Examples of Misuse of Social Media

Student nurse expelled after posting a picture of herself with a placenta on FaceBook

Five Nurses fired for discussing patients on FaceBook.

Nurses in Wisconsin took photos of a patient’s x ray. One allegedly posted on FaceBook. Both Nurses were fired.

Nurses have been fired for inappropriate use of the internet while on duty.

A teacher in Florida was fired last week for something posted on fb.

Avoid making comments that reflect poorly on CSUS

Remember that your FB page could be viewed by prospective employers

Avoid commenting on clinical situations like staffing, equipment, or even circumstances surrounding patient care.

Avoid discussing co workers, peers, or faculty

Nothing on the Web is private! Consent is needed to post pictures of

people…even your friends You may not take or post pictures of

patients under any circumstances

What about cell phones in the clinical setting?

Many have data bases on them Great resources for looking up

medications and procedures Do they interfere with the telemetry

equipment? What about airplane mode?

Use of Mobile Devices

iPhones, iPads, iPods and similar devices May use medical and nursing apps Airplane mode in the hospital NO PICTURES OF ANYTHING No texting while in the clinical area Do not place or receive phone calls in

the clinical areas

experiences Building an alumni Preparing student nurses for the future▪ Connecting with other members of healthcare

Remember that posts can be forwarded and used by others

Want to set up a class FB page? You need to get approval

Strongly recommended that you not friend patients (past or present)

Decide if your FB page is personal or professional?

Stick to your designation Set up two FB pages if necessary or

use LinkedIn for your professional page

A student takes a picture of the answer key to a case study and sends it to all the students?
