How does my magazine represent particular social groups?

Page 2: Social groups

My target audience is metal fans around 16-26 years old. I have represented this particular social group through my colour scheme as it conforms to the stereotypical colours of black, red and non-vibrant colours, which gives connotations of seriousness and intimidation. Using these colours adds these connotations to my magazine and helps re-enforce who it is aimed at.

As you can see here, though the colour red is vibrant, it’s contrasted and overshadowed by the stronger presence of black.

My images, as I have previously stated, do not conform with the kind of images found in metal magazine. This shows I am representing my target audience as people who don’t just conform to what they see and are more free-willed.Generally, this social group would we thought to look like this:

Whereas in my images I’ve used a much more normal looking model to represent this social group:

My use of informal mode of address contrasts the more mature colour scheme as this is a much more relaxed and friendly-sounding way of communication. It denotes that this magazine is not really aimed at mature audiences. This fits well since my target audience are teenagers to young adults.

The language used is not overly complicated as this is not important for my target audience. This may represent them as less educated or sophisticated, which is stereotypically what is thought.

Using this, I am representing metal fans as people who like fun and aren’t really interested in acting serious.
