History
• The concept of social bookmarking dates back to April 1996 when tList.com was launched.
• In 2003 Del.icio.us coined the term, “social bookmarking”.
• The new era begins in 2005-2006.– The first wave: del.icio.us, Furl and Simpy– The second wave Diigo, Netvouz, Ma.gnolia
and Stumble Upon.
Tools• Social bookmarking started with only
the ability to save websites online.
• Newer services began to offer folders to sort bookmarks.
• The newest generation of this service offer the ability to rate websites, tag them for easy searching and even random searches for areas of interests.
A tag is a keyword or term associated with or assigned to a piece of information
Tools
How to Get Started with• Join and discover 5,227,378 people's favorite sites• Discover websites based on your interests• Meet people that have similar interests
• The bookmarks can be accessed anywhere with in internet connection.
• Easy sorting of personal bookmarks through the tagging of items.
• Great way to find and share new sites with friends and the general public.
• Tag based labeling of websites is superior to search engine’s traditional method of crawling since it relies upon people actually understanding the content on a site.
Disadvantages of Social Bookmarking
• No consistent oversight to how a resource is tagged - e.g. tag London could stand for City of London, or Jack London.
• The vocabulary problem that exists with tagging is rather severe and can cause all manner of problems.
• Tools are still evolving and not all have polished, user-friendly interfaces.
–Track all the interesting sites you find–Network with other people having
same interest around the world.–Organize web references for research–Contact other people for professional
networking based on their social book mark.
