Basic Learning Goals – Target Groups
Purely illiterate people
are unable to read and write in any language. They need to understand the relationship between graphic symbols such as letters and the written word.
People unable do understand the Latin alphabet
have learnt to read using non-Latin scripts. They need to convert their reading ability to make it available in the Latin alphabet.
Functionally illiterate people
can read and possobly write simple sentences in their mother tongue but with a limited vocabulary, and cannot read or write well enough to deal with the everyday requirements of life in a highly-developed industrial society.
First Steps in German
Participants have minimal formal education and have no or only little knowledge of German
The courses are tailord to the development of participants with special learning needs. They learn rudimentary grammar, organizational and memorisation techniques and the like.

Basic Education Course for illiterate
adult learners
Purely illiterate people
The participants learn:
• the Latin alphabet• assign the phonetic values
to letters• to develop the sence of
touch, orientation in space and the use of every day subjects such as scissors, files or glue
• how to use German
Lesson Frequency2 x 2 units per week, courses begin 3 times a year in January, April and September
Course for reading and writing
People unable to understand the Latin alphabet
The participants learn how to:
• build up words and construct simple sentences
• understand the meaning of words and sentences
• assign the phonetic values to letters and words
• to write diphthongs, vowel mutations (the umlauts ä,ö,ü) and consonantclusters
• recognise compound words
• use a textbook• begin using German
