Dramaturgy Definition

•According to Erving Goffman (1922-1982), the social life should be analyzed as a drama or stage.

•Birth ushers us onto the stage of everyday life

•Our Socialization consist of learning to perform on that stage

Neil suicide

• Who was Neil and & why he committed suicide.

• I think Neil character was static, meaning that he never changed. Just by considering his suicide, doesn’t mean he changed at the end

• Neil life was an act-to his father, to his teacher Keating and even to himself

• . Neil took different role just to fit the circumstances

• He never was upfront and honest about his passions to anyone.

LOOKING-GLASS SELF THEORY

The looking-glass self is a social psychological concept, stating that a person's self grows out of society's

Introduction

• The idea of functionalism was presented by AugusteComte

• French philosopher

• Functionalism interprets each part of society in terms of how it contributes to the stability of the whole society.

• The different parts are primarily the institutions of society, each of which is organized to fill different needs

Page 38: Sociological Perspective of the movie "Dead Poets Society". presentaion

Neil Perry Suicide

• Now I will explain Neil suicide through functionalist theory

• Neil was a talented student who was performing his duty of being a obedient son

• On the other hand he was an obedient student

• Neil wanted to be an actor but his father wanted him to be a doctor, at this point his functions overlapped

• At the end he realized that he was un able to to carry on with his role, and realized that he has failed.

• When such a situation occurs , a person feels powerless and may commit suicide

Page 41: Sociological Perspective of the movie "Dead Poets Society". presentaion

REINFORCEMENT THEORY

• Neil suicide can also be explained using REINFORCEMENT THEORY

• He was constantly forced against his will to become a doctor

• Neil perry couldn’t dare to stand up to his father

• Neil consider himself valueless and miserable who cannot follow his will.

• He commits suicide because he was forced to play a role that he cannot fit in.

Conformity:

•Neil is a conformist throughout his life.

•Never dare to dispute his father.

•Todd Anderson is too shy and hides in shell.

•Too much expectations have chained him.

Page 44: Sociological Perspective of the movie "Dead Poets Society". presentaion

Deviance to take control of life.

•Neil Perry clicks his passion; participate in play.

•Todd Anderson breaks the shell ; is discovered to be a great poet.

•Knox proposes his love! Wins her heart!

Page 45: Sociological Perspective of the movie "Dead Poets Society". presentaion

Recommendation

• Mr. Perry should have been flexible on his son.

• Mr. John Keating should have thought them to take control of their lives in controlled manner.

• Neil Perry should have given a fight rather than surrendering.
