First of all Sood Sabha, Chandigarh wishes all it’s brethren and their

families a very happy and prosperous New year 2017. When we

look back - one has to acknowledge that Sood Sabha Chandigarh has

rendered an excellent and outstanding service for the community in

the most congenial and healthy environment . The human mind can

do anything but one needs strength, self belief, willpower and

confidence.

thFollowing the tradition, Sood Sabha organized 54 SOOD MILAN th

DIVAS on 18 December 2016 at Sood Bhawan, Panchkula. The

added attraction of this year function was arranging sports meet for

children after a gap of many years. The children and their parents

showed great enthusiasm and appreciated the effort. The day was

full of fun and frolic as every one gets an opportunity to meet each

other on one platform, at least once a year.

The managing force behind the Divas was the dynamic youngsters,

the executive members of the Sood Sabha, who are excelling well

with innovative ideas. If we harness the intelligence of youth

properly for a genuine cause, the youth of the biradari under the

guidance of elders will never shirk the responsibility towards

community.

Our quarterly magazine, Sood Sandesh is an important source of

communication which keeps us connected to other Sabhas and to

highlight various activities. We always tries to give good coverage

also but are not getting support in this regard. Sood Sabha

Chandigarh will appreciate if some good material, articles are being

sent to us for publication in the house magazine.

SOOD MILAN DIVAS 2016

th. 54 Sood Milan Divas was organized by Sood

thSabha Chandigarh on December 18 2016 at Sood

Bhawan Panchkula.

The Chief Guest for this year's function was

Mr Arun Sood former Mayor of Chandigarh. He was

kind enough to spare time from his awfully busy

schedule along with his wife to grace the occasion

Municipal Corporation elections which were being held on the same day.

The main attraction for this year's Milan Divas were various sports

events held and a good number of children participated in them. Various

competition like "On the Spot Painting", "Fancy Dress", "Sood

Prince/Princess" and Cultural programme also had a good response.

The President of Sood Sabha Chandigarh Sh. Ashwani Doeger

welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignatories representing various

Sood Sabhas. Our Secretary Sh. Shashi B Sud apprised the General

audience about the various activities being taken up by the Sabha for the

welfare of the society.

I, take this opportunity to thank each and every member of the

organizing committee of the sabha from the core of our heart for their co-

operation and making this yearly event “Sood Milan Divas” a grand

success.

My special thanks to Shri Sudhir Sood, Co-ordinator, Sood Milan

Divas who under took all the responsibility on my behalf in my absence.

It was a moment of great honour for me to be the Chief th

Guest on the occasion of 54 SOOD MILAN DIVAS on th18 December, 2016 at Sood Bhawan, Sector 10,

Panchkula.

Our biradari has always recognized the significance

of celebrating various fairs & festivals collectively. I

think, the basic purpose behind this is to rejoice the

joyous atmosphere and develop brotherly feelings. Sood Sabha

organizes Sood Milan Divas every year which has now become an

important event for Sood families residing in and around Chandigarh-

Mohali and Panchkula.

Sood Sabha is actively engaged in the welfare of its brethren by

providing quality health care services like Diagonastic Laboratory,

Homeopathic and Allopathic Dispensaries along with Physiotherapy

Centers at both the Bhawans. It was nice to see that in the various

competitions held during Sood Milan Divas, children participated

actively. Sood Sabha honoured Senior Biradari members besides

honouring meritorious students for their achievements in various fields. I

highly appreciate the effort of Sood Sabha.

Finally, I coney my thanks to all the organisers and Members of the Sabha

for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this annual Milan Divas and

also for making this event a memorable one. I would like to offer my

services in whatever manner to the Sood Sabha at any point of time.

Shri Kulwant Rai Sood lef t for his heavenly thabode on 20 December, 2016. He was hale and

hear t y when he at tended Sood Bhawan, thPanchkula on 19 December morning but lef t us

shocked and grief stricken when he breathed his

last the very next day. This was an irreparable loss

not only for us at the Sood Sabha but for the entire

Sood Biradari.

Late Shri Kulwant Rai Sood was born at Tapa Mandi in Punjab thon 6 December, 1938. He had his early education at Tapa and

graduated from Punjab University. His family had a business of

contractors and Brick owners. He started his career with Punjab

State Electricity Board in the year 1959 and served Pfizer Ltd. for

thir ty three years. In January, 1965, he was married to

Mrs. Sudershan Sood, a very humble, kind hearted and a God

fearing lady.

Shri Kulwant Rai joined Sood Sabha, Chandigarh in 1976 to

serve the Sood Biradari and also the society. He held various senior

positions in the Sabha and remained President for more than ten

years. He was also the founder member of Sood Sewa Bhawan Trust

where he served as Finance Secretary till his end. He was also

closely associated with the senior citizen council, Panchkula, SOS

children’s village Panchkula unit along with some other Socio-

Religious organisations. He is survived by two sons and two

daughters.

Sood Sabha Chandigarh prays to the almighty to grant peace

to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear

this loss.

Has the Internet Tolled the Death Knell of Family Life?

When we talk about internet, there is a definite

belief we have instilled in our minds that it is responsible

for all the negative things that are happening in the world

today. Irony is people today blame the internet for the

lower intelligence level of children when internet is the

reason, we are more intelligent today. If I had to give my

views on internet, I am of the belief that internet is the unit

which is still holding families together in today’s busy world. WhatsApp,

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, BBN and many more applications have made

the world come closer. In earlier times, there were not many instances when

we wished our family members good morning or good night when the day

began or ended, respectively. Today, there are family groups which have been

made on WhatsApp through which the communication among many family

members have increased amazingly! For mother whose child lives

somewhere where she cannot go and visit regularly, video chatting has

become the reason of sharing much stronger bond. Yet, we blame internet for

breaking families.

For me, internet has transformed the video world into a reality. It has

transformed the mirrors of our lives into windows. When we look outside

today, we do not only see ourselves but we see a world, a world comprising of

new people, our friends, our family and in short, everyone.

Luckily, we have internet in our mobile phones today. It is the only

thing keeping our relationship together when we are separated by our loved

ones through time and distance. To sum it up, it is our parents who are doing a

right thing by teaching us the right usage of such an amazing invention of

SCIENCE.

BEREAVEMENT Shri C.L. Batra, Manager at Sood Bhawan, Panchkula, left for

his heavenly abode on 7th January, 2017. He suffered a cardiac arrest

attack on the evening of 28th December, 2016.

Shri Batra joined Sood Bhawan, Panchkula in January, 2006

after his retirement as Assistant Post Master from Sector-17,

Chandigarh post office. His hard work with great zeal and dedication to

the Sabha had won admiration not only from the Sood sabha but also

from the public.

May his soul rest in peace.

Minerals Versus Life Can you imagine Universe without minerals ? The answer is No. The Earth on which we dwell to-day is evolved from dozens of basic substances, including minerals. Of more than 100 elements known to mankind in nature only 4 (Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon and Nitrogen) make up for 96% of our body, and minerals make the remaining 4%, but lack of just one of them makes life miserable.

Minerals not only precedes life but as a matter of fact make life possible. As a land dweller, our main link with minerals is through a diet of plants which extract minerals from soil over which they grow. Human body requires large amount of some minerals and only traces of others. e. g. few milligrams of zinc is essential compared to several hundred milligrams of calcium. The minerals essential to health in high or large amount like calcium, phosphorous, potassium, sulphur, sodium, chlorine and magnesium are called macro-minerals.

Carbon is the most versatile element in the present day world (cradle of life). Carbon combining with number of other elements forms numerous substances. Its combination with sister elements like oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen and other elements form the nutrients for life i.e. proteins, fats, vitamins and carbohydrates.

Minerals are quite different from vitamins, but they have healthy working relationship. Minerals are catalytic for healthy environment in which body using vitamins , proteins, carbohydrates and fats can grow, function and resurrects itself. e.g. zinc felicitates release of vitamin A from liver. Some vitamins contain minerals too like Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) crucial to heart function, contains sulphur. Some are helpmates to each other like calcium absorption is impossible without vitamin D.

At present, the way agriculture is being developed and the products processed, have resulted in alteration of availability of minerals which are so essential for life, thus creating wide spread health problems. The lack of trace elements in diets are observed especially in the areas where trend is more towards the refined and processed food. This asks for intake of drugs which has far reaching side effects (good for pharmaceutical industry). Another factor responsible for bad health is pollution, which pumps in harmful minerals in to our system. Not all the minerals are beneficial for body. Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury are the worst pollutants. They are considered to be toxic elements and their excess intake can cause serious problems. Lead poisoning results in brain and nerve effect, also blood and digestive system are affected, Cadmium can cause pneumonia and lung damage, Mercury can be responsible for bleeding gums, loose teeth and lack of co-ordination. Even minerals required for good health, taken in greater quantity can upset the balance in the body. e.g. potassium requirement for body for a day if taken in single doze can prove to be harmful.

In the present day environment, we are in fact getting less of minerals we need and more of those which we do not need. As a matter of fact restoring mineral balance in our fragile eco-system, we may have to go beyond physical health to emotional and intellectual health.
