PASTOR’S COLUMN MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Last year we hosted a comedy night which included dinner and three differ-ent comedians. It was truly a night of clean humor and good fun. This year we will hold the event on Friday, January 20, with dinner at 6:00 pm and the show beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets are on sale after Masses this week and next, as well as in the parish office. HELP WITH THE COMEDY NIGHT: We will need help with the comedy night selling tickets, 50/50 tickets, and set up and clean up. If you are able to help that evening, you can sign up on the main bulletin board in the Gathering Space. We will also be having a meeting on January 4, 2017 to work out the final details of the event. BAPTISM CLASS: Monday, January 23, at 7:00 pm, there will be a class for those parents who wish to have a child baptized in the near future. These classes are for parents who have not yet attended a class for Bap-tism. Both parents are strongly encouraged to attend the class prior to the birth of the child and prior to choosing godparents. Please call the parish office to make a reservation. REFLECTION ON THE READINGS: As our reading from Christmas focused on the child Jesus, our read-ings today focus on Mary. Mary highlights for us the need to take some time to reflect on the meaning of this season and the events of the birth of Christ into our world. We find Mary to be a quiet participant in the events of these Christmas days. We are told that she reflected on these events in her heart. We suspect that Mary did not understand the fuller meaning of all these things until much later, possibly after the resurrection of Jesus when the whole mystery of who Jesus is and the full plan of God has been played out. And so Mary remains quiet in these first days and weeks gathering the events that happen and the words that are spoken. She then ponders or reflects on these words in her heart in order to discern their deeper meaning in the plan of God, even holding some of them as puzzling and mysterious until after the resurrection of Jesus, when they begin to make more sense.

Mary is a model for us in the midst of all the events and distractions of this time of year. Whether we are distracted by the lights, the cards, the music, the feasting, the loneliness, the guests, or the presents, we are invited to take a moment to step back from it all and reflect on what it means for us that Jesus has taken on our human nature, become vulnerable as a human being, and shared in the joys and the hopes, the struggles and the pains, of being human. May we find that time to quietly reflect on the wonder of it all, as Mary did.

The first reading is a blessing that was spoken over the people as they embarked on a new stage in their journey through the desert. It is appropriate for us as we begin a new year and a new opportunity to live and practice our faith in the God whose love is so powerfully evident in this season. It is a time for us to pray for peace in the midst of the violence that overwhelms us at times in our communities, our nation, and our world. The vulnerable child Jesus is born into a similar time of violence and division but fosters a gentle and compassionate peace rather than more hatred and war. There is also unrest in our families, our jobs, our schools, and our neighborhoods, so we pray for the wisdom and the courage to be vulnerable in the midst of those difficult situations, so that we might be instruments of the peace of Jesus in our time and place. Some-how the real meaning of the season challenges us to quietly hold the violence and the divisions in our hearts until we can be resolved and compassionate enough to heal them by living the example of Jesus.

PRESCHOOL-St. John Paul II St. John Paul II is excited

to open a second Mini class for 3-4 year olds on Mon-

day and Wednesday from 8:00-11:00 AM beginning in

January. If you are interested in enrolling your child,

[email protected].
