Applications of SDH in Italy
By communication and dissemination of the project “SDH – takeoff” in
Italy, some feasibilty studies have been activated linked to applications of
Solar District Heating, and other projects are currently planning.
7
Applications of SDH in Italy
Main topics of the “italian” approach to SDH technology should be
summerized as follows:
Use of the Solar Thermal Plants as integrative heat production in
Integrated Energy Systems;
Requirements to operate within systems the temperature of which
is greater than or equal to 90°C out and 55 – 60°C in;
Strong stakeholders’ attention to the integration of the plants into
the landscape;p ;
Present incentive system privileges the use of the “renewable
electric” sources and not the Thermal.

electric sources and not the Thermal.
Applications of SDH in Italy
The most in–progress initiatives are now proposed by:
HERA – Ferrara
GES – Pomarance
To develop these projects, a first technical cooperation has been
activated with italian providers.

The District Heating in Ferrara – Present and Future
The City of Ferrara is served with a District Heating System mainly fed withrenewable sources: the “Geothermal Energy Site” in Casaglia and the“Waste-To-Energy Plant”.

Project Outline
The general plan of the new production Area, working with renewable( ll d “P l E i Ri bili”) l t d i t F isources, (so-called “Polo Energie Rinnovabili”) located in eastern Ferrara, is:
Solar District Heating (SDH)g ( )about 1 MWt as a primary source of thermal energy (base-load) for the districtheating network
New Geothermal Source2 Extraction Wells + 1 for re-introducing the fluid in the ground (total 14 MWt)
ORC System for electric power production1 MWe generatorg
2+2 thermal energy storages
13
1 Back-up Thermal Station3 boilers (each of them of 14 MWt)
