SONOMA HARVEST WINE AUCTION FUND THE FUTURE 2014

If Kids Can’t Read, They Can’t Succeed

Did you know that if kids cannot read by third grade, studies indicate:

• They are less likely to complete high school

• They face fewer job prospects

• They are more likely to be involved in crime

You have an opportunity to change the future for at-risk kids, which will

improve the quality of life for our community, now and for generations to come.

Today in Sonoma County, over half of all third grade students (54%) read below

proficiency levels. Teaching our kids to read provides the keys to unlock their

futures and makes our community a better place.

Closing the literacy gap is also a smart investment. It would result in nearly

$800 million of increased economic output, thousands of jobs, and $53 million

in new revenue in the next ten years.

Our multi-year Fund the Future goal is to help Sonoma County increase

the third grade literacy rate to 90% by 2018. Join us in supporting this life-

changing initiative for Sonoma County children, and make a better future for

all of us. In 2013 we set a record with over $700,000 in contributions for third

grade literacy programs through our Fund the Future. Help us this year as we

break our record again!

The Fund the Future Programs:

Fund the Future proceeds will be shared by several of Sonoma County’s most

powerful and effective children’s literacy programs, including:

• Schools of Hope (United Way of the Wine Country)

• Pasitos Playgroups (Community Action Partnership)

• AVANCE (Community Action Partnership)

• Accelerated English Program (Healdsburg Education Foundation)

• Summer Reading and Writing Academy & Grade Level Proficiency

Project (Sonoma Valley Education Foundation)

Programs were selected based on proven track records, strong metrics,

geographic coverage, and with an eye to supporting a breadth of programs

addressing both pre-reading preparation and teaching kids to read.

19

Page 7: Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction Catalog

Community Action Partnership Sonoma County: Pasitos Playgroups

Pasitos is an educational playgroup program designed to provide low-income,

Spanish-speaking parents, and their 3-4 year old children, an engaging and

structured learning environment that promotes parent-child interactions to

improve school readiness. Parents receive weekly book bags to encourage

daily reading, which also include tools and information that help them as their

child’s first and most important teacher. As a result of the resounding success

of the 2013 Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction, Sonoma Wine Country Weekend

was able to fund 11 Pasitos family groups, including five new groups, which

serve more than 130 children and their parents.

Community Action Partnership Sonoma County: AVANCE

AVANCE (Spanish for progress or advancement) is a nationally recognized,

evidence-based parent education program that reaches Spanish-speaking, low-

income, and isolated families. This intensive program teaches participants

crucial parenting skills and encourages parents as their child’s first teacher.

Parents learn how to make toys and how to use them as tools to enhance

parent-child communication, stimulate language development, and teach their

children school readiness skills. Parents also learn how to access community

resources and are encouraged and supported in setting goals to increase their

own education and skills to foster their family’s economic stability.

United Way of the Wine Country: Schools of Hope

Schools of Hope is an Early Grade Reading Initiative that helps children

build the critical reading skills needed to succeed in school and life.

Through Schools of Hope, United Way of the Wine Country recruits, trains,

and places community volunteers in the schools who then work one-on-one

with Kindergarten through third grade students during the school day to

supplement the work they are doing in the classroom. Because of funding

received from Sonoma Wine Country Weekend, Schools of Hope was able to

service three additional schools and expand services at two other schools.

2014 FUND THE FUTURE PROGRAMS

20

Page 8: Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction Catalog

Healdsburg Education Foundation: Accelerated English Program

The Healdsburg Education Foundation (HEF) raises funds to support K-12

education for all students in the Healdsburg area public schools and directs

resources to educational programs that will have the greatest impact on

student learning. HEF also empowers the Healdsburg area public schools to

take on innovative curriculum and practices that they would otherwise not

be able to offer to their students. Sonoma Wine Country Weekend is proud

to support innovation with the addition of the Accelerated English Program,

which aims to increase the English proficiency of students thus allowing

them to fully access grade level instruction.

Sonoma Valley Education Foundation: Summer Reading and

Writing Academy & The Grade Level Proficiency Project

The Sonoma Valley Education Foundation piloted this camp-like reading

program in a district where only 30% of third graders we reading at grade

level. At the Summer Reading Academy kids spend 5 hours a day reading

books and engaging in activities that not only improve their reading skills,

but also develop a true love for reading. Sonoma Valley Teachers also learn

from the Academy through training opportunities to help students improve

their reading. In 2013 the Summer Reading Academy served only 75

children, however, because of funding from Sonoma Wine Country Weekend,

the 2014 Summer Reading Academy included 300 children.

The Grade Level Proficiency Project which was piloted and was successful in

raising reading scores in the 2013 academic year, works to ensure that every

student participating will reach or exceed grade level proficiency in reading

by the end of third grade using the advanced software application, Lexia.

FUND THE FUTURE: If Kids Can’t Read, They Can’t Succeed

Did you know that today in Sonoma County, 54 percent of all third grade students read below proficiency levels? This little-known fact is having an impact on our entire community.

STUDIES INDICATE THAT IF KIDS CANNOT READ BY THIRD GRADE:

• They are less likely to complete high school

• They face fewer job prospects

• They are more likely to be involved in crime or have serious health issues

Our 2014 Fund the Future supports essential reading programs that foster literacy skills and reading comprehension for our at-risk elementary school kids. We believe that every child deserves to know how to read, and a chance to build a better future for us all.

Help Fund the Future for our community, and your donation will help increase the number of Sonoma County children who learn to read, and then succeed! By simply raising your paddle, you can create a ripple effect in a child’s life that leads to a better future for each of them and for our community as a whole.
