Session Overview

•Discuss barriers and challenges that influence leadership and student success for student-athletes.

•Propose strategies student-athletes can employ to overcome challenges and enable them to demonstrate leadership and success.

Community College Equity Assessment Lab (CCEAL)

Our Lab

The Community College Equity Assessment Laboratory (CCEAL) is a national research and practice lab that partners with community colleges to support their capacity in advancing outcomes for students who have been historically underserved in education, particularly students of color. CCEAL houses the Minority Male Community College Collaborative (M2C3).

CCEAL was developed to advance three objectives:

• Research - to conduct and disseminateempirical research on the experiences ofhistorically underserved students in communitycolleges;

• Training - to provide training that improvespractices and research relevant to students ofcolor in community colleges; and

• Assessment - to use assessment and evaluationto facilitate capacity-building within communitycolleges.

Dispelling Myth vs Reality about Student-Athletes

Myth

• Student-athletes are not “real” students.

• Student-athletes are only care about sports—not academics.

• Student-athletes get more support than non-student athletes.

• It is not possible to balance sports and academics.

Reality

• Student-athletes outperform non-student-athletes on most indicators of student success.

• Community colleges typically do not have the resources to provide additional support to student-athletes.

• Academically successful student-athletes regularly report having to balance the demands of sport and school as a critical factor in their success.

• Reflect on the questions: “Who am I?” and “What are the ways I can contribute to society/my community?”

• Game plan for success. Create an ed plan and follow it religiously!

• Don’t just ball. Identify ways in which your athletic goals are aligned with your academic and career goals.

• Get to know your professors. Visit each of them during office hours at least one time each semester. Invite them to a game!

• Engage during class. Don’t just chill!

• Expand your network. Get to know students who are not student-athletes.

• Be proactive. Visit these key campus resources at least one time each semester.– Counselor– Career Center– Transfer Center

• Build your personal success team. Identify folks in and out of athletics who can guide, coach, advise, and support you in achieving your life goals.

• Challenge yourself. Don’t settle. Don’t go with the flow. Don’t do what everyone else is doing. Step outside your comfort zone.
