OverviewSoochow University was established by Missionaries of the Methodist Church in 1900 at Suzhou (formerly spelled Soochow), making it China’s first western-style university. Re-established in Taiwan in 1951, it became the first private university on the island. To live up to its motto, “Unto a full grown man,” Soochow University strives to provide quality teaching, and is determined to do its absolute best to produce mature graduates with creative and practical abilities.
Soochow University currently consists of two campuses. The Waishuanghsi Campus is located in suburban Taipei with picturesque scenery near the National Palace Museum. The Downtown Campus is close to the political and financial hub of Taipei city.
Both campuses are easily accessible by public transportation with abundant resources for teaching and researching. With the impressive facilities and efficient administration, Soochow University offers the best possible teaching and learning environment for students and faculty members as well. Soochow University remains the only university in Taiwan receiving more than NT$100 million of annual grants from the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Excellence Projects for six consecutive years.

Social SciencesThe School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences was established in 1970 to develop humanity studies and practical service to society.
In terms of teaching and research, each department shares the following common features:
1. A strong emphasis on cultivating and building integrity in a liberal, democratic atmosphere.
2. A focus on the exchanges and researches on “people and society” and other issues related to contemporary life.
3. A stress on cross-discipline teaching, cooperation, and research activities.
4. To establish and utilize the teaching platforms, such as Historical Documents of Ming and Ching Dynasties, Teaching and Research of Philosophy, and GIS (Geographic Information System) Platform.
In the future, the school will consolidate teaching and learning, and further expand the master’s and doctoral programs to establish an integrated education system. The School will also coordinate curricula across departments, develop platforms to support teaching, facilitate academic exchanges and joint research programs domestically and internationally, and cultivate professionals for the creative industry.

and CulturesThe School of Foreign Languages and Cultures was established in 1984, with the goal to develop students’ language proficiency and understanding of world cultures. The School’s Language Teaching and Learning Center is in charge of general English classes, and promoting selflearning atmosphere on campus.
In terms of teaching and research, each department shares the following features:
1. Enhancing students’ language comprehension and application.
2. Building translation and interpretation skills.
3. Boosting teaching and learning efficiency through class observations and workshops.
4. Holding international conferences and publishing “Soochow Journal of Foreign Languages and Cultures” and “Japanese Language Education Study”.

The School of Science was established in 1969 with the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry. The Department of Microbiology and the Department of Psychology joined the school later on.
In terms of teaching and research, each department shares the following features:
1. A stress on both the theory and practice. Experiments and internship are carried out in small groups and classes.
2. A focus on information and multi-media assisted courses so as to elevate teaching and learning efficiency.
3. Developing general science literacy and general science courses as its brand programs.
4. Maintaining good relationship with clinical and consulting institutes for students’ off-campus internship.
5. Participating in all sorts of research projects subsidized
by National Science Council, Council of Agriculture, and Department of Health of the Executive Yuan. The School has also been encouraging the departments to promote international research projects.
In the future, the School will pragmatically and creatively cultivate students’ cultural and general science literacy in order to improve the academic quality and to bring welfare to our society.

The School of Law was founded in 1915 in Shanghai, China, as the first comparative law school in Asia. With the time-honored tradition in legal education, the school has adopted the Anglo-American law system as the core in its teaching for years.
In terms of teaching and research, the school features the following:
1. Multiple access to legal education. Besides the bachelor, master and Ph. D programs, the School offers master’s program for students who are not law
majors in undergraduate. The master programs in Comparative Law, Science and Technology Law, Finance Law, and the People’s Republic of China Law are also specifically designed for evening graduate students who work full-time during the day. In addition, the School of Extension Education provides credit courses for bachelor and master programs.
2. Diverse Curriculum. In addition to the domestic law curricula, students are required to take Anglo-American Law courses, in which, case analysis, written laws, and legal issues are covered. Class sessions are devoted primarily to the discussion of the original texts, legal methodology, and practical skills needed for professionals in legal practice.
3. Humanity in legal education. Students are encouraged to participate in club activities and social services to have a legal education in line with society.
4. Integrating legal education with career planning. In addition to the career planning courses, the School has established a Law Student Career Planning Committee providing career questionnaires, lectures, visits, and seminars to assist students with their career planning and employment opportunities.

The School of Business has been in operation since 1969. Students are placed under strict professional trainings and cultivated to be full grown men with global views and creativity. The graduate programs are focused on nurturing academic talents with high quality research abilities and executive talents to meet the needs of the business world.
In terms of teaching and research, each department shares the following features:
1. The school offers cross-discipline courses with faculty members from the Department of Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, International Business, Financial Engineering, and Actuarial Mathematics. Moreover, Porgram of Finance and Program of Technology Management are developed to expand students’ scope of knowledge.
2. The curricula emphasize on global and multifaceted education. The Global Business Program, an all English lecture program, was established in 2007 to build up students’ business professions with international perspectives and experiences.
3. All of the departments have case study discussion courses that invite scholars, experts and guest professors to speak on the current economic policies, economic development, business management, etc.
4. International and cross-strait academic exchanges and cooperations are
highly valued. Cross-strait trade and economic courses are given by guest professors from all over the world.
5. Faculties are encouraged to form research groups to enhance quality and quantity of research.
6. The school offers professionalism to society, put theories into practice, and help open dialog among government, academics, and industry.

Soochow University has various partnerships with institutes around the world, which allows students to spend 1 or 2 semesters studying at the overseas universities. Also, Soochow University accepts students from over 100 international partner institutes up to 2 semesters.
Besides the student exchange program, Soochow University offers its students the opportunity to participate in dual degree program with some of the prestigious universities of the world, such as Thunderbird School of Global Management (USA), Purdue University (USA), IESEG School of Management, Lille (France).

The Global Business Program (GBP) provides students with modern-day knowledge, proven skills and wide-range abilities to excel in any international business setting in the 21st century. The GBP is a two-year business program specializing in the following fields:

In 2007, the School of Business (SBSCU) signed a dual degree agreement with Thunderbird School of Global Management, a famous educational institution in the United States widely known for its full time International Management Program. Both schools jointly offer a graduate level program in both management and global studies. This dual degree program - Master of Business Administration (MBA) / Master of Global Management (MGM) - arms students from both schools with necessary strengths and career planning advantages for a flourishing career in global business.
To better meet the daunting demand in an increasingly competitive global economy, the GBP trains students in developing global views and creative thinking strategically. Through sound theoretical pedagogy, combined with academic rigor and high quality research activities, the GBP aims to nurture in students improved managerial and decision making skills to succeed in a multinational corporate world. Graduates are well prepared to manage an enterprise engaged primarily in international business or a company employing a multicultural and multinational workforce.
While the GBP is an all English program, students are encouraged to take Chinese language classes offered by the International Cooperation Division of this university. Those who have achieved a certain proficiency in Chinese will also be allowed to take related graduate courses taught in Chinese.

In order to foster the spirit of volunteer service and internationalize our campus, Office of International and Cross-Strait Academic Exchange at Soochow University has recruited students who are enthusiastic about international service and foreign cultures to the “Soochow University Students’ International Service” (SUSIS) to serve guests and international students.
Life at SCUSoochow University organizes diverse activities for the international students, such as Welcome Reception, International Student Orientation, Cultural trips, International Culinary Festival and Biking with President. With the assistance of SUSIS Club, SCU international students can not only engage more in the exceptional living and learning environment, but also experience the variety of Taiwanese culture.
SUSIS Club offers service including:
1. International airport pick-up.
2. Assistance in checking in accommodation.
3. Assistance in enrollment, courses registration and the other administrative process.

Chinese Language Center, Soochow University
ChineseLanguage Program
Founded in 2013, the Chinese Language Center (CLC) is a government-recognized center for teaching Chinese as a foreign language in Northern Taiwan, offering a complete Chinese language training program. “To transmit knowledge of Chinese culture and cultivate Chinese language skills”, CLC aims to provide professional programs for those who would like to explore Chinese language and Taiwanese culture.
Diverse teaching approaches
Based on different students' preferences, Chinese program is designed in several sessions with different levels. All courses are conducted in Chinese to strengthen their language ability.

Chinese Study Camp
CLC provides Chinese study camp for groups of 10 people or above. The camps are offered in January during winter vacation, and in June, July and August during summer vacation. Students will be divided into different levels depending on their Chinese proficiency; beginner level is also acceptable.

VisaandARC
International students should apply for Visitor’s Visa in their home country to enter Taiwan. Students planning to study at Soochow University for one year or longer can apply for Resident Visa at the Taipei Embassy or Representative Office in their home country, or at the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan.
Please note that the duration of stay starts from the day following arrival. Students must apply for Alien Residence Certificate (ARC) at the National Immigration Agency in Taipei within 15 days after receiving their Resident Visa.
