Solution Stoichiometry
Dimensional Analysis
• Involves converting a quantity from one set of units to another set of units
• Done by multiplying original quantity by a series of conversion factors
• Each conversion factor is a form of unity (ie. 1.00) with different units in numerator and denominator
• Original units multiplied by all conversion factor units cancel algebraically to yield desired (final) set of units
Dimensional AnalysisExample: Convert 1.55 kg/m3 to mg/L
Volumetric Calculations
• (vol of soln) x (concentration) = (mol of solute)
• (g of solute) / (MM of solute) = (mol of solute)
• (vol of solute) x (density of solute) / (MM of solute) = (mol of solute)
To work problems involving molarity, volume and grams first calculate MOLES

• How many g of K2Cr2O7 are in 50.0 mL of 0.850 M solution?• What is molarity of 2.50 g of (NH4)2SO4 in 250 mL of solution?• How many mL of 0.387 M CuSO4 contains 1.00 g of solute?• How many g of AgNO3 in 100.0 mL of a 0.200 M solution?• How much 6.00 M HNO3 stock needed to make 250 mL of 1.00 M solution?• Calculate molarity of 250 mL of glycerol solution made with 50.00 mL of pure
glycerol. Density of glycerol is 1.266 g/mL
Next use dimensional analysis to calculate the final quantity you need
