After the war, Vietnamese lived in shanty towns, where prostitution, poverty, and drug abuse were common.

They traveled by sea and became known as “boat people”, who many were murdered or drowned by pirates.

Social (American Side)

American soldiers received a cold greeting when they returned from war

American soldiers had trouble adjusting to civilian life

When American soldiers

returned, many had post-traumatic stress.

Americans became suspicious of sending troops to wars they thought they couldn’t win easily.

Some American troops that handled chemicals (like Agent Orange) contracted Cancer.

30% of American soldiers used drugs because they were easily available and cheap.

Health (Vietnamese Side)

Vietnamese had high levels of dioxin (which was used in Agent Orange) The levels were three times as high as Americans’

Unexploded MinesBombing caused numerous deaths and injuries.

Environmental

Destroyed 5.4 million acres of forest areas and animals and plants living there.
