THE THEORY
The Organizational Assimilation Theory attempts to explain how newcomers use communication to fit in or adjust to a new place/organization
An individual's socialization into an organization determines his/her success within the organization
THE THEORIST
Fred Jablin (1982).
Jablin describes three different stages that occuras one enters an organization
Anticipatory Socialization the Encounter Stage Metamorphosis
ANTICIPATORY SOCIALIZATION
Occurs when we star
t learning new
routine
s involved with an organization as well as values that
may
be needed
Making
necessary adjustments in
advance
makes the actual transition into the new
role easier
By adopting some of the
norms and values of a future role, we can evaluate whether that role will be right for
us
ENCOUNTER STAGE The “breaking in” period
At the end of this stage the newcomer should have a strong understanding of the organization and the role he/she has in it
METAMOPHOSIS This is an extremely significant stage
because it shows acceptance The new person becomes an accepted
member because she/he has learned the specific behaviors and attitudes associated with that particular organization
ANALYTIC CONSISTENCY
Theory has been well tested and proves
relevant even 20 years
Organizational assimilation places emphasis on
organizational socialization by explaining the values and
feeling that humans place on work positions
Superior Idea
METHODOLOGICAL RIGOR
commitment to a specific process which will produce an outcome that is factual and complete
Well tested
Well defined
