Lighting in African villagesIn the rural regions of Africa there is very rarely a public energy supply as in most cases it is too expensive to lay power cables to the remote-lying villages. So a blanket coverage power supply as is present in Germany is not practicable in the rural areas of Africa.

To have at least a bit of light in the houses, schools and hospital wards millions of kerosene and oil lamps are used night after night. Yet even apart from the constantly rising fuel costs, oil lamps only give out a very weak light that is totally insufficient for reading and working.

What is more, the poisonous fumes given off by the lamps in regular use cause health damage to eyes and respiratory tracts to which women and children are particularly susceptible.

Because of the situation described the objective of all efforts and technical innovations must be to break the dependency on kerosene and oil lamps and develop alternatively a clean and financially sustainable method of lighting.

Modern solar systems offer this alternative as, because of technical advancements, solar technology has become long-lasting and thus reasonably priced. At the same time newly developed, highly efficient and energy-saving lamps are coming into use that are clearly proving their worth in use in Africa.

Through the combination of modern solar technology and energy-saving lamps clean and economical lighting is enabled by which in turn a sustainable improvement in the living conditions in Africa can in many cases be achieved.

Reliable lighting through the SOLAR LIGHT BOX system The newly developed SOLAR LIGHT BOX lighting system combines the advantages of energy-saving lamps and solar technology in an ideal way and offers an optimal solution for almost all applications for lighting and power supply to houses in rural areas.

The system was designed in collaboration between African project partners and German technicians especially for use in village schools, remote clinics, missions and residential property and is meanwhile in use in Ghana, Mali and Tanzania.

If at a later date an extension of the energy capacity becomes necessary, this can be simply achieved by distribution of the tasks over several systems, e.g. for lighting, cooling of medicine, powering a computer and printer.

Cost saving by abdication of diesel generatorsIn the rural areas of Africa the electrical current is up to now produced with diesel generators, which – due to the high costs – are used in the evening only for some hours. Often, the generators are old and working no longer failure-free, so that a safe provision of electricity is not possible in most cases. The implementation of the system SOLAR LIGHT BOX guarantees a 24 hours electrical power supply and the costs for fuel can be saved completely.

How the SOLAR LIGHT BOX system works

The system consists of three components:- Solar panels for power generation- LIGHT BOX for storage and processing of electricity- Lamps for effective lighting

The core element is the LIGHT BOX made of steel. Inside all the technical components except the solar panels and lamps are securely housed and protected from external influences.

Through the optimal coordination between solar panels, charge controller, battery and lamps, a high availability of solar-generated power and also an above-average service life of the energy storage is achieved.

On the LIGHT BOX there is also the cable connection to the solar panels and to the lamps and a 12 Volt connector socket as used in a car. This can be used to charge a mobile phone – a great relief for hospital wards that have to be contactable at any time.

High-quality solar panels from the manufacturer Kyocera of Japan with a guarantee period of 20 years, provide precisely calculable power outputs and a long functioning time of the whole system.

A theft-proof mounting of the solar panels with a rustproof frame on the roof also consistently ensure both a long service life of the system and also high-quality cables and switches in the interior of the building.

For lighting energy-saving lamps that have been tested over a long period are used. This guarantees a very good light output over many years even with high air humidity and high ambient temperature.

SOLAR LIGHT BOX with deep freezerIn the presetting ’Freeze’ the inside temperature drops down to -18 °C and the system works as a highly effective deep freezer. 12 Volt DC The systems SOLAR LIGHT BOX M, L, XL and XXL are designed as lighting systems and run high effective 12 V lamps, each 10 Watt, which belong to the scope of supply. Additionaly, a mobile phone can be recharged via an integrated 12 V car-socket. At the systems XL and XXL a laptop can be connected with a separate 12 V adapter.

230 Volt ACThe systems SOLAR LIGHT BOX L 400 AC and XL 800 AC are equipped with an integrated inverter and provide the possibility to run appliances with 230 V, for example computer, printer, medical equipment, TV, radio, etc. In each case it is necessary, to calculate and to consider the maximum AC-connected load as well as the total demand of energy of all connected units.
