What It Is

SoftLayer’s hosting services are certified reliable and secure, having received Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70 (SAS 70) Type II Certification.

Developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the SAS 70 guidelines audit a service organization’s control objectives, safeguards, and activities. The accompanying Type II report presents the results of extensive testing that determines how effectively the organization’s controls meet its control objectives. The review and report includes a full assessment of:

■ Oversight by executive management■ Operations and customer service■ Development and information technology organization■ Human resources policies and procedures■ Risk assessment monitoring

Such a review is important for service organizations that provide services that are critical to its customers’ operations—the SAS 70 Type II Certification provides third-party verification that, in turn, the organization’s customers can supply for audits of their own operations (the audit meets Sarbanes-Oxley requirements).

Lance Crosby, Chief Executive Officer

Prior to SoftLayer, Mr. Crosby spent five years with The Planet as Chief Operations Officer where he managed all operations includingsales, provisioning, product selection, managed services, application development, engineering, information security, business developmentand legal departments. Serving in prior executive management roles at Catalog.com and Dallas Internet, he brings extensive experiencein leadership and management skills coupled with extensive technical skills in software and hardware environments. Mr. Crosby holdsBachelor's degrees in Finance and Management, a Master of Science in Finance and Master of Business Administration from TarletonState University, a part of the Texas A&M University System. Mr. Crosby's legal education includes a Juris Doctor from Texas WesleyanSchool of Law. Mr. Crosby is a licensed attorney in the State of Texas and is an active member of the State Bar of Texas.

Sam Fleitman, Chief Operations Officer

Sam Fleitman joined SoftLayer in June 2005 as the Chief Operations Officer directly responsible for IT systems, customer service, anddata center operations. Mr. Fleitman was the former Vice President of Information Systems at The Planet for over three years. Prior toThe Planet, Mr. Fleitman held the CTO position with Catalog.com. His background includes work experience with Oracle and Texas A&MUniversity. As CTO of Catalog.com, Mr. Fleitman designed and built one of the first fully scalable ICANN-accredited virtual hosts, totalingover 30,000 virtual servers. He is an Oracle database administrator with extensive development skills in multiple languages includingCold Fusion, C, C++, Perl, PHP, Python, SQL, PL/SQL, Oracle, ASP, Java, and others. Mr. Fleitman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Sciences from Texas A&M University.

Nathan Day, Chief Technology Officer

As CTO, Nathan Day is responsible for design, creation, and implementation of the proprietary SoftLayer Infrastructure ManagementSystem (IMS). Prior to SoftLayer, Mr. Day served as Vice President of Development at The Planet where he oversaw the back-end management system. Prior to joining The Planet, Mr. Day held the position as Senior Application Developer at Catalog.com. His employment history includes positions with Texas Instruments, MCI WorldCom, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He brings extensive experience in product and software development. His skill set includes PHP, Cold Fusion, Perl, HTML, XML, C, C++, and Python. Mr. Day earned a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Mike Jones, Chief Financial Officer

Mike Jones joined SoftLayer in June 2005 as Chief Financial Officer with oversight over all financial and accounting-related matters. Mr. Jones was the Chief Financial Officer of The Planet from March 2000 until May 2005. His 20+ years of experience has included publicaccounting with Ernst and Young, public auditing, strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, fundraising, accounting system designand implementation, treasury management, and forecasting for a number of successful high-tech startups. Mr. Jones has a Bachelor ofBusiness Administration in Accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington and is a CPA.

George Karidis, Chief Strategy Officer

George Karidis joined Softlayer in January, 2008, and is responsible for the company’s strategic growth and marketing activities. Prior tojoining SoftLayer, Mr. Karidis spent seven years with Devonshire Investors, the private equity arm of Fidelity Investments. What It Is

CDNLayer is SoftLayer’s industry-leading content delivery network (CDN). It uses a system of servers running advanced software for organizing, storing, and streaming web site content to end-users. Rather than serving content directly from the host server to the end-user, CDNLayer moves the content source from the host server to a node that is geographically closer to the end-user. This minimizes the distance the data has to travel, avoiding network traffic jams, and decreasing latency. CDNLayer includes tools for improved management and control, helping with digital rights management, and content monetization. FTP/NAS Storage File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) provide fast, reliable, and cost-effective storage for maximum data retention.

iSCSI Storage iSCSI offers a low-cost alternative to traditional fiber-channel storage solutions, allowing access to enterprise-grade Storage Area Network (SAN) storage over Ethernet, and is easily provisioned, highly scalable (it can be expanded on demand withouthuman intervention), and outperforms internal disks.

Online Backup and Recovery Tool The StorageLayer online backup and recovery tool utilizes Seagate Technology’s EVault to provideautomated, enterprise-class, disk-to-disk backup of mission-critical data with no downtime. It features a simple, Windows-based or web-based graphical user interface to initiate all backups and restores, and to configure all backup and automation options. Administratorscan set backups to follow an hourly, daily, weekly, or custom schedule, and to target full systems, specific directories, or even individualfiles. Individual software agents are available that enable the tool to target more specific data in Exchange, SQLServer, Sharepoint,MSClusters, and Oracle servers.

Snapshots and Replication Point-in-time snapshots of iSCSI volumes can be scheduled, stored locally or remotely, and later accessed to recover lost data or to compare with current data. Data on iSCSI volumes can also be automatically replicated to multiple data centers, providing the data security of geographic diversity.

SoftLayer Awarded for Environmental Accomplishment Company Recycles More than Six Tons of Foam in 2008 DALLAS—March 16, 2009—Metro Foam Recycling has awarded SoftLayer Technologies a certificate for having recycled more than 12,000 pounds of foam material in 2008. SoftLayer Provides IPv6 Support Implements Latest Protocol, Improving Routing and Network Configurations DALLAS—January 21, 2009—SoftLayer Technologies, the on-demand virtual data center services provider, has implemented native IPv6 support across all its data centers in Dallas, Seattle, and Washington, DC. IPv6 is the next-generation Internet protocol that provides substantially more addresses than the current IPv4 implementation. IPv6 will eventually replace the currently used IPv4 standard, with both coexisting over a multi-year transition period. SoftLayer has completely integrated IPv6 address ordering and management into the Customer Portal and API.

This allows greater flexibility in allocating addresses and routing traffic, and eliminates the need for network address translation, allowing for improved routing and network configurations.
