  • What can a map show? Maps can show different things. Some show neighborhoods, cities, land, and water. Most maps have titles. A title tells you what the map shows.

  • The United States is a country. (our country) A country is a land and the people who live there. This is a United States map.

  • SSome maps show states. AA state is part of a country. TThe United States is made up of 50 states. What is the name of our state? Can you find it on the map?

  • How is a globe like Earth? Earth is round like a ball. Earth is made up of land and water. A globe is a model of Earth. A model is a small copy of something.

  • These are all globes. How are they like Earth? They are both round. They both show water. They both show land. Water is blue on a globe and on Earth.

  • What is the equator? The equator is an imaginary line around the middle of the Earth. The weather is very hot at and near the equator.

  • What are the poles? The poles of the Earth are located at the top and bottom of Earth. The North Pole is at the top of Earth. The South Pole is at the bottom of Earth. The weather is very cold at and near the poles. North Pole South Pole

  • What are directions? There are four main directions. They are the cardinal directions. The cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west. A compass shows directions on a map. (Points to the North Pole.) (Points to the South Pole.)
