Remembering Christ’s Sacrifice
Solos or Duets for C and/or Bb Instruments with Keyboard Accompaniment
ForewordDuring Lent and Holy Week, there are many times in our worship services when we need to stop and reflect, to let the importance of the message of Christ’s sacrifice sink deeply into our souls. Those are times when the beauty of an instrumental hymn can often leave a deep impression on the hearts of our congregations.
This book provides six arrangements, appropriate for the weeks before Easter, which can be played by flute, oboe, violin, or clarinet. The first instrumental part can be performed as a solo, but there is also a second part which can be added by any of the instruments mentioned. The duets will work for any combination of those instruments, but the determination of “who plays what” should be based on the skill level of the players and the balance of the instruments. In some cases, notes are shown in octaves. The higher instruments (flute and violin) should take the higher octave if possible. (The preferred range is shown in larger notes; the optional range in cue-sized notes.) The slur marks in the instrumental parts should be interpreted as phrasing suggestions (knowing that wind and string instruments interpret them in different ways).
The score for the accompanist is found in the printed book, with the instrumental parts shown in concert pitch above the piano part. The individual parts (in C and B-flat transposition) are in PDF format on the enclosed CD-ROM. There is a separate CD which contains complete piano accompaniments, so you can play along with the tracks at home or in your services.
May your music serve the purposes described by J. S. Bach: “…to the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.”

C D InformationThe Accompaniment CD contained in this book is intended to be used as a rehearsal tool or, if desired, a performance resource. It should assist in the interpretation of each arrangement and enable both pianist and instrumentalist(s) to better utilize their shared rehearsal times. In addition to the Accompaniment CD, a separate disc is included which contains data files for the instrumental parts. You will need a PDF reader to open these files. You may download Adobe’s free Acrobat Reader from www.adobe.com/reader.
