Tulane Univers i tyThe empir ical s tudy of religion has made progress in the past decade;nevertheless , there are reasons w hy this progress was not greater an d wh ythe prognosis for the next decade is not as optim as the assessm ent ofpas t accompl ishments . A review o f empir ica l s tudies over the pas t tenyears asses ses w ha t they have a ccom plished in investigating: ( l ) thestructure or dimensionality of religion, (2) religious belie[s, (3) religiousbehavior , (4) the nature and dyn am ics of religious belie[s , an d (5) re-l igious ins t as comp Iex organizations . Ho wev er , in spite of ad-vancing understanding of these aspects of religion, sociologis ts who havedevoted themselves to empir ica l s tudy have frequenthr been impededby resistance [rom religionists, suspicion from their fellow sociologists, and l i t tIe support [rom [unding agencies . The att i tudes of these three im-por tant re ference groups toward empir ica l s tudy o f re l are examined, and the possibil i t ies of their coming to regard s tudy of religion more [a-vorably are assessed. Finally, i t is sugges ted th at a shi[ t of em phasis fromthe s tudy of religion to the broader s tudy of values wouId bring sociol-ogis ts closer to the cr i t ical problems of a society and world in t ,rmoil .
