ENG SOC E-BALLWelcome back to a brand new year everyone! 2010 has been a great year for the Engineering Society, it being the first year in the college for decades, the society has brought you speakers from many industries as well as social events. The Society boasts over 300 members and is open for anyone to join it. It’s the largest society in GMIT and for 2011 we plan to make it even bigger and better! The first event of 2011 is by far the most anticipated and will be held on the 27th of January in the Galway Bay Hotel at 7.30pm. It is of course... “The e-ball”

The e-ball will consist of a four course multiple helping meal preceded by a chocolate fondue reception. It will have entertainment from the much loved band “Unstable” as well as DJ Fergal Darcy, both of whom will guarantee a fantastic night. See www.gmitsu.ie for details of our campaigns throughout 2011.

Hey guys…Welcome back for the start of the second semester, and a Happy New Year to you all!! Hopefully 2011 will be a good one for GMIT students, starting off with the exam results on the 31st of this month.

We’ve got a lot of good stuff to look forward to in to a short space of time this semester, including RAG Week, SHAG Week and Paddy’s Day, not to mention the SU elections!!!

It’s going to be a busy period in terms of welfare campaigns as well, kicking off with the first ever SU campaign focused on careers, economy, finance, and entrepreneurship next week starting the 25th.

Given the current economic climate and the difficulties students and graduates are having in terms of finding work and with their finances, I feel it is important we put more focus on this area.

I would encourage all students, particularly those in their final years, to attend as many of the talks which will be taking place as possible, and also to keep an eye out for the GMITSU Student Finance Guide.

On a national level, not only will we be faced with the harshest Budget ever seen in this country over this academic year, but we’ll also soon be seeing a general election.

At the beginning of February we’ll be continuing to register students to vote here on campus, along with informing students as best we can as to each party’s stance on education and issues relevant to students.

Finally, I’d encourage you all to get involved with your Student Union this semester, feel free to come to myself or Colin with any problems you may have, big or small, and I wish ye better luck at keeping your New Year’s Resolutions than me!!

A married couple in their early 60s was celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant. Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table.

She said, ‘For being such an exemplary married couple and for being loving to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.’ The wife answered, ‘Oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband. The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! - two tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.

The husband thought for a moment: ‘Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again. I’m sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me. The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish. So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!...the husband became 92 years old.

The moral of this story: Men who are ungrateful bastards should remember fairies are female...

There is a factory in Northern Minnesota which makes the Tickle Me Elmo toys. The toy laughs when you tickle it under the arms.

Well, Lena is hired at The Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for her first day promptly at 8:00 am.

The next day at 8:45 am there is a knock at the Personnel Manager’s door. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the new employee.

He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing up, putting the entire production line behind schedule.

The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2 men march down to the factory floor. When they get there the line is so backed up that there are Tickle Me Elmo’s all over the factory floor and they’re really beginning to pile up.

At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle Me Elmo’s. She has a roll of plush Red fabric and a huge bag of small marbles.

The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric, wraps it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little package between Elmo’s legs.

The Personnel Manager bursts into laughter. After several minutes of hysterics he pulls himself together and approaches Lena .

‘I’m sorry,’ he says to her, barely able to keep a straight face, ‘but I think you misunderstood the instructions I gave you yesterday...’

‘Your job is to give Elmo two test tickles’.

suGMIT CRICKET WIN INTERVARSITIES TOURNAMENTIrish Universities Indoor Cricket Championships 2011GMIT Cricket Club showed tremendous resolve to gain the narrowest of victories over University of Ulster Jordanstown (UUJ) at the Irish University Cricket Association (IUCA) Indoor Cricket Varsities on Sunday 16th January held at the National University of Ireland, Galway. GMIT waited until the last ball to claim this thrilling contest, winning by 3 runs.

Having gone unbeaten throughout the group stage against SIT, UCD and DBS, GMIT proceeded to the semi final stage where they put in a marvellous display to defeat NUI Galway. This match proved to be a tight affair. GMIT played first and scored 84 all out but the team managed to hold NUIG to 72 runs all out. The final moments were crucial in that there were only 2 mins were left when the match finished.

The final between GMIT and UUJ was even closer. GMIT played first and scored 143/7 Wkts, whilst UUJ managed 140/3 Wkts. UUJ had needed 11 runs in the last over but Danish Ali (Captain) bowled well, allowing GMIT to win by just 3 runs.

Iliff Sumit was a standout player for GMIT claiming 16 wickets over the course of the tournament. This feat was only surpassed by bowler of the tournament, Mitul Galav (NUIG) who took 17 wickets. The combination of Iliff Sumit and player of the tournament, Danish Ali, proved too much for the the other teams in the end.

Speaking after the event Iliff Sumit said “All the boys did very well to reach to final. There was a time in the final match when the match nearly slipped out of hands but Saquib Hussian stood tall at the crease and helped us to reach the total of 140 runs in 15 overs. It was a great honour playing against UUJ. The tournament was brilliantly organised by NUIG. Thanks a million to the NUIG guys”.

-----------------------

GMIT cricket club was founded about five years ago, but had never before won a tournament, coming closest when finishing runners-up in the Summer 2010 outdoor tournament. By their own admission, the team learned from their mistakes over the years, overcoming their deficiencies which lead the team to win the Indoor Intervarsities trophy.

GMIT Cricket takes great pride in having gone through this entire tournament unbeaten, and to do this against players who are in the current Irish international U-19 cricket team is an achievement to be applauded.

Important health announcement for all students

There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two

doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine.

Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be

transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing).

This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in

adult males.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES:

If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREEIf you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one

won’t do you any harm.

The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue. However; we do not have your MMR records,

or the capacity to deal with all students.

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR OWN GP

MUMPSImportant health announcement

for all studentsThere has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges.

This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine.
