PRINCIPAL’S NEWS - Kirsty Squires PBL Launch Day
Last Tuesday we held our official PBL launch day. Parents
and
families were given the opportunity to participate in
mini-lessons to gain an
understanding of our program. Year 6 were fantastic on the day
taking on the
‘teacher’ role and K-3 proved the real hit of the day with their
PBL song.
Each family took home a ‘show bag’ on the day with lots of
goodies inside
them.
Thank you to all who attended on the day. If you have any
questions please
don’t hesitate in contacting one of the PBL team members, Mrs
Cranstone,
Wendy Paxton, Nicky Ward or myself, however in the newsletter we
will be
giving you small pieces of information that you may find useful
about PBL. If
you have anything that you feel the community would benefit by
with us
putting it in the newsletter please let me know.
Kariong Mountains Learning Community Showcase Night

many families who came along to show their support even if they
had no
children performing.

Year 6 News
Just a reminder that the Year 6 cookie dough fundraiser orders
need to be
returned shortly.
A number of students are to complete their NAIDOC stories as
part of their
homework this week. These need to be returned on Thursday.
Well done to the recorder players who performed at KMHS. They
couldn’t have
played better and I have received much positive feedback. Thank
you to the
parents for attending. It was pleasing to see students attending
who were not
part of the performance.
Cultural Exchange Camp
We would like to wish Judith and Shawn good luck as they spend a
week in
Walgett on an Indigenous Cultural Exchange Camp. This is an
annual sports &
cultural exchange to Walgett for Aboriginal students enrolled in
local primary
schools in Gosford's LGA. Students who attend represent their
schools in the
Ricky Walford Shield rugby league & Jenny Wright Shield
netball carnival.
The trip enhances students’ education by building self-esteem,
confidence,
cultural affirmation, sporting ability & fitness. The
students visit such places as
Lightning Ridge, the Aboriginal Cultural Centre with locals
doing storytelling &
other workshops with students and a Walk in Mine Tour.
The highlight of the trip is visiting Walgett Primary School
with local students
doing songs in an Aboriginal Language for the Gosford
students.
Athletics
Please note the leave time from school is 7:45am for those
providing or being
provided transport to Mingara on Friday. I will distribute
transport notes
tomorrow once all permission notes have been returned.
The $8 fee is to cover the booking of the Athletics Centre.
Please ensure that
this is paid to the school’s office. Thank you to those who have
volunteered to
man the barbecue.
When I receive a programme of events, I will send a copy home
with each
competitor. Keep in mind that this will be an order of events
and no times can be
provided.
Please let Mrs Squires or myself know when your child is leaving
the carnival.

Why is music education so important ?
Music participation provides a unique opportunity for literacy
preparation. Whether the children are singing, playing, or
listening,
teachers direct them to listen and hear in new ways which
exercises their aural discrimination.
Playing instruments and adding movement to the lessons teaches
children about sequential learning which is
essential in reading comprehension.
Plato once said that music “is a more potent instrument than any
other for education”. You will find many teachers of young
chil-
dren who would agree with him. Recent research has found that
music uses both sides of the brain, a fact that makes it
valuable
in all areas of development. Music affects the growth of a
child’s brain academically, emotionally, physically and
spiritually.
Music is academic. For some people, this is the primary reason
for providing music lessons to their children. A
recent study from the University of California found that music
trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Second graders
who
were given music lessons scored 27% higher on proportional math
and fractions tests than children who received no special
instruction. Research indicates that musical training
permanently wires a young mind for enhanced performance.
Music is physical. Music can be described as a sport. Learning
to sing and keep rhythm develops coordination. The air and wind
power necessary to blow a flute, trumpet or saxophone promotes a
healthy body.
Music is emotional. Music is an art form. We are emotional
beings and every child requires an artistic outlet. Music may be
your
child’s vehicle of expression.
Music is for life. Most people can’t play soccer, or football at
70 or 80 years of age but they can sing. And they can play piano
or
some other instrument. Music is a gift you can give your child
that will last their entire lives.

Meet Kash from Year 4
Kash has been playing in the School Band for one and
half years and has worked hard at mastering the trumpet!
His hard work recently paid off when he was given his
very own trumpet for his 10th birthday.
Happy birthday Kash, and keep up the good work.
If you would like your child to experience the joy of making
music why not sign up for our School Band. Please con-
tact Mr Mitchel or the School Office for more details.
