The Disappearing Art of Lure Making By Dr. Martin Aróstegui

The boat glides quietly through the tranquil waters of an Amazonian lagoon as the first rays of sunlight reach over the rainforest canopy to illuminate the beautiful scenery. Colorful tropical birds fly overhead starting their morning routine.

John Gore and Alan Zaremba are about to start fishing when Alan spots the sign of a large fish hunting for prey near a tree log partially submerged next to the shoreline and signals to

John to make a cast in that direction. John makes a perfect cast that lands in close proximity to the tree log and starts re-trieving his lure. It doesn’t take long before there is an explosion of water that reaches five feet in the air and John’s lure disappears in the resulting commotion. A huge Peacock Bass has struck John’s homemade lure and the battle has started.

An intense battle ensues that lasts about ten minutes until the beautiful fish is subdued at boat side. Alan helps John remove the lure and after a few photos of this beautiful trophy fish, John releases the fish back into the wild so it may fight another day.

This catch was very special indeed! John Gore was able to catch this beautiful fish with a lure that he designed and made at home in his tool shop. John belongs to a very small group of artisans that are keeping the art of lure making alive.

Many years ago, the only way to fish with an artificial lure was to make it yourself. At that time the pioneers of lure making were busy designing lures that would attract fish. They improved on their designs through the process of trial and error. Today, most anglers go to their local tackle shop and can find a lure from a large selection of mass manufactured kind. Making your own lures is difficult and time consuming, but the rewards of catching a trophy fish with your own creation are great!

There is no greater sense of accomplishment than that obtained by fishing with your own lure creations.

Biscayne Bay with Capt Joe González

By Pat FordI’ve been fishing the Flats of Biscayne Bay since 1972 and over those 40 years there have definitely been some major changes. Back in the ‘70s I fished with Capt Bill Curtis and double digit bonefish were pretty common. Many times I would run out in the afternoon in my now extinct Fibercraft skiff and wade for bonefish along the outside of Sands Key. In December of 1999, I caught a 15lb 8oz bonefish with

Capt Rick Murphy that won the Met Tournament, followed it up with a 25lb permit on fly on my own, and then 2 weeks later I landed a 14 lb bonefish on fly, again with Murphy. Unfortunately that 5 week run pretty much used up all my flats fishing luck for the rest of my lifetime. I still fish the Bay as often as possible and as the years go buy, it’s very clear to me that the fish are disappearing.

The big schools of bonefish are gone, double digit fish are rare and even the small ones are scarce and hard to feed. My friend, Bill Curtis, now 88 years old, says that 95% of the bonefish and tarpon that he saw in the 60s are gone. No one really knows whether it’s a lack of food, too much boat traffic, over fishing, netting or the 2010 cold snap, but the fishing has drastically changed in the Bay. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the guides from the Keys are routinely running up to Biscayne Bay to bonefish. It’s still one of the best places in the US to find the elusive ‘grey ghost’. I fish the Bay now with Capt Joe Gonzalez. Joe launches out of Crandon Park marina on Key Biscayne and his Hell’s Bay skiff allows him to fish every flat from Stiltsville to Key Largo and Joe knows them all like the back of his hand.

Recently I invited Channel 6 weather girl and Florida Insider Fish-ing Report co host, Jennifer Reeves, to ride along with me. Jennifer had never caught a bonefish or permit and I always enjoy introducing people to my world on the flats. We met Joe at dawn at the marina, loaded up his skiff and in just a few minutes we were poling over to a cluster of debris at the edge of a flat near Stiltsville. Jennifer loaded up her spinning rod with a small blue crab and as we approached,

Joe told her to cast the crab up current of the ‘wreck’ and just let it drift through. The sun hadn’t even cleared the horizon before Jennifer’s reel was screaming. Jen is an excellent angler but her first permit was special and it took her a good 25 minutes to bring it to the net.

It wasn’t even 8 o’clock and the day had been a complete success. As we ran south, Joe checked the tides on several flats. To the average person they all look the same but there are subtle differences that lure bones and permit to certain places on certain tides. The next several hours of hunting brought us a few shots at bonefish but no bites…the bonefish were being bonefish. Finally, Joe pulled up on the ocean side of Sands where the tide was just beginning to slack. He suggested that we leave the boat and walk along the flats to a point where he hope there might be a fish or two looking for a snack before slack tide. His expertise paid off and we spotted three fish tailing at the edge of the now very shallow flat. Jennifer is very good with a spinning rod and she flipped the shrimp about 15 feet ahead of the feeding bones and let

it sit. As we held our breath, one of the bones found her offering and sucked it in. Jen set the hook and her first ever bonefish took off for Bimini. There’s a reason we spend tons of money and countless hours stalking bonefish on the flats and that first blazing run is it. Jen’s fish ran off 50 yards of line, took a short break to catch its breath, then ran off another 30 yards. She worked it back several times only to have it take off again, but she was not to be denied as Joe scooped up her very first bonefish. Not a bad day for your first outing on Bis-cayne Bay. We didn’t catch any more bones that day but I did manage to pick up a rod long enough to catch a big tailing permit. As we ran back to the dock, I couldn’t help but wonder how our Bay could be so abused for so long, yet still provide such magnificent fish. It’s not as good as it once was, but if you’re riding with Capt Joe Gonzalez, it can still be very, very special.

Photo: Mark Mark Smestad 2012Club Nautico de San Juan’s 59th International Billfish Tournament (IBT) con-cluded with a spectacular 102 blue marlin releases, plus another milestone in billfish conservation history by being the first tournament to partner with National Geographic Society and successfully deployed and recovered six billfish Crittercams with the images of these magnificent fish in their natural environment.“We set a new record of an average of 2.5 blue marlin released per boat. It was a very successful tournament,” said tournament chairman, Miguel Donato. A total of 148 anglers from 8 countries fished aboard 40 boats. Gaviota, a Viking 52, won the Top Boat trophy by being the first boat to release six blue marlin. Joe Vizcarrondo, Gaviota’s owner and angler, explained, “We’ve fished in this tournament for over 10 years and this is the first time we’ve won the overall. One of the great secrets to our success was Capt. Luis Infanzon. He diligently stayed in position and tried to raise fish. The fact that he stuck to his method is why we fin-ished the way we did.”

Jaime Fullana, who released three of the dream team’s eight marlin and who has being an Organizing Committee member for decades, said “we enjoyed perfect fishing, weather and a bit of luck. It’s a great feeling to win.”Lady angler Stephanie Lebron from Puerto Rico, fishing aboard a Bertram 54, Tati-Way, successfully defended her title and earned Best Female again this year with two releases. “I caught the first fish on third fishing day,” explains Lebron. “It was over 500 pounds; the largest I’ve ever caught. It took me over 45 minutes to reel it in and make the release. I am so proud of that fish.”Lebron released her second blue marlin, a smaller fish that took just 10 min-utes to fight, on the final day of fishing. Bimini Big Game Announces “Wahoo Smackdown II” in February 2013 Some

The Big Game Club Resort & Marina is again shooting for some major Wahoo action in February with its Smackdown II Tournament. The legendary resort kicked off the Wahoo season run in November with some 60 anglers competing for more than $30,000 in cash and prizes. Many years ago we thought that the ocean’s resources were inexhaustible, no matter how many fish we took there would always be more to catch. Today we sadly understand that we were wrong. Fish stocks in the ocean have limits and we have already caused the collapse of fisheries in many parts of the world.

In recent years, the advent of aquaculture promised to provide large quantities of fish for human consumption that could reduce the pressure on our ocean resources. As we developed this industry, soon we realized that there were many problems that needed solutions.

The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science has developed an aquaculture program aimed at solving some of these problems through research and development.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit with two of the young scientists at the forefront of this program, Ron Hoenig manages the facility and studies cobia fish and John Stieglitz studies the aquaculture of dolphin fish. This facility can raise fish from the fertilized egg stage all the way to maturity. During my visit I had the opportunity to view the entire process of aquaculture of cobias and dolphin fish. Both of these species grow very fast and can be raised in large pens in the ocean.

Even though a lot of research still needs to be done, these young scientists are making a lot of progress in uncovering the scientific information needed to make aquaculture efficient and safe for people and our environment.
