8.1 District Superintendent Report
Les Phillips
25TH January 2015
It is indeed a privilege to report to the 20th District Assembly of the Gauteng District. Dr
Duarte, Dr Chambo, Rev Maluleka, delegates and friends I greet you all in the matchless
name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
It was a year of mountain top experience as well as Valleys. The common thread of both the
mountain tops and the valleys were the presence of the Lord. I have experienced that God
presence is not determined by the circumstances, for He is not only the God that rules but
the God that overrules.
As I said so often that one would like to play the ball on the greens so that one can play a
perfect shot......the reality is we play the ball wherever we find it and I found “ that there is
grace and mercy in our time of need.”
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was
formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was
hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good,
and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness
he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Darkness could fill us with uncertainty and fear. For in darkness we cannot see and thus
cannot move forward. Darkness does not, however, have to be the end state. For darkness
could be the very “stage” where light can shine through. And God said, “Let there be
light,” and there was light.
12 | P a g e
Listen to Isaiah 60 : 1“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises
upon you. 2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the
Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.”
For we are indeed to be the light of the world….reflecting the very light and glory of our
resurrected Savior. A light that give hope to a hurting world, a light that shines through the
darkness of hatred and narrow mindedness. A light shines through the darkness of
Xenophobia and stereo typing.
The growth on the district was from 7,367 to 7,601. We thank God for the growth, but we
must acknowledge that the harvest is plentiful. My prayer is that in the new year we will be
intentional in growing the church and that we need to trust the Lord for a 20% increase in
our membership. This is more than a numbers game but this is about fulfilling our mission
of making Christlike disciples. Each number represents a person in need of a Saviour.
Arise…shine for your light has come.
Our finances took a dip this year. Contributions to the district has dropped from R 606,933
to R519,298 This can and should be turned around. To this end we welcome Sydney
Mkhize as our new treasurer. We have started from 01 November 2014 to issue
acknowledgement of receipts. We will also, quarterly, send out statements of budgets
received and do reconciliation between money received and what the expected receipts
should have been. We will engage the churches individually and trust that together we will
achieve our full potential as Gauteng District.
We will continue on the journey of:
Intentional in charting out a clear understanding of our theological identity…..Theological
coherence
In response to a meeting held with the DS’s our General Superintendent in jurisdiction Dr
Duarte said in part:
13 | P a g e
“I trust each of you to help accomplish the mission that God has given the Church of the
Nazarene.. …We are serious about our values. We are serious about our theology……... I left
with confidence in you to help guard our church against “strange” doctrines and practices.
They are strange based on what we believe the Bible says about God and His plan of
salvation. ………”
The call is clear, we must know what we believe and further strengthen our resolve to
preach the unadulterated Word of God. We need to create space for greater theological
conversation. To this end we requested Dr’s Thomas, Anderson and Bhebhe to serve as a
panel to respond to theological questions that Nazarenes on the district might have. We
will communicate soon the mechanism that we will use to give life to this process.
Intentional in growing the church………..Passionate evangelism
We need to touch the hurting. In order to do so we must be in touch with our Lord and in
touch with those in need. We must equip ourselves to be sensitive and effective in
responding to the needs of those around us.
A workshop on Human Trafficking was held on the Gauteng District. The purpose was to
create awareness of social injustices at our door step and how as a Christian community we
need to respond to it. Gauteng district is committed to play its part to fight the scourge of
exploitation.
Gauteng district participated in a workshop with World Vision. This workshop dealt with the
issue of gender based violence and the Christian response to this issue.
We have started to reposition the Church at Regents Park as an inner city church. The
church went through a difficult period but we have now set up a ministry team in Regents
Park that will respond creatively to the complexities of this environment. There is already
14 | P a g e
visible evidence of God working and bringing about something new. Is this process
easy…….not in your life. Is it rewarding….absolutely. The God that is no respecter of person
is bringing unlikely people together and forging a new community of believers ……where
there is neither Greek nor Jew. Neither male nor female. Father make them one…….
The way God orchestrated the coming together of Via Kruis and Duncanville to bring to life
a vision that God has placed in the hearts of various people was a marvel to witness. I have
no doubt that God is about to do something special in that area of the District.
Intentional in leadership development…………Transformational leadership
The ladies are continuing building on the foundation last year. NAWOMI (Nazarene woman's
ministries) held three Gauteng ladies gatherings. The ladies is continuing leading in the
area of fostering unity among all the ladies of the Gauteng district, by wholesome fellowship
and encouraging one another. The feedback from those that attended was
heartwarming. I trust we all continue to intentionally propagate and organize ourselves to
achieve and exploit the diversity that God has blessed us with. The annual ladies
extravaganza where all ladies across the southern field got together is continuing to be a
blessing. Let us broaden our support for this initiative.
The Pastors conference was a blessing to all those that attended. The speaker was on point
and his vast experience made a great impact on us.
Purposeful Compassion
We are in the process of establishing an NGO that will serve as the Compassionate arm of
the Gauteng district and will also serve as a vehicle to affect the work of NCM. We held two
meetings with all interested parties. An open invitation was send to all churches to jointly
discuss and shape the vehicle to be the conduit for compassionate ministries. I want thank
those that responded to the call. As a result of this I am proud to announce that the name
15 | P a g e
NTWANO HOLISTIC CARE CENTRE NPC has been reserved by the Companies Registrar. All
documentation and formalities has been done and we now await final confirmation of
registration. “We confirm that we have finalised and have lodged the company
documentation with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission for registration.”
This year we will strengthen NTWANO HOLISTIC CARE CENTRE NPC and make is fully
operational. ….Let us rise and shine…..
Other activities included a workshop with the global SDMI director, Dr Woody Stevens, and
what a blessing it was.
The young Pastors kids were treated with entertainment at a Christmas Party. We want to
thank the pastors & churches that participated and contributed gifts to the kids. This excited
the kids……..
We had our planning meeting with the district leadership where we charted the plans going
forward. The above report reflects some of the directions given in this meeting.
All of the above will fail if we do not under girth it with prayer. “In vain thus the watchmen
watch if God does not watch. In vain does the builder build if God does not build.”
At the pastoral conference we undertook to make prayer our priority. We agreed to pray
for one another and to call on all churches to prayer for the district and its leadership every
first Sunday of the month.
The Zone leaders serve and act as mandated by the DS. I want thank them for representing
the District leadership well. We need to continue to foster unity and to strengthen the
District. We all pursue one vision and therefore the Zones need to continue ensure that the
16 | P a g e
District agenda is realised. It is one district and thus one common focus. Where there are
any gaps we endeavour to close it this coming year so that we all sing from the same hymn
sheet.
I am once again humbled and privileged that I am surrounded by the quality of leadership
within the church. To the advisory board, thank you for your support and wise counsel. I am
stronger today because of your honest and thoughtful contributions. The reports that I gave
and the feedback given during these meetings was extremely valuable and certainly kept me
going. The various district boards and auxillary leaders for your contributions and hard work
that you have put in this year.
Thank you, Thandi, Thank you Joycelyn for your support and above all thank you to our
Heavenly Father that is Faithfull and whose mercies are new every morning.
Isaiah 60 : 1“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon
you. 2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord
rises upon you and his glory appears over you.
Let us arise, let us shine so that the dark clouds are lifted and Gods glory can be seen.
Respectfully submitted…………on behalf of the Gauteng District

8.3 SDMI
Sunday school and Discipleship Ministry International
Dr Duarte, Dr F. Chambo, Rev. L. Phillips, delegates and friends “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up”. (Deuteronomy 6:5-7). “The ministries for children never end. Kids and their families keep coming, and the need for making them a priority is relentless. Why must we keep pursuing the mission of discipling children? Because Jesus and the power of the Good News means changed lives. Picture the faces of the kids you know. Some you met for the first time at VBS; others you’ve known since they were born. Each child comes with his or her own story. Some are fighting illness in their family; some are grieving over the loss of a loved one; some are reeling from the impact of a home split apart by divorce. These precious children desperately need to know Jesus and His love. Every Sunday morning, they arrive with unspoken stories, seeking help and hope from an adult who can show them the way to Jesus. You are a valuable tool God can use to help them understand how He is at work in their lives. All over the world God is using faithful men and women just like you to lead children to Jesus and His transforming grace. In the midst of loss and hopelessness, God’s grace completes thestory, filling a child with joy and peace. Your commitment to invest in these kids is not only powerful in their lives but becomes an eternal investment in the Kingdom of God. For Jesus said, “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42).Each week thousands of kids meet Jesus in Sunday school, children’s church, Caravan, and other discipleship groups. Thank you for the investment you are making in seeing Jesus change lives.” Global SDMI Director,Dr.Woodie J. Stevens
A period came to an end. It is with a thankful heart and with great joy that I look back at the past 14 years. Being part for the committee as a zone leader for 8 years and then as District Sunday school Superintendent for 6 years, I thank our Heavenly Father for what He has allowed in my life. I have been shaped, I have been taught, I have been developed. I have made friends for life and built strong relations cross cultural. Most of all, I have been fortunate to attend the General Convention in Indianapolis in 2013 which surely was the highlight on this journey and there I met our Global SDMI director, Dr. Woody Stevens, in person.
19 | P a g e

Peter Naidoo – Southern Zone; Nellie Tshabalala – Western Zone; ThokoDlamini and NicoGiwi (replacement) – Soweto Zone;TebogoMokebe and Jonathan Williams (replacement) – Eastern Zone and our District Bible quiz master, Elaine Hamilton. For the people who mentor me during these years, I humbly thank you for your patience, wisdom and advice. Themes that were emphasized during these periods: 2009-2010: To be much much more. 2011-2012: Three words: Knowing what, growing with whom and glowing where. 2013-2014: “Go…make disciples”. Thank you for having the opportunity to lead the Sunday school for the past six years where I was able to use the gifts I received from God of organization, teaching and shepherding. I want to thank my husband for the years he travelled with me. Most of all I want to thank our heavenly Father who are my Foundation and my Rock. In my final report this year I want to share the SDMI calendar and events with you of 2014. • 8 March - Superintendents and teachers training held at Cornerstone COTN. Topics that
were discussed: The A-Z of children’s ministry; Am I keeping up with the time; Identifying gifts of children; Creatively prepare a lesson, Praise and worship, How do I lead a child to God, Puppets and Quizzing.
• 10 May – District Prayer meeting held at Lenasia COTN. • 19-21 Sep – District Junior Camp at Emmanuel Park, attendance 101. The theme for the
camp was. “Jesus did, so can I”. This camp was presented successfully for the fourth year.
• 25 Oct – District Final Junior Bible Quiz held at Cornerstone COTN. The trophies went to Roodepoort zone – 1st place, Soweto – 2nd place and Western zone – 3rd place. What an excitement it is when the zone teams get together for the District finals. The new book for 2015 is Exodus and I want to encourage the Sunday school Superintendents who never take part in Bible quizzing to take up the challenge this year. Use the tool of quizzing to teach the children the Word of God.

This year we add to our calendar a meeting with Dr. Woody Stevens, our global SDMI Director. SDMI zone leaders, some pastors and district board members attended this meeting and were greatly inspired with Dr. Stevens humbleness and devotion to Christ Jesus. The following Sunday schools paid their budgets for this year: Meadowlands East, Ikageng-Potchefstroom, Protea South, J. Mosweu, Lenasia, Welverdiend, Agape-Potchefstroom, Agape-Rustenburg, Noordgesig, Hope for life. To all who made a payment towards the District Sunday school account (budget), I want to thank you sincerely, for you have made it possible for us to do what we had to do during this year. Expenses that we had this year include the following: Dr. Woody Stevens - R1,093.57 District Final quizzing - R1,721.75 Convention - R2,752.65 Travelling expenses - R 500.00 The newly elected District Sunday School board for 2015-2016 is: Nico Giwi – District Sunday school Superintendent Mimi Schoeman – Roodepoort Zone Leonard Tshabalala – Western Zone Nozipho Mdunge – Soweto Zone Jonathan Williams – East Rand Zone May the Lord bless you and keep you on this journey, may the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you, and may the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. My journey to grow in faith is found in 2 Peter 1:5-8,10. “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue, knowledge, to knowledge self-control, so self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble”. Someone once showed you Jesus’ love…will you be that someone to somebody else? Respectfully submitted Rozèlle Erasmus District SDMI Superintendent

8.4 Report of the District NMI President “Jesus Christ did not die for a percentage, but for the whole world”, said NMI Global Director, Dr Daniel Ketchum. He did not die for merely another million, but for all 7.2 billion people presently on earth. Millions more need to be reached! The vision is not too big but too small. More than two billion people on the planet do not have a church within walking distance or even one verse of Scripture to read. The Church needs all hands on deck to save the lost. A church that is not winning lost people to Jesus is lost herself. As we help to finish the Great Commission, we cannot care who gets the credit, as long as God gets the glory. We must move from “me” to “we” so that “they” will hear about “Him.” NMI is not about egos and more logos, but about souls and more souls! We realize collectively that proclaiming the Gospel via crusades, literature, compassion, satellite, radio, or the Internet will never complete the Great Commission. Local mission leaders provide Gospel bridges to individual souls who need Jesus.
NMI needs everybody. We don‘t need elbows jostling for position. We need hands, hearts, and heads serving for the greater good. We can do more with less by multiplying our efforts through working together. It is not just about leadership, but relationship. THE PAST YEAR: 2014 was not our best year. In Rustenburg our attention was focused on the strike that dragged on for half the year. Many a good goal dwindled to a forgotten thought, in the face of desperate survival. Later the unexpected realization came that it was not just the Platinum Belt that was being effected by the strike, as reports from the Eastern Cape emerged of people facing dire situations down there, as husbands usually earning money by working on the mines, now being unable to sustain their families. From Vanderbijlpark we heard of businesses closing down, as their contracts was cancelled. Factories on the Eastrand were affected and job-losses followed. The strike was hardly over, when the general elections disrupted our lives, and also our churches. Then Ebola came up, and the Israel-Palestine conflict that brought large groups of people onto the streets, campaigning for or against Israel etc. In the end, it really seemed like all these things STOLE our collective focus and attention from that which is REALLY important! And I say that in shame. At the previous NMI Convention, we set out to PRAY more and focus on Work and Witness and outreaches. I'm not sure that we really achieved our goals. The reports that I received, show that there WAS some attention given, but sadly I have to say that I don't think we came close to where we wanted to be. Challenges regarding communication between District Council and local churches, also contributed to a lack of momentum.
22 | P a g e
I do however praise the Lord for local churches that DID what they could to enhance the Kingdom! Half a dozen churches did respond to our call to help with maintenance at NTC and GNCC in anticipation of the Global Theology Conference that was hosted there. Thank you so very much! To so many churches that was faithful in receiving NMI Offerings, paying their WEF-budgets and participated in the various focus-areas of NMI, a big big salute. You are our heroes today. NMI IS CELEBRATING 100 YEARS: But God is a God of second chances. It is a new year, and together we WILL BE MOVING FORWARD, to expand and resource God’s mission worldwide.
Our Lord challenges us to become part of something bigger than ourselves. We urge NMI Presidents in local churches to put on the whole armor of God, not to watch it shine in the polished mirrors of fellowship halls. Some day soon the King of the Universe will descend through eternity into time, walking on clouds, the diadem of glory on His head, and a rainbow of victory wrapped around His shoulders. But in heaven, we can no longer win souls. There and then, we will be unable to accomplish the goal for which Jesus died. Now is the time. Today is the day.
All of heaven’s hosts are cheering us on. We need to be motivated about what motivates heaven. How many souls will you be responsible for through your local church in your community? We can achieve more together than we ever could alone by synergizing our efforts to lift up our Lord! We have a legacy of 100 years of Soulwinning, supporting the Great Commission. Shall those that come behind us, find us faithful? We ask each of of local churches, to select one of more than 1,400 initiatives (projects) generated by regional and ministry partners. The completion date is October 2015. The actual date of the NMI 100th Anniversary is 8 October 2015. Local Presidents, please send a photo and summary of the initiative you complete. We can help you tell the exciting story! Your experiences will encourage others! A comprehensive list of the 1400 projects you can choose from, can be found on nmi.nazarene.org or a summary in the current issue of our Gauteng District Newsletter. For our 50th NMI Anniversary, the Global Nazarenes raised $150,000 to construct a hospital in Papua New Guinea. For our 75th NMI Anniversary, $885,484 was raised for evangelism in Hong Kong/Chinese communities worldwide. For our 90th NMI Anniversary, a awesome $2.5 million was given for "Books for Pastors—Tools for Ministry". As each of our 28,000 Nazarene churches across the globe, completes an NMI 100th Anniversary initiative, investments could total more than US$4 million!! This will be the
23 | P a g e
largest NMI Anniversary investment in Nazarene history. And your local church should be part of that! IN CLOSING: As we elect a new District NMI President and Council, I really hope and pray that 2015 will be a much better year that 2014. May God help us to REALLY keep the main thing the main thin – to keep priority number one, our priority number one. NMI needs everybody. We don‘t need elbows jostling for position. We need hands, hearts, and heads serving for the greater good. Let’s make 2015 count. Respectfully submitted, Rev DAWIE M DE KOKER District NMI President
8.5 NYI Gauteng District – President`s Report
Dear General Superintendent, Rev. Les Phillips, delegates and friends,
I greet you in the Name above all names, the Name of Jesus – our Lord and King.
This report, is on a personal level, a very memorable report for me, as it will be the last one I will give as your Gauteng NYI President. This past year has been a very busy year for most of us and as with many of you - God entrusted me with a number of responsibilities, ministries and new ventures to take care of. As 2014 was the year for the quadrennial NYI, SDMI and NMI elections, I earnestly prayed to ask God`s guidance for my role at the Gauteng NYI. After careful consideration and waiting on the Lord, I decided to shift focus to new opportunities in my ministry as Youth Pastor in Rustenburg and therefore I didn`t avail myself for re-election.
Therefore I want to congratulate Lindley April as our NEWLY elected Gauteng NYI President – I believe that God is smiling over this, and we pray that God will use and bless you during this new chapter of your ministry. It`s an exciting time to build God`s Kingdom and to serve Him in this beautiful country of ours. In 2014 it blew me away to see how Holy Spirit is simultaneously raising up churches to go back to the basics: DISCIPLE-MAKING. Globally and throughout different denominations, Holy Spirit is working up a movement of intentional one-on-one disciple-making. God never called us to make churches or groups or even believers, but disciples. God makes believers. We make disciples. This past year the prayer of my heart was for God to help us as a district to become that kind of church. That kind of youth ministires, that kind of NYI.
Christian maturity is NOT measured by how many discipleship classes you attended, how many books you`ve read or even the SIZE of you ministry. It`s all about what KIND of
24 | P a g e
disciples you are making and producing. Disciple-making is the name of the game. If the NYI isn`t making disciples of the youths in our churches and ministries – then we aren`t doing what God called us to. As youth-experts we sometimes over emphasize the bells & whistles, the icebreakers, the fun, the games, the events. Which IS necessary and good things. BUT if those things do not move us forward in making disciples of our teens and youth, we are missing the mark.
But that is not where it ends. It cannot end with “making disciples”. Disciple-making must be done in such a fashion that we do not only produce young disciples, but young DISCIPLE-MAKERS. We are only living God`s dream when our ministries are producing disciple-makers. I believe that`s the heart of God for our NYI and our youth ministries. When we look at the past year we should ask ourselves – how many, and what quality disciple-makers did we make? Praise God for all the disciple-making stories of 2014! Many of our local NYI ministries have made a huge impact for the kingdom of God – and can testify to a collage of changed lives in their respective communities!
According to the “feedback” from the Local church NYI President`s reports, the NYI is growing from all over the district. I`m glad to announce that (according to the reports), we experienced growth in overall NYI membership and youth participation last year. There has been various Zonal council meetings, camps and activities, like the very blessed and successful Soweto-zone and Western-Southern zone camps. Youth festivals and rallies were held on the Soweto and Western zones, overall attended by hundreds of teens. Various churches reported about their bible discussion meetings, discipleship classes, bible study sessions and other discipleship programs. There has also been a number of outreach programs to prisons, hospitals, orphanages and old age homes.
We also had a very blessed NYI, SDMI,NMI combined Convention at the end of last year – which took place at Ennerdale Church of the Nazarene and where we were challenged to become disciplemakers like Barnabas.
I want to thank every Youth Pastor, leader and NYI president for your commitment, endurance and passion to the youth of your communities – it has been an honour working with you, and serving you. As I always said – when the local church works right, the district works right!
Blessings,
Rev. Dawie van Schoor NYI President 2010-2014

District Superintendent Report: Rev L Phillips (Pg. 10 – 15) Report Received and Accepted
Question posed by Rev. Smith regarding zones/leadership and the growth within the Ekurhuleni District
1. Sr. Letsoalo regarding growth and percentages put in perspective on the DS report 2. Rev. Douman posed a question regarding the unassigned and retired elders
Rev. Phillips responded to all questions posed:
1. The District leadership works as a collective, so when the Zone Leader visits local churches, he acts on behalf of the DS. Where Churches require the DS to visit, they should contact the District office
2. This will be considered as it could make the report easier to read 3. This is a concern to the District Office as there are a number of Churches who do not
have assigned pastors. This will be receiving attention this year.
Sr. Jocelyn applauded by the Assembly
Nominating Committees Report: Rev. Timothy Mogorosi (Pg. 27 – 28) Report Received and Accepted
• Suggestion by delegate to contact nominees prior to District Assembly to confirm nomination
• Rev. Daphne Mathebula withdrew from the nomination of credentials board • Pastor Phil suggested more women leadership to feature within the district • Sr Betty requested clarity on Rev.
