PICTORIAL PANTHEON Of SONOMA’S VENERAbLE VINTNERS BeTTie and jiM hall In A.D. 1999, twenty-six Sonoma Valley Vintners were immortalized by Sonoma’s Pluto of Pictures, Photographer Ron Zak, in a commission of photos that were displayed in The General’s Daughter restaurant. When the restaurant sold, the owners—with patrician generosity—donated the portraits to the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Foundation with specific instructions that they be used to raise money to benefit the citizens of Sonoma.

We have paired these one-of-a-kind portraits, most with a signed three-liter bottle from the winery, to create a series suitable for even the most commanding collector. Each pair begins its odyssey at $1,000 apiece and will be on display at the Silent Auction, in the Toga Lounge during Sunday’s Harvest Wine Auction extravaganza.

Since the day it opened its doors as the Sonoma Grammar School in March of 1916, the Sonoma Community Center has been like the ancient Roman Forum—the center of education, the arts, and a respect for history. Thousands of Sonoma citizens have utilized its classrooms, lecture halls and dining room to celebrate events, pursue the arts, and to cultivate their sense of community.Sonoma is a city without a Parks and Recreation Department. The public relies on the Sonoma Community Center to fulfill those needs. Membership-based, funding comes—not from the Emperor—but from dues, rental fees, grants, corporate sponsorships and donations from the generosity of the proletariat. But even these generous sources aren’t generating enough funding to address the capital needs that are now becoming a threat to the Center’s continuing operation, and it’s falling into ruins.Two small private schools, a church, several service clubs, non-profits, and a local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous call the Center home. The Center’s primary mission remains the same: the cultural, educational, and recreational enrichment of Sonoma Valley, and the protection of this treasured Sonoma landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
