A Path Around the

Sun

A planet is a large ball-shaped body that revolves, or travels around, the sun.

Earth is one of eight planets that revolve around the sun.

orbit is the path an object takes as it revolves around the sun.Planets travel in an orbit that is a slight oval shape.

The strong pull of the sun`s gravity holds the planets in their orbits. If it were not for the sun`s gravity, Earth would move off through space in a straight line.

The solar system is a huge place. Venus is the planet closest to Earth. But it is about 42 million kilometers from Earth.

The Inner planets

The eight planets are divided into inner and outer planets.

Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.

They are the planets closest to the sun.

They all have rocky surfaces.

The 4 inner planets

-It is the closest planets to the sun. -Its surface is dry and very hot. --It is the smallest planet. -It is less than half the size of Earth.

-It has no moons.

Venus -It is the second planet from the sun

-It is very hot and rocky.-It has craters, mountains, and

valleys.-Thick clouds cover the planet and

trap the sun`s energy, making it very hot.

Earth

-It is the third planet from the sun.-Water covers 3/4 of Earth`s

surface.-It is the only planet that supports

life.-It has mild temperatures, liquid

water, and an atmosphere.

Mars -It is the fourth planet from the sun

-It is half the size of Earth.-It is called ’’red planet’’ because its

surface is reddish-orange.-Temperatures on it are cold for

liquid water.-It has volcanoes and deep canyons.

-It has two moons.

The outer planets

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.They are huge and made of gas.They are called gas giants. Their surfaces are not solid. They have thick layers of clouds and strong winds.They have rings around them.Jupiter’s rings are hard to see.

-It is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest planet.-It is over 11 times the size of Earth-It is covered with thick clouds.-It has more than 60 moons.
