along the screwshank, and at the panel housing interface. If needed, sealscan be placed at several locations on the same screw asshown in figure 10.

One or more of the standard Captive Screw designs onthe preceding pages will prove suitable for mostapplications. Some applications, however, will requirespecial configurations or performance. FairchildFasteners’ Field and Product Engineers specialize inworking directly with customers to resolve unique designrequirements. A variety of successful custom designs are describedin this section which were developed in response toparticular user requirements. While these demonstrate arange of design alternatives, no attempt has been madeto be all-inclusive. Creative innovation applied tochanging situations continually results in new solutions.

Figure 1 Figure 2

Knob Head Style.Figure 3 ilustrates a knob head style. The linear knurlallows a good grip. Installation and removal can beaccomplished by hand with relatively high seating andunseating torque applied with a tool through thescrewdriver slot.

Figure 3

Front Panel Use.Figure 4 illustrates decorative Plus Flush style for frontpanel application.

Tamper Proof.Tamper Proof head style prevent unauthorized access.A rounded head frustrate attempt to jimmy the screwloose; a pin in the center of the hex socket preventswrenching with a standard hex key.

Overcoming Vibration Problems.Captive screws are frequently used in areas whichexperience significant vibration and provision must bemade to prevent loosening. Captivating a lock washerunder the screw head is often an effective approach.Lock wires are avoided which degrade maintainability;reusability is high relative to the normal fifteen cycle limitfor self locking threads.

Custom Designs. (continued)

Tridair Products 7

Coping with Misalignment. It is sometimes necessary to cope with misalignmentbetween mating threads. Some captive screwassemblies offer float capability. Another approachis to use oversize holes, washers, and a large retainingring. The design as shown in figure 11 permitted a largeminimum total float of eighty thousandths of an inch(0.080).

Figure 11

Space Vehicle Application.Figure 12 illustrates a completely cutom design usedon a space vehicle. Shown in the installed position, thescrew is spring loaded for automatic retraction. An external wrenching hex configuration allows the useof box wrenches on both the head and the housing. Theheavy duty retainer nut was provided with a patch lockto prevent loosening under vibration. High performancematerials were specified for guaranteed high tensile andshear capability

Figure 12

Multiple Lead Threads.Special thread and point configurations may also beemployed to achieve various design objectives. Multiplelead threads have been commonly specified whererapid installation and removal are required. For a moredetailed discussion, please refer to page 10.

Figure 13 Standard screw thread.

Figure 14 Dual (2) lead thread.

Figure 15 Quad (4) lead thread.

Longer and Shorter than Normal Thread Lengths.Figure 16 is a design with 10-32 UNF-2A threads. Anunusually long thread, equal to approximately14 diameters was specified. Normally captive screwsare designed with thread lengths about 1 1/2 times thenominal major diameter. Wide variations from this normare possible.

Figure 16

Probing.Captive screws are often used in situations were blindprobing is required to locate the mating thread. Thisoften frustating operation can be eased by using anappropriate point style, several of which are shown infigures 17, 18 and 19.

Figure 17 Figure 18 Figure 19

A word of Caution. When initiating a special design, the user is advisedto consider typical purchase quantities. The “eco-nomic order quantity” for captive screws is approxi-mately 2500 pieces. Unit prices can rise quite rapidlyfor smaller quantities.

NOTE: Most captive screws, whether “standards” or “specials”are manufacturered to custom order. Care should be taken tocheck lead times with Fairchild Fasteners well in advance ofthe required date.

Jack-Out Damage.Destructive jack-out forces may be encountered whenremoving a panel which uses a number of captivescrews. This occurs when a screw reaches the limit ofretraction permitted by its housing before its threads arefully disengaged from the mating threads of the bottompanel. The condition is illustrated by figure 7.

Figure 3.

Screw shank jammedin bottom panel thread

Design Problems and Solutions.

Tridair Products 8

Figure 7.

Typical jack-out condition. Screw has reached full retraction.Continued application of torque will result in damage. “R” equalsscrew protrusion at full retraction.

Figure 2.

Proper thread engagement.

Although it may be impossible to anticipate all designproblems, certain dilemmas appear repeatedly. Thepurpose of this section is illustrated successfulapporaches used to resolve these “standard problems.” The terms “total float”, “top panel” and “bottom panelwill be used frequently. “Total float” means theminimum difference in diameter between thecaptive screw shank and the circle inscribed in theshank surface as it rotates through 360° in the extremeoff-center position. This is illustrated by figure 1. “Toppanel” indicates the part of the assembly to which thescrew is captived. “Bottom panel” means that part ofthe assembly distinct from the top panel to which thecaptive screw is joined in the fully installed condition.

Figure 1.

“F” dimension equals total float.

Selecting Correct Screw Lengths.Determine the distance from the topside if the top panelto the first mating thread of the bottom panel. This isto be accomplished in the fully installed condition. If gasket material is used, all calculations must be doneusing the thickness of the gasket when compressed.Add to this the required length of thread engagement. Please note that it is standard practice to allow forengagement of at least two full threads past any internalthread lock. Depending upon the location of the lock, additional engagement may be required to insurethat full strength is achieved.

Care should be taken to avoid the possibility ofspecifying a screw length/thread combinationwhich could allow the screw shank to jam in the bottompanel threads as shown in figure 3.

Selection of Correct Housing Swage Collar Lengthor Housing Retainer Nut.Selection of the correct collar length or housing retainernut is accomplished by specifying the dash number whichcorresponds to top panel thickness as tabulated on thesales drawings. If top panel thickness extends beyondthe range of tabulated values, standard components maybe utilized by adding spacers in the case of thin panels, orcounterboring in the case of thick panels. Use of spacersmay cause some degradation of ultimate shear. Whencounterboring is used, be sure to allow requiredclearances for installation tools. These conditions areillustrated in figures 4 through 6.

Figure 4.

Build up the panel thickness by using washers. This techniquemay not allow utilization of full shear strength capability provided bythe captive screw assembly.

Counterbore used to compensate for thick panels. Note clearanceallowed for swaging tool with bottom side counterbore.

Tridair Products 9

Jack-Out Damage. (continued)Damage can occur to the threads, the housing, and/orthe top panel, requiring substantial repair. See figure 8,views A and B.

Internal and/or external screw threads can be deformed.

An easy solution is achieved through the use of captivescrew designs which accomodate the full thread within thescrew housing. The fully retracting styles are describedon page 2 & 3. When other screw styles are used, adequate provision should be made for full threaddisengagement well before maximum retraction occurs. This may be achieved through relative spacing of the topand bottom panels, and/or counterbores in the top andbottom panels. Counterbores are also available in nutplates and KEENSERTS Inserts. Whatever approach orcombination of approaches is employed, the free spaceachieved must at least equal the length of screw threadprotruding below the top panel at maximum retraction.See figure 9.

Figure 9.

Proper design avoids jack-out.Counterbore in nut plate andspacing between panels combineto allow full disengagement ofthreads before maximum retractionoccurs.

Cycle Life Problems:Captive screws are usually subject to numerousinstallation and removal cycles, often using a socketwrench. Both cause unusual demands on the wrench-ing recess. Slotted and Philip’s recesses are especiallyvulnerable to cam-out through slippage or the use of aninappropriate tool as opposed to the correct bit. Forthese reasons, a hex socket recess is recommendedwhenever possible. Provided the proper depth anddiameter socket is specified relative to the thread size, the hex recess gives superior trouble-free service.Numerous installation and removal cycles can alsoimpose severe wear problems on screw threads. Thiscan become critical when using few threads tapped in athin bottom panel, or when threads are tapped in softmaterials such as aluminum. Tridair inserts areavailable for use in these situations. They provide wear-resistant threads capable of developing the full strengthpotential of the captive screw assembly. Refer to pages5 and 11. Self-locking threads are often specified inorder to prevent loosening in vibration environments. Insuch cases the cycle life is usually limited to 15 guaran-teed installations and removals per MIL-N-25027,provided appropriate materials, surface finishes, andlubricants are specified. Special designs, such asFairchild Fasteners’ new patented high cycle nut platedescribed on page 5 are available if your applicationrequires self-locking and high cycle life. ContactFairchild Fasteners for further information. It should be noted that use of a captive lock washerunder the screw head is often sufficient to provideadequate vibration resistance. This approach eliminatesthe 15-cycle limit of typical self-locking thread designs.

Design Problems and Solutions. (continued)

Tridair Products 10

Misalignment.Potenial for misalignment of the top and bottom panel isaggravated when the design dictates use of a number ofscrews in a given panel. The problem may be minimizedthrough careful use of manufacturing techniques such asclamping the top and bottom panels together and drillingall holes in one continuous operation. Such methods, however, are not always logistically and/or economicallypossible. In addition, when gasket material is used, misalignment becomes a significant factor regardless ofmanufacturing method. Compensation for misalignment may be achieved byspecifying a captive screw assembly which allows thescrew to float within its housing as shown in figure 10.Screws of this type achieve full float only after the screwthreads are extended beyond the confines of thehousing. Therefore, it is important to allow adequate freespace so that this condition is acheived. An alternate is to use floating nut plates on theunderside of the bottom panel, or floating KEENSERTSInserts installed within the bottom panel. KEENSERTSInserts and quad (4) lead nut plates used for this purposeare described on page 5. Various terms are in use to describe the magnitude ofavailable float. These can be seriously misleading. Please see the introduction to this section for a precisedefinition of the term “total float” as used here.

Captive screw assemblydesigned to allow screw to

float with in housing.

Vibration Induced Problems.Captived screws can become loosened and/or disengagedin high vibration environments Use of a self-locking threadin mating parts is recommended. A wide variety offasteners are available with this feature, some of which aredescribed on pages 5 and 11. Use of a lock washer under the screw head can providea viable alternative approach. For example, see CA29041,page 2. The screw housing itself may become loosened ordisassembled from the top panel. The use of swage typehousings will prevent this occurrence. If maintainabilityrequirements dictate use of a retainer nut type design, thenut retainers should be orderd with a patch type lockapplied per MIL-F-18240. If this is your application, pleaase contact Rexnord for further information. For comments regarding the use of multiple leadthreads in vibration environments, please see bleow.

Multiple Lead Threads.Multiple lead threads have greater helix angles whichcause large amounts of axial movement per revolution. For example, a standard 1/4-20 single lead thread screwwill advance only 0.050 of an inch in one revolution. Thesame size screw with quad (4) lead thread will advance0.200 inch, a four fold increase. Multiple lead threadsallow significant time savings over numerous installa-tions and removals in order to meet stringent militarymaintainability requirements. A variety of quad leadcaptive screws are illustrated on pages 1 and 3. Matingquad lean nut plates and KEENSERTS Inserts areavailable as shown on page 5. It is important to remember that multiple leadthreads are prone to loosening. This condition isaggravated by the use of gasket materials. Standardpractice should be to specify mating, self-locking nutplates or inserts; or a captive lock washer under thescrew head (see CA29041, page 2). Even with theseprecautions, quad lead thread are not recommended foruse in severe vibration environments. Multiple lead threads are also sensitive tomisalignment problems. Since gasket materials allowsignificant misalignment during installation, provisionsshould be made to incorporate float. Please seediscussion of misalignment on this page for examples ofhow to incorporate float in your design.
