THE LAST MEETING- Charlotte defeated ECU 4-0 during their first season back in C-USA, picking up their second league win of the 2014 season. Then-sophomore Courtney Carroll wore the hero jersey, smacking her first career home run and collecting three RBI in the process. Lexi Betancourt lasted the whole seven innings, scattering just two walks and two hits as she struck out nine.
QUICK FACTS LEADING OFF- The 49ers will meet five squads for the first time in 2016, including nationally ranked opponents in UCF and Kentucky.
-The Niners were picked to finish seventh in the Preseason C-USA Poll, as voted by the league’s coaches. Charlotte was selected to finish ahead of 2015 regular season and tournament champs WKU.
-Charlotte is coming off a milestone season in 2015 as the squad broke the single-season record for homeruns, blasting 36. Its HR leader is gone, but sophomore Haley Pace returns after finishing second on the team with 7.
-Charlotte was one of five teams selected from C-USA to host a television broadcast this season. The 49ers Sunday matchup against UTSA, which is Charlotte’s first home conference series of the year, was picked up by Fox Sports Network and will air LIVE at noon (eastern) on March 20. In addition to the Charlotte-UTSA matchup, the Niners could potentially earn more screen time, as the first three rounds of the Conference USA Tournament in May.
THE SCOUTING REPORTEAST CAROLINA PIRATES 9 CONFERENCE TITLES, 4 NCAA REGIONAL APPEARANCES East Carolina comes to Charlotte with a 3-2 record, picking up wins against Virginia, Seattle, and UC Riverside during their 2016 debut in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Junior outfielder Ciara Ervin leads the Pirates offensive-ly with six hits and four runs, followed by sophomore Karlie Smith, who posts six hits and three runs. It’s possible ECU could send one of two pitchers into the circle- junior Lydia Ritchie (2.21 ERA, 4 APP, 3 GS, 12.2 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 10 BB, 17 K) or sophomore Ashley Cruise (2.69 ERA, 3 APP, 2 GS, 13 IP, 17 H, 6 R, 9 BB, 14 K). Also expected to threat is junior catch-er Alex Mycek, who earned American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll recognition after notching two home runs in six at bats with five RBI during the opening contests.
