Presidents MessageDear SDMS Members, I am pleased to present the 2019 SDMS Annual Report. In the following pages, you can learn about the SDMS’ 2019 activities and plans for 2020.
The SDMS takes immense pride in providing excellent service to our members and we are dedicated to providing the resources needed to excel as a sonographer. To ensure that as a society we are fulfilling our mission to promote, advance, and educate our members and the medical community in the science of diagnostic medical sonography,
the SDMS Board of Directors met in the Spring of 2019 to examine our goals and update our Strategic Plan. The outcome was a forward-thinking strategy designed to propel the SDMS and our members to continued success.
Other highlights of the SDMS’ 2019 accomplishments include:
• Joined a pioneering alliance dedicated to addressing the grand challenge of stopping work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) resulting from the performance of diagnostic medical ultrasound.
• Debuted the SDMS Virtual Conferences enabling sonographers to learn, earn SDMS CME credits, and network without the expense and hassle of travel.
• Awarded 431,475 SDMS CME credits. • Served 25,683 members in 50 countries around the world.
In 2020, the SDMS is celebrating 50 years of advancing sonography and I am excited about what the future holds for our profession and the SDMS. The SDMS’ success is directly attributable to the dedication and efforts of the SDMS Board of Directors, our volunteers, members, and staff. Thank you for everything that you do every day helping patients and for the opportunity to serve as your President.
Sincerely,
Ted Whitten, BA, RDMS, RVT, FSDMSSDMS and SDMS Foundation President

IN 2019, the SDMS joined a pioneering alliance of sonography organizations dedicated to stopping work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) resulting from the performance of diagnostic medical ultrasound.
ALLIANCE MEMBERS• American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM)• American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and Inteleos• American Society of Echocardiography (ASE)• Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC)• Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS)• Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU)• Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS)
After meeting virtually throughout the year, the Alliance came together in September 2019 for a Design Summit that gave participants the opportunity to evaluate and improve the impact, metrics, coordination, funding, and communication necessary to address the WRMSD problem. The Alliance continues to work on finding innovative ways to address WRMSD in sonography and another Design Summit is scheduled for June 2020.
