How to Pack a Fun & Healthy Lunch for Your

Child

Most children want nothing but cookies and pudding in their

lunch. Are you going to be a parent that will give in to their

child’s unrealistic requests? Or, are you going to be a

parent that knows how to pack a healthy, appetizing lunch

for their child that’s also fun too! By following these simple

steps and helpful hints, your child will be the coolest kid at

the lunch table.

Make a list of your child’s top favorite foods. Keep that list

handy so you can more easily put fun lunches together.

Incorporate old favorites with new items! By adding new

foods to your child’s lunch alongside some of their

favorites, you can create a new (to them!) yummy lunch.

Continue:Be creative. If you make the food look fun and taste good, the kids will eat it! Instead of a regular old peanut butter sandwich on white bread, use a whole-wheat tortilla, peanut butter, some banana rounds, and a drizzle of honey. This way the food looks like more fun, it will taste better AND it won’t be so messy! Or make smiley faces or hearts out of fruits and veggies! The possibilities are endless.

Use cupcake wrappers. but not for cupcakes! You can use a regular plastic tupperware but can separate all different veggies to add to the side of the child’s sandwich by using fun colored cupcake wrappers.

Avoid processed foods. Stay away from lunchmeat and chips. Rather, use freshly grilled chicken, ground beef, or roasted turkey. Substitute processed potato chips with a healthier option such as baked sweet potato chips.

How to Get Kids to Become

More Active

When kids are active, their bodies can do the

things they want and need them to do. Regular

exercise provides these benefits. Strong

muscles and bones, weight control, decreased

risk of developing type 2 diabetes, better sleep,

and a better outlook on life. Healthy, physically

active kids also are more likely to be

academically motivated, alert, and successful. !

1 Encourage outdoor games. Classic games like

Tag, Follow the Leader, the Hokey Pokey, and

Hide and Seek will keep kids on the go. Most

young children are active learners, so games like

Hopscotch and Four Square will help them learn

their numbers while also keeping them physically

fit.

2 Explore the world around you. Dig in the dirt.

Chase after shadows. Throw sticks in a puddle.

Plant a garden. You can make anything into your

playground.

3 Make TV time active time. Kids don’t need to

slump on the couch as they watch favorite

programs. Encourage them to sing and dance

along as they watch characters like Barney and

other shows.

4 Limit TV tim. When a show or movie is

over, turn the TV off and suggest other

activities to promote active learning.

5 Provide healthy snacks. Active kids need

the right foods for their growing bodies.

You’ll find many kid friendly recipes for

nutritious snacks.

6 Do chores together. Dust, sweep, wipe off

the table, and give dolls and trucks a bath.

Not only will you stay active, you’ll make

your child feel like a grown-up, and

responsible member of the family.

7 Set a good example. When you exercise

regularly and eat healthy foods, you set an

example that will shape your child’s habits

for life.
