Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection

As the liturgical year comes to a close, it is fitting that we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. He is the beginning and the end. To him everything is directed and all belongs to him, for God “has put everything under his feet, and gave him as head to the Church” (cf. Eph 1:22).

In today’s gospel Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world. Yet, he adds: “Yes, I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth hears my voice” (Jn 18:37). As his followers, we must listen to his voice and spread his truth in order that we may bring about that “kingdom of truth and life, of holiness and grace, of justice, love and peace” which the preface of this feast prays for.

May Mary our Mother, who reigns with her Son, help us to be faithful witnesses and to bring about Christ’s kingdom among us. God bless you! Long live Christ the King!

Solemnidad de Jesucristo, Rey del Universo (Ciclo B) Reflexión Dominical

Al concluir el año litúrgico, es justo que celebremos la solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Él es el principio y el fin. Todo se dirige a él y todo le pertenece, porque Dios “lo ha sometido todo bajo sus pies, y lo ha nombrado, por encima de todo, cabeza de la Iglesia” (cf. Ef 1,22).

En el evangelio de hoy Jesús dice a Pilato que su reino no es de este mundo. Y sin embargo, añade: “Sí, soy rey. Para eso he nacido, para eso he venido al mundo, para dar testimonio de la verdad. Quien oye la verdad escucha mi voz” (Jn 18,37). Como seguidores suyos, debemos escuchar su voz y difundir su verdad para hacer realidad en el mundo ese “reino de verdad y de vida, de santidad y de gracia, de justicia, de amor y de paz” que pide el prefacio de esta fiesta.

Que María nuestra Madre, que reina con su Hijo, nos ayude a ser testigos fieles del Señor y trabajar porque el reino de Cristo venga a nosotros. Que Dios los bendiga. ¡Viva Cristo Rey!

Steady Church Growth Worldwide IN CELEBRATION OF THE 92ND WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, Agenzia Fides has released a report announcing that the Church had grown by 14 million faithful since 2015.

In 2016, the world population stood at around 7.35 billion people, which was an increase of about 103 million from the previous year. Of the entire human population, nearly 1.3 billion people recognize themselves as Catholic, which is nearly 18% of the world’s population. Increases in the Catholic population were observed in all continents, except for Europe, which for the third consecutive year dropped by about 240,000. The continent which demonstrated the greatest Catholic growth was Africa, with over six million new Catholics in 2016.

This year, the number of Catholics per priest increased by 39, to an average of 3,130 per priest. This suggests the church is still in great need of vocations. The total number of priests in the world totals about 415,000.

Members of both male and female secular institutes both saw decreases across the world in 2016, except in Africa. Missionaries, on the other hand, rose by about 3,000 worldwide. Sadly, the number of catechists worldwide decreased by nearly 37,000, with America losing more than 20,000.

The number of diocesan seminarians rose by nearly 1,000. Religious seminarians took a hit in all continents except for Africa, which saw more than 1,000 vocations in both their religious and diocesan seminarians.

Let us continue to pray to the Lord of the vineyard to send workers into his vineyard.

PARA CELEBRAR LA 92A JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LAS MISIONES, la Agencia Fides ha publicado un informe en que se anuncia que la Iglesia cuenta con 14 millones de fieles más desde 2015.

En 2016, la población mundial era alrededor de 7,35 millardos, acusando un aumento de casi 103 millones desde el año anterior. De toda esa población humana, 1,3 millardos se reconocen como católicos, casi el 18% de la población mundial. Se observó un aumento en la población católica en todos los continentes a excepción de Europa, donde por tercer año consecutivo el número de católicos decayó en unos 240,000. El continente que mostró más crecimiento en número de fieles fue África, donde hubo más de seis millones de nuevos católicos en 2016.

El número de católicos por sacerdote aumentó a 39, un promedio de 3,130 católicos por sacerdotes. Esto sugiere que la Iglesia aún necesita un mayor número de vocaciones. El total de sacerdotes en todo el mundo es 415,000.

The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Saturday, December 8, is a holy day of obligation. Please note the following: that weekend we are obligated to attend two different Masses in order to fulfill two distinct obligations, one for the Immaculate Conception, one for the 2nd Sunday of Advent. One cannot fulfill both obligations by attending only one Mass. The vigil Mass on Friday at 7 pm as well as the morning Mass on Saturday fulfill the obligation for the Immaculate Conception. The Saturday evening Mass does not, as it is the

Sunday Mass. La solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción, sábado 8 de diciembre, es fiesta de obligación. Meet New Saints /Conozca nuevos Santos ST. MARÍA DE LA PURÍSIMA SALVAT ROMERO (1926-

1998) — María Isabel Salvat Romero was born in 1926 in

Spain. Her family left Spain for Portugal from July 1936 to

1938 in order to escape the persecutions of the Spanish

Civil War; they returned following the conclusion of the

conflict. During her time in Portugal, she realized her true

calling was to that of religious life. She joined the Sisters of

the Company of the Cross, established by Saint Angela of

the Cross, on December 8, 1944, taking the name María

de la Purísima of the Cross.

She eventually ascended to the position of Superior

General in 1977 and was reelected three times, remaining in office until her death. During

her tenure, she oversaw the updating of the order’s Constitution, defending and upholding

the charism of the congregation while focusing on a renewed fidelity to the message of the

Gospel and the magisterium of the Church, as well as an added emphasis on Marian and

Eucharistic devotion. Mother María also met with the sick and the poor each morning,

working tirelessly for them in terms of serving them food and cleaning their clothes. Mother

María died in Seville in 1998. She was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015.

SANTA MARÍA DE LA PURÍSIMA SALVAT ROMERO (1926-1998) — María Isabel Salvat Romero nació en 1926 en España. Su familia se exilió en Portugal desde julio de 1936 hasta 1938 para escapar la persecución de la Guerra Civil Española, regresando a España al final del conflicto. María Isabel comprendió su llamado a la vida religiosa durante su estancia en Portugal. El 8 de diciembre de 1944 ingresó a la Compañía de la Cruz, fundada por Santa Ángela de la Cruz, tomando el nombre de María de la Purísima de la Cruz.

Con el tiempo llegó a ser elegida Superiora General de la congregación en 1977, para cuyo cargo fue reelegida tres veces, ocupándolo hasta su muerte. Supervisó la actualización de las constituciones de la orden, defendiendo y sosteniendo su carisma al mismo tiempo que hacía énfasis en renovar la fidelidad al mensaje evangélico y al magisterio de la Iglesia, así como a una mayor devoción mariana y eucarística. La Madre María se reunía cada mañana con los pobres y enfermos y trabajó incansablemente por servirlos, alimentarlos y proporcionarles ropa limpia. Murió en Sevilla en 1998 y fue canonizada por el Papa Francisco en 2015.

I would like these reflections to be crowned by Mary, because she lived the Beatitudes of Jesus as none other. She is that woman who

rejoiced in the presence of God, who treasured everything in her heart, and who let herself be pierced by the sword. Mary is the saint among

the saints, blessed above all others. She teaches us the way of holiness and she walks ever at our side. She does not let us remain

fallen and at times she takes us into her arms without judging us. Our converse with her consoles, frees and sanctifies us. Mary our Mother

does not need a flood of words. She does not need us to tell her what is happening in our lives. All we need do is whisper, time and time

again: “Hail Mary…” (176)

Let us ask the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us a fervent longing to be saints for God’s greater glory, and let us encourage one another in this effort. In this way, we will share a

happiness that the world will not be able to take from us. (177)

Quiero que María corone estas reflexiones, porque ella vivió como nadie las bienaventuranzas de Jesús. 8th Grade Retreat

The Eighth Grade class took part in a retreat at La Salle directed by Sr. Rosa López

and a team of peer ministers. Some of the members of the team at La Salle were

alumni of St. Hugh. It was a joyous day filled with activities, reflection, time for

sharing and time for adoration. Our 8th grade students opened their hearts to re-

ceive many graces and blessings from God. It was a beautiful day at the La Salle

retreat house. We thank Mrs. Fernández for giving us this opportunity and all the

parents who supported us.
