Laireiter and Baumann (1992):– Integration with family life, community, and access to support

systems

– Network of social resources

– Climate of the social relations

– Reciprocity of social relations

– Perception of support

SS and intentions are related (medium effect)

Not the same as subjective norm or cohesion (small to medium relationships)

Highly related to self-efficacy and attitudes

Rhodes (2001) review of all SS and PA studies - 48/49 identified the importance of SS as a Correlate

Kahn et al. (2002) showed limited utility used as a sole intervention

Premise that entire communities can be targeted for behaviour change

Often include a number of delivery agents (institution, organization, group)
