2008-09 Swimming & Diving

Year in Review: 2007-08TEXAS PLACES 14th AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPBehind three All-America diving finishes and an All-American swim from Susana Escobar in the 500 freestyle, Texas placed 14th with 87 points at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Junior diver Kathryn Kelly enjoyed a break-through NCAA meet with All-America showings in the one- and three-meter springboard events. Kelly placed third in the three-meter event with 353.15 points and took fourth in the one-meter event with 308.65 points. The Big 12 named Kelly as its Women’s Diver of the Year following those performances. Escobar earned her first individual All-America honor with a personal-best swim of 4:40.63 in the 500 freestyle to take seventh place in the event. She added a 10th-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle.

TEXAS TAKES SECOND AT BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPTexas placed second at the Big 12 Championship held Feb. 27-March 1 in Austin, as the Longhorns tallied 748 points. Susana Escobar captured UT’s lone conference swimming title, taking the 1,650 freestyle in 16:18.86, a new personal best. Mary Yarrison captured her fourth and fifth Big 12 div-ing titles by sweeping the springboard events for a second consecutive year.

KELLY, YARRISON NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAM Junior diver Kathryn Kelly and senior diver Mary Yarrison were selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team in a vote conducted

by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Kelly was voted to the 15-member second team in the university at-large division, while Yarrison was selected to the 15-member third team. The university at-large division includes NCAA Division I programs in the sports of swim-ming and diving, bowling, rowing, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, ten-nis and water polo. Kelly is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first-team selection and a member of the Big 12

Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Kelly, who shared team Academic MVP honors with Yarrison, held a 3.84 GPA in public relations. She became the 15th UT women’s swimmer or diver to earn Academic All-America honors. Yarrison ended her UT career as a two-time All-American and two-time honorable mention All-American. Yarrison placed second in the one-meter event and ninth in the three-meter event at the 2008 NCAA Championship. A 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second-team member, Yarrison joined Texas Exes Kelly Jenkins and Alisa Schuknecht (swimming and diving), Nikki Cockrell (softball) and Jamie Carey (basketball) as the only women in the history of UT athletics to earn two selec-tions to the Academic All-America Team.

BIG 12 HONORS LONGHORNS QUARTETThe Big 12 Conference honored four Longhorns during the course of the season as its Big 12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week. Mary Yarrison was tabbed the league’s diver of the week on Dec. 12 for her performances at the Texas Invitational and again on Feb. 6 for her showing at Arizona. Hee-Jin Chang earned swimmer of the week hon-ors on Dec. 12 after scoring her two NCAA auto-matic-qualifying marks at the Texas Invitational. Susana Escobar earned the same honor on Jan. 23 after completing a solid pair of meets against Auburn and Georgia. Junior diver Kathryn Kelly also was recognized on Jan. 23 for her Auburn and Georgia performances.

UT LANDS EIGHT ON ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 TEAMThe University of Texas women’s swimming and diving team landed eight student-athletes on the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Team. Among the Longhorns’ selections was junior diver Kathryn Kelly, who earned a 4.0 GPA in public relations in the last two semesters. Joining Kelly on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team was sophomore Alex Basso, junior Hee-Jin Chang, senior Macie Garrett, senior Delia Huang, junior Rebecca Orr, senior Lindsay Voyles and senior diver Mary Yarrison. Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the Academic All-Big 12 wom-en’s swimming and diving team had 61 first-team recipients and 15 student-athletes on the second team.

Jill Sterkel is one of the most decorated swimmers in UT history. A four-time Olympian, 27-time

All-American and 11-time individual national champion, Sterkel earned the 1981 Broderick Cup

National Female Athlete of the Year award and was inducted into the UT Women’s

Athletics Hall of Honor in 2000.

Whitney Hedgepeth earned two gold medals at the 1991 Pan Pacifics as well as two golds, a silver and

a bronze at the 1993 World University Games.
