From the time I chose my thesistopic—Chinese TV dating shows—professors wereextremely supportive and helped me frame my topicand guide my writing style. I was also extremely lucky to have financial support from the departmentfor my research trip to Beijing, where I conducted interviews and observed show auditions.”

this program in sociology and social anthro-pology emphasizes interdisciplinary and criticalapproaches to social issues. the integrated study of two disciplines fosters an environmentthat is conscious of the historicity of social science categories and theories, their meaningin different cultures, and engagement in the practical world.

MASTER OF ARTS IN SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY (One Year)

this program aims to broaden students’ knowledge of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of social structures and processes in a historical-comparative framework. Coursework includes social theory, migration, religion, ethnicity, cultural poli-cies, social movements, globalization, modernity, urban development, and state research.

MASTER OF ARTS IN SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY (TwO Years)

this is an innovative and interdisciplinary program that focuses on the relationship between global processes and cities, particularly on how political, economic, and socialstructures interact on the urban, local, and global scale. Students may specialize in urban and global studies.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY

the doctoral program encourages theoretically driven empirical research in a non-parochial perspective that embraces broad perspectives on a variety of topics that are related to the department’s expertise. a year of rigorous coursework is generally followed by a year of research and an extended period of writing.
