The only way towards meeting the CO 2 -limits is to be more energy efficient. Therefore, one solution for fuel economy improvements could be the electrical hybridization of the powertrain. Mild hybrids are combinations of a conventional combustion engine and an electrical motor, which alternately drive the vehicle powertrain. They have smaller batteries (48V) than full-electric drives and a smaller motor which allows manufacturers to reduce cost and weight. Celanese high performance engineering polymers support OEMs in meeting the most stringent objectives. Plastics used for the guiderails of e-motors have to withstand high service temperatures and media exposure. Future mobility trends demand to implement an increased number of e-motors for servo and actuator drives to improve comfort, safety and efficiency levels of modern cars. To keep the impact on total weight of the care moderate, these specific e-motors need to be small in size and low in weight. Special high-performance plastics enable e-motors for these applications to meet the most stringent requirements in environments under the hood. Plastics used for stator and rotor insulations of these e-motors have to withstand demanding temperatures and harsh media exposure, even at thinnest wall designs.
