In view of the instructions, for the third report using the satellite image AWiFS (56m) dated 18 th April 2016, KSRSAC has carried out the following; Assessment of soil moisture stress conditions in 12 northern districts (Bidar, Ballari, Belagavi, Bagalakot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburgi, Koppal, Vijayapura, Raichur and Yadgir) of Karnataka. Estimation of area under crop in 10 southern districts (Bengaluru Urban, Bangaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Mandya, Mysore, Ramanagra and Tumakuru) of Karnataka. State-wide Soil Moisture Stress Conditions State-wide assessment of soil moisture stress conditions as on as on 18 th April2016 is given in fig-1 and table-1. It is seen that 97.2% of the Karnataka State is under moderate and severe soil moisture stress conditions, an increase of 6.4% as compared to 30 th March 2016.

Soil Moisture Conditions in Northern Karnataka and

Crop Cover in Southern Karnataka as on 18thApril 2016

During the first meeting of Karnataka – Geographic Information System (K-GIS)

Empowered Committee, the Chief Secretary, Govt. of Karnataka has instructed KSRSAC to

provide information on soil moisture stress in northern districts of Karnataka and area under

crops in southern districts of Karnataka for the month of April 2016.

In view of the instructions, for the third report using the satellite image AWiFS (56m) dated

18th April 2016, KSRSAC has carried out the following;

Assessment of soil moisture stress conditions in 12 northern districts (Bidar,

Ballari, Belagavi, Bagalakot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburgi, Koppal,

Vijayapura, Raichur and Yadgir) of Karnataka.

Estimation of area under crop in 10 southern districts (Bengaluru Urban,

Bangaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Mandya,

Mysore, Ramanagra and Tumakuru) of Karnataka.

State-wide Soil Moisture Stress Conditions

State-wide assessment of soil moisture stress conditions as on as on 18th April2016 is given in

fig-1 and table-1. It is seen that 97.2% of the Karnataka State is under moderate and severe

soil moisture stress conditions, an increase of 6.4% as compared to 30th March 2016.

Soil Moisture Stress Conditions in Districts of Northern Karnataka

Ninety five percent area in Northern Karnataka experience moderate and severe soil moisture

stress conditions as on 18th

April 2016, an increase of 12.4% as compared to 30th March 2016.

Among Northern Karnataka districts (Table-2) Haveri has highest area 99.9%, under

moderate and severe soil moisture stress conditions followed by Ballari (99.6%), Raichur

(97.9%), Koppal (97.1%), Dharwad (91.3%) and Gadag (89%). Sixty six out of 69 taluks

suffered moderate and severe soil moisture stress conditions (Fig-2 and Table-3).

State-wide assessment of Crop Area

State-wide map showing area under crops and other land use types as on 18th April 2016 is

shown in fig-3 and statistics is given in table-4. About 10.3% of the state is under various

crops as on 18th April 2016, a decrease of 3.4% as compared to 30

th March 2016.

District-wise Assessment of crop area in Southern Karnataka

District-wise crop area estimates for Southern districts of Karnataka are shown in fig-4 and

statistics in table-5. It is observed that the crop area in southern districts has come down from

12.8% to 9.8% in the period from 30th March to 18

thApril 2016, a decrease of 3% area.

Conclusions

In the districts of Northern Karnataka the area under moderate and severe soil

moisture stress as on 18th

April 2016 was 95% compared to 82% as on 30th March

2016.

Out of 69 taluks in Northern districts of Karnataka, 66 were affected by moderate and

severe soil moisture stress as on 18th

April 2016 compared to 63taluks as on 30th

March 2016.

Crop area in the districts of Southern Karnataka has come down from 12.8% to 9.8%

in the period from 30th

March to 18th

April2016.
