When “solving” an equation for a variable, we are trying to ‘isolate’ that variable – get it by itself

PARTNER PLAY

1. You and a partner will be going head to head to solve some equations. You are responsible for one column and they are responsible for the other column. Show your work on a separate piece of paper!

2. Once you both have solved your equations, check to see that you have the same answers. Even though the equations are different, you should both get the same answers!

3. Turn it in to the wire basket! Do not worry about the back!

4. Begin the practice in your booklet – whatever you do not finish is homework.

MULTISTEP EQUATIONS

• Our goal for multistep equations is the same as one and two step : we are trying to isolate the variable.

• What is different about multistep?

• More than one “x”

Case 1: Two “x”s on the same side

A. Combine like terms

B. Solve like a one/two step equation

Example 1: -20 = -4x – 6x

MULTISTEP EQUATIONS• Case 2: “x”s on both sides

A. Move one of your variables to the other side.

REMEMBER: use opposite operations

Helpful Hint: typically it is easier to move smaller “x”.

Example 2: 8x – 2 = -9 + 7x

EXAMPLE 3: 5 + 2(Y+4) = 5(Y-3) + 10

• You will NOT always get a number for an answer. Other than a real number, there are two possible solutions you could have:

1. All Real Numbers

2. No Solution

Example 4: 6(4+y) = 5(y-3) +10 Example 5: 3(a+1) -5=3a - 2
