Installing Solaris 11 Express Server in Oracle VirtualBox

Why Install “Text” (server)
● Oracle Solaris 11 Express Live CD needs > 2GB memory for performance considerations
– Requires system memory > 4GB exposed to VirtualBox in a Windows Environment
● Solaris is more of a server OE rather than a Desktop in most Data Centers

General Prerequisites
● Install VirtualBox
● Download Oracle Solaris 11 Express Text as an ~iso
● Download VirtualBox Guest Additions as an ~iso.
Create a New VirtualBox InstanceHard Drive
● Create Dynamic Hard Drive
● File, Media Manager
– Dynamically Expanding
– 16GB to start
Create a New VirtualBox Instance
Assign the Dynamic Hard Drive &Mount the Solaris 11 Express ISO
Start the Solaris Install
● CD will boot into install mode
● Note the “nevada” version

● Select Keyboard

● Select Language
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Select “Install”

● Welcome
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Disk Layout recognizes VDI
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Use the Whole Disk
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Name Computer
● Network – select Automatically
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Select Region
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Select Time Zone Location
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Select Time Zone
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Confirm Date & Time
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Configure users and passwords
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Installation Summary
Solaris 11 Express Install
● F2 to Install
Solaris 11 Express Install
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Install Complete
● F8 to reboot
Solaris 11 Express Install
● Allow the reboot to complete
● Shutdown the VDI
Solaris 11 Express Install VirtualBox Guest Additions
● Mount ISO in Media Manager
● Restart the VDI

● Locate Guest Additions media
Solaris 11 Express Install VirtualBox Guest Additions
● Install Guest Additions with pkgadd
Solaris 11 Express Install VirtualBox Guest Additions
● May have to break
● Shut Down

● Unmount Guest Additions ISO
● Start VDI
