Leading-edge digital audio-visual devices, such as full-HD TVs, Blu-ray recorders and Set-Top Boxes, are the epitome of the

system on a chip (SoC). The EMMA and R-Home series are core devices in these applications, and play a leading role in

advanced processing to ensure the best possible experience for the consumer. Renesas have a long history in producing devices

for audio-visual applications having shipped its first STB MPEG decoder SoC in 1998.

Renesas has developed a new integrated SoC platform, which incorporates the core technologies essential for the three

areas of the future networked society: mobile devices, automotive information systems and home multimedia applications.

The new integrated SoC platform has been formed by combining advanced technologies of the different application

areas. By developing new products based on the new integrated platform, Renesas provides timely solutions for the

growing market.

The new R-Home series of SoCs will be launched to bring even greater performance to STB products.

Reference Design Example

Renesas has available a range of cost and power consumption optimised reference designs based on the EMMA MPEG decoder SoCs. These reference designs enable manufacturers and broadcasters to leverage Renesas’ widely recognised cost, power and time to market advantages when bringing a new product to market. To complement the hardware database Renesas also provides low level driver code and demonstration software. Fully featured DVB stacks are available from 3rd parties. This enables Renesas to be flexible in supporting a range of customer development models.

The adoption of digital television broadcasting has expanded worldwide, and the popularity of 3D broadcasts is expected to grow in the future. As a result, there is a rising demand today for semiconductor devices that combine compatibility with these standards along with support for the latest video formats. At the same time, increasing demand for affordably priced products such as Set-Top Boxes and Digital Video Recorders is anticipated in emerging economies that are experiencing rapid growth.

The SoC Partner Program is an organisation for strengthening collaboration with partners based around Renesas Electronics’(*) SoC platform targeting the mobile, automotive, and home multimedia device segments. The SoC Partner Program covers all areas of our SoC business and encompasses the R-Mobile Consortium, R-Car Consortium, and R-Home Consortium, which are special-interest groups for each segment/area.
